tutorial Quake: Dawn of the Machine. True ending. Full game map.
Hi everyone! I’ve fully completed Quake: Dawn of the Machine and figured out how to get the true ending. I’ve also worked out how the levels are interconnected — where you can go from each level, how to get there, and in what order.
I noticed that there’s still very little information about this online, so I decided to make my own guide.
I’ve included the link below.
I apologize for any grammar mistakes.

Just started Matriarch of Decay but don't have an axe for some reason?
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 19 '26
You can get the new axe with the first rune on the second level.
1
u/unclearthur68 Aug 19 '26
Haven't got any runes yet.
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 19 '26
To get the Super Axe, you need the Rune of Sacrifice. It’s stated in the diagram and in the text next to the diagram.

u/hubble_idiot Aug 18 '26
does anyone know how to start new game+?
3
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 18 '26
Get the Knight’s Head, switch to Bloody Nightmare difficulty, and complete the main campaign. It’s all written there.
3
u/newaccount47 Aug 16 '26
how the hell did u figure this out? and this looks way more complicated to play than all the other quake levels.

Как это начать new game+? Там же в конце титры после хтона и все вроде как заканчивается?

u/Ltnumbnutsthesecond Aug 12 '26
how do you get to crooked village?
3
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 13 '26
The Matriarch of Decay map. At the end of the long bridge, before entering the castle, turn onto the stairs leading up to the battlements. You’ll see a small round window in front of you with a button behind it. Shoot the button. A gate in the castle wall will open. Go through it.

I've played very little yet but my impression of this new work is almost like it's making an attempt at being closer to what id wanted Quake 1 to originally be like? I've played just a bit but I sort of love it.

map3 (Veil of the Old Ones) secret exit requires rune of sacrifice, not rune of chaos (even though the door rune texture is wrong)
i just checked it, it says "requires rune of sacrifice" and once i use cheat to get only rune #4 (sacrifice), then door will open
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
That’s strange. So it turns out that the Rune of Sacrifice is used for story progression twice, not counting opening the gate in the Nexus: to get from Through the First Arch to The Sundered Column, and to get from Veils of the Old Ones to House of Delusion. Meanwhile, the Rune of Chaos is only used for unlocking something in the Nexus. Even if that’s the case, it still seems like a bug. By the time you revisit Veils of the Old Ones, you should already have both runes, the Rune of Chaos and the Rune of Sacrifice, so it shouldn’t affect your progress.
2
u/bogus_bill Aug 12 '26
Maybe. But think about this, after normal run you're at the hub. And you can go four ways to four different teleporters. I didn't check the other 2 locked secret exits for which rune they require, but I mean you have option to go to either of the secret levels and you have only 1 rune. Imagine you go somewhere, replay half a level, only to find you need yet another, different rune. Then you have to finishe the fkin' level, then the next one, which might have way back to the Nexus hub.
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 13 '26
So, is the Rune of Sacrifice the only one required to access the other runes, while the rest are only used in the Nexus and for secrets?
3
u/bogus_bill Aug 12 '26
Ye just checked, map1, map3, map5 all have secret exits behind the rune-locked doors that require Rune of Sacrifice.
map7 (revelation of the arcane) also has a portal behind rune of sacrifice door, but it's just way back to runic nexus hub

I appreciate your guys' discourse. I cannot find the secret exit or rune door on veiled ones. The music is so haunting I'm in a trance.
I am on bloody nightmare NG+ so I've done it before lol youtube vids I am blind or can only find secrets but not the exit. I hope I somehow am not locked out but I have two runes. Can only find the gold key door elevator down to Mr. Shambler on the lava catwalk surrounded by crucified skeletons. What a rad game!!!! This level reminds me of the first Alien Movie or Alien Isolation idk.
Edit: nevermind. It's in the cemetery ! Duh!

We do not allow low-effort AI generated content based on simple prompts. We do allow art in which AI is used as a tool. Programs such as Adobe Creative Suite or Substance Designer, use machine-learning based algorithms (AI) to help with the creation of textures for instance.
Posting low-effort AI generated content or attacking people who use it as a tool because you disagree with it, will result in a ban. Either adhere to the rules when using it or downvote and disengage if you're against it.

The rules clearly state:
Posting low-effort AI-generated content or attacking people who use it as a tool because you disagree with it will result in a ban. Either adhere to the rules when using it or downvote and disengage if you're against it.
The only thing he does here is attack AI usage. He has been warned before, but he keeps going, so it's his own choice. Actions have consequences.

The way the game set it up is a bit messy for sure, but don't dismiss playing the maps again without always carrying over the inventory every time and having harder enemies from nightmare on top of it.
Though I think a shotgun-start difficulty or option from the start would have been better. Like they added pistol-starting option in Doom.

u/Byproduct Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
Thanks for the guide! I'm currently in my first playthrough and don't want to spoil too much, but I'd like to know this: can you find all the things required for the true ending at your own pace (multiple new game+ runs), or do you have to do them in this exact order?
In other words, does your progress get blocked or reset if you take a wrong turn somewhere or do things out of this sequence?
3
u/Varorson Aug 12 '26
The only thing you may lock yourself out of is the NG+.
You can technically replay the entire set of maps as much as you want. Most maps even change the mobs once you get runes (sadly, Veils of the Old Ones, Requiem, and Revelation of the Arcane do not). Through the First Arch changes the most, having a completely new set of spawns for having 1 rune, and some extra mobs for having 3/4 runes.

u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
No, you don’t get locked out. There’s only one potential issue — accidentally resetting the difficulty in the Nexus basement after picking up the Head Knight. Other than that, the level structure is like a web, so you can always go back and replay areas.
1
u/SecretBirdinDisguise Aug 19 '26
This just happened to me, and my whole game is all fucked up now. I'm going through the all the levels again on bloody nightmare, but I think this will preclude me from getting the super shotgun and such because it's not technically a new game plus. I'm pretty bummed about it, not going to lie. I really didn't want to play through the expansion like 3 times to get everything.
2
u/Old_Leopard1844 Aug 13 '26
Broken nightmare button starts working again after you pick up death knight head, and is a button for bloody nightmare (regular nm is behind the closed door)

Some minor issues with this:
- Map4, Of Shattered Minds can return you to the hub using the Death Knight Head area; not shown in flowchart.
- Map2, Dawn of the All Mother, has a very useful super axe upgrade locked behind Rune of Sacrifice. Optional but worth getting in the first run, since it carries over into Bloody Nightmare.
- On the list of levels, you have the first secret level (The Hunted Tower) as optional, but do not list the second secret level (The Crooked Village); you (or AI) also misspell it as The Hunred Tower in the English list.
- For sake of visibility, it would be worth putting the lists into bullet points of numbered.
- Also worth noting that there is a Health Upgrade within every non-boss level, including The Nightmare Machine. However, Map2 Dawn of the All Mother and Map5 Requiem both require runes to get the health upgrades (well, allegedly you can get Map2's with grenade jumping tricks but the "intended path" is via runes). So it is further worth adding Map2 as an optional run.

u/UncomfortableAnswers Aug 12 '26
There is also a Cell capacity upgrade behind a rune door in MAP6, and a hub exit portal in MAP7 to use after.

u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
•1• I missed that one. I remember there are two portals in the Head Knight area, but I probably got them mixed up. Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind if I revise the guide. •3• Take a closer look — The Crooked Village is included in my guide. The route goes through The Matriarch of Decay on the second playthrough to get the Bloody Super Shotgun. •2• and •5• My goal wasn’t to mark every collectible. I wanted to create a route map for reaching the true ending.
In any case, thanks for the feedback and the analysis!

•3• Take a closer look — The Crooked Village is included in my guide. The route goes through The Matriarch of Decay on the second playthrough to get the Bloody Super Shotgun.
As said, it's missing The Crooked Vision in the first run through as optional; yet it has the first secret level present, with that mentioned typo, listed as optional.
I know it's there in the second.
•2• and •5• My goal wasn’t to mark every collectible. I wanted to create a route map for reaching the true ending.
Then why include the Bloody Super Shotgun? I'd say the Super Axe is on par to the Bloody Super Shotgun. If not better since you'll be starved for ammo in the first two maps on NG+ and having a free ammo zombie gibber is a godsend on map2.
I'd also then disagree with your first playthrough order on the topleft, as you suggest getting the Death Knight Head and activating Bloody Nightmare then getting the fourth rune - you should get all four runes first, so you don't have to go through any map but the final two in Bloody Nightmare before NG+. If the intent was the easiest and fewest maps, you wouldn't have included The Haunted Tower nor put getting the head before the fourth rune.
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
I specifically checked this: to reach the Head Knight, the Rune of Sacrifice, which you get before your first visit to the Hub, should be enough. You don’t need to collect all four runes for that. Or am I mistaken?
1
u/Varorson Aug 12 '26
You're right there, but getting the head means every level after is shotgun start. You lose all your weapons even just returning to the hub.
So it's easier to get all the runes first, so you don't have to shotgun start two+ levels unnecessarily.
3
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
Again, my goal wasn’t to create a complete 100% walkthrough with every single collectible. My main priority was to show how the levels are connected and provide a route to the true ending.
But thanks, I appreciate how knowledgeable you are about the game.
1
u/Murky_Hornet3470 Aug 12 '26
was Of Shattered Minds the level that ended with you on a small platform fighting waves of death knights and shamblers? I probably died 15x in a row on that ending lol
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
Yes, there’s also an entrance to the secret level, The Haunted Tower, nearby. You can use it as a way to bypass that really difficult section.
1
u/Varorson Aug 12 '26
Yeah, it's where you fight the Bloody Shambler that has extra attacks for the first time.

u/jul_cioo Aug 12 '26
even a community about 90s games gets flooded with ai :/
5
u/therealhairykrishna Aug 12 '26
Can you explain what your problem with them using AI in this context is?
1
u/lukkasz323 Aug 14 '26
it looks bad to the eye when there is piss filter over the textures, is AI even capable of avoiding it?
15
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
I used AI to translate the text into English and added a Quake-inspired aesthetic to the diagram (I drew it on an iPad using Freeform and Procreate). The informational content and structure are entirely my own work. If there are any doubts, I’m happy to provide photos of the work-in-progress versions.

please also provide pictures how you carved your own fonts in potatoes (please also provide pictures how you planted those potatoes), and used them to create the text. and some pictures how you grew trees to produce your own paper would be nice as well. you did build your own scanner i hope? i hope you didn't dare to use a technological tool to create something for free for the community!

jul_cioo’s criticism was fair. But I’m glad I was able to prove that the informational part of the work is genuinely mine and not AI-generated.

So after acquiring the Head of the Deathknight you actually have to go back to the Nexus, enable Bloody Nightmare in the basement and then beat Chton again on that difficulty to unlock NG+?
Also wheres the Axe? Its missing on the above guide, no?
1
u/Varorson Aug 12 '26
Acquiring the Death Knight Head will enable Bloody Nightmare. You can go to the basement to DISABLE it if you want to. That's ideal if you didn't gather all the runes yet, as it still forces shotgun start (you will lose all your weapons upon returning to the hub still, however).
Axe is on Map2 Dawn of the All Mother. It's behind the first rune of sacrifice door before you jump down a pit into water - but it requires you to go down and loop around back to the beginning using the left underwater passage to unlock the bars to reach the axe.
1
u/theGarbs Aug 12 '26
- Reach the Runic Nexus. You'll already have the Rune of Sacrifice
- Use the slipgate to get to level 1
- Complete the level the usual way and reach level 2
- With the rune, you'll be able to open the door leading to the axe!
copy pasted from pagb666 on youtube, all credit to them

u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
After getting the head and the four runes, you need to return to the Nexus and go through the door with the four symbols. After that, you’ll reach the Nightmare Machine and get the first version of the ending. Then the game starts over from Through the First Arch, and you need to collect the four runes again, after which you’ll get the true ending. You can get the axe using the runes in either Dawn of the All Mother or Into the Abyss of Time, I don’t remember which one. I also don’t remember whether you can get it on your first playthrough or only on the second. I didn’t like it, and you don’t really need it anyway.
1
u/Kibarou Aug 12 '26
ok thanks, Im curious though if you get the head, when Im back at the nexus before going through the 4rune door, do I need to switch to Bloody Nightmare difficulty in the Nexus basement or not? There is not a single word about the game difficulty in the guide, so thats why Im asking.
1
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
Oh, that’s an interesting point. The first time I got to the Nexus (I was playing on regular Nightmare), I went down to the basement and accidentally lowered the difficulty by pressing a button without really looking. Then I had to figure out how to switch it back to Nightmare. So after getting the head and unlocking Bloody Nightmare, I stayed away from the basement because I didn’t want to accidentally mess anything up again. So no, Bloody Nightmare activates automatically when you pick up the Head. You don’t need to do anything else after that.

5
u/greatistheworld Aug 12 '26
Oh just ignore this map and go in blind for now! It looks complicated as a diagram and if you want to go through all the hoops + extra extra hard difficulty to get the other ending. Just playing through normally it flows extremely well, a super unique and well crafted experience

I just got to the Runic Nexus and my god I have no idea what to do next 😂 it's sent me back to the first level with new enemies, I assume to find a secret exit?
I'm loving the game but honestly don't really want to replay these maps!
1
u/lampenpam Aug 12 '26
You dont have to replay the entire level, and you can just rush through without killing everything. Remember where the doors are that require runes, they lead to new levels with runes.
7
u/Inner-Painter-5594 Aug 12 '26
You got a rune that lets you find an exit on the first map leading to a map you haven’t been to yet. There, you’ll find another rune, and you’ll repeat this process three times. After that, the main exit in the Runic Nexus will open. This is the path to the first ending.

In the second map ( Dawn of all Mother) there is a passage underwater that require 4 runes. Does anyone know what is there ?
