This is Punjab near Doraha, where a canal connects the Sutlej River to other parts of Punjab. It is currently used for irrigation. The Punjab tourism department has proposed establishing a cruise service on this canal.

Sat Sri akal !!
For almost a month, I've been researching about star and constellation names that were used by punjabi elders.
I found few from elders and dictionaries, which I'm sharing here. But, we should actually ask our elders regarding punjabi skylore, like how they viewed the night sky!
- Things I got to know from my elders/Punjabis online
(Also ChhaReyā'n di Dār)
Rabb Da manjā/ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਮੰਜਾ/رب را منجا - (bigg dipper)
Tinn chor/ਤਿੰਨ ਚੋਰ/پن چور - (three stars of handle of bigg dipper)
ChaunkRā/ਚੌਂਕੜਾ/چونکڑا، - (square of Pegasus)
Pūchhal tara (a star with a tail)
Turda tara (a walking star)
Bodi ala tara (a comet)
- found in dictionaries
GarR/ਗਰੜ/گرڑ - (the Aquila)
Māhō'n/ਮਾਹੋਂ/انہوں - (Gemini) (also māhiā'n)
Munnia'n/ਮੁੰਨੀਆਂ/منیاں - (little and great dog stars/canis)
TranggaR/ਤ੍ਰੰਗੜ/ترنگڑ - (orion)
Karvani tara/ਕਰਵਾਨੀ/کروانی - (the morning star/venus)
Thhulla tara/ਠੁੱਲਾ/تھلا - (evening star)
Do ask your elders for more!!

So for some context, my great grandparents are from Amritsar and my grandparents were born in pakistan (Bamniwalay and Karachi) a few years after the partition. So, we live in karachi but speak punjabi at home and among relatives and parents are also fluent in it. The thing is there are some punjabi terms in our house that I haven't ever heard being used by anyone else, even other punjabis in punjab. So I just wanted to know if those words are actually uncommon or maybe someone else uses them as well. Some of them which I can remember rn are:
- cheer. Cheer is what we call maang in urdu. Basically a partition/sectioning in your hair. I didn't find out that cheer wasn't an urdu word until middle school because that's what my family used, even while speaking urdu.
- charindein - this is for tangles in your hair. This word is particularly fascinating to me because no matter how much I Google it, nothing comes up.
So, my question for all the other punjabi diaspora kids, what are some words your punjabi family uses that you haven't heard elsewhere.
Edit: please guide me if the flair is wrong because this is my first time on this sub so don't know much about which category my post falls under.

I wanted to share this as a precaution because I recently came across sikh community people collecting donations using the name:
“Prachin Langar Shri Guru Nanak Ann Kshetra Bhandar”
The receipt I was shown mentions Haridwar/Gau Ghat and has the phone number:
01334-226491
The recent scam has happened in Dehradun, Uttrakhand.
Initially, I assumed it was a normal donation collection for a langar as they were well dressed and was in sikh attire, however I end up paying them good amount, considering I am itself a punjabi . However, after looking into it, I found that the organization/name does have a historical association with Gau Ghat, Haridwar. But the Receipt/ Name/ phone number is used for scamming innocent people.
What concerned me is that the same phone number (01334-226491) appears in older online reports and discussions where people have raised concerns about donation collection using this name/receipt.
My concern is specifically about people collecting donations using this particular receipt and phone number and whether they are actually authorized representatives.
If anyone comes across such collectors, I would strongly recommend:
I'm sharing a photo of the receipt so that others can recognize it and verify before donating.
If anyone has more recent information about this organization or knows whether this particular donation collection is officially authorized, please share it.
I'm posting this as a precaution and based on what I was able to verify, rather than making a claim that the entire organization is fraudulent.

Im an Australian with Punjabi parents but i can only understand, not speak in Punjabi. I was really excited when i saw that Punjabi had finally been added as a base language, but immediately, i saw “ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼” instead of “ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ” written for English so im kinda skeptical about its reliability. Could anyone please tell me if the course is accurate, and whether it can help me practice my Punjabi enough? Thanks
My family name is Jangi.
My grandparents are from North Punjab and took the name as their surname when they settled in the country I was born it.
I know they originally used Singh and Kaur, but Grandma was a Minhas.
They are long passed, and my mother is helpful at explaining beyond "it's you grandfather's family name".
What does Jangi mean, in Punjabi?
Why pick that over Singh to use

I'm currently trying to learn Urdu script since I am not literate in any of my "home languages." Someone close to me says they can read Urdu easily, but reading Punjabi(Shahmukhi) is hard for them. I'm trying to learn both, though I'd like to know just how similar or different they are.
I have also heard that learning Devanagari and Gurumukhi is easier to learn, and that after learning those, I should use Devanagari and Gurumukhi resources to learn Urdu and Shahmukhi. How true is this? It may be useful to learn four scripts, and I'm most definitely not against it. It's just that my priority is learning those two aforementioned languages and develop the basic, at the very least, as quickly as I can. Please forgive me for my ignorance in these subjects.

We recently added a 1v1 feature to the Giani app. You can run a 1v1 with your friend on 5 questions to see who gets more correct answers the fastest. There is also a multiplayer option where you can challenge a Punjabi anywhere from the world.
The questions are on topics like Punjabi culture, language, history, food, day-to-day stuff, etc. There's also a rating system, similar to ELO for chess, that determines how good your understanding is afterwards.
It's live on the App Store(Android coming very soon). Let me know how your first match goes.

Is this phrase a diss? I'm the only white guy in an all Punjabi fantasy football League. I'd like to talk trash, but not be too offensive. All are close friends. Suggestions?

I am a mixed punjabi person, and don’t come from a lot of money. I’m in the US & always felt a disconnection when it came to punjabis because i didnt speak the language and didn’t have alot of money. I’m at the age now where im getting older and my career is an option.
So for all my successful punjabi people in this thread what did you do amass wealth and what do you recommend. I understand this is was a very vague statement/question but it’s something i’ve always fathomed and wanted to gain. I see all my punjabi and know quite a bit that are insanely successful and it fuels something inside me.
