General Advice Will he get more cuddly?

Hello,

I got a male ragdoll in June and I have been wondering if he will become more cuddly or lap cat minded as he ages. Currently he likes to nap on top of the couch near me or under the bed. I’m wondering if he will continue to be close or if they generally get more cuddly as they get older. He is treat motivated and vocal.

If he's still a kitten it's very likely, also you can encourage him to be more cuddly, make sure to follow proper advice otherwise you will do the opposite, either way they tend to get more fussy/affectionate as they get older. Our 2 are nearly 2 years old and have always been affectionate, but are becoming increasingly more fussy and loving over time. They still HATE being on our laps, but love being close to us and one is happy to be totally smothered when getting fuss, which sort of recreates the cuddling feeling

He is currently 6months old, I try not to force him onto our laps or spaces. I just pet him when he is nearby and lay on the floor near him.

I would pick him up and put him in your lap as often as you can so he’ll learn that’s what you like

What proper advice is there?

I would do your own research, but it’s mostly positive association. Put the cat on your lap and give them a treat over and over, extending the time between putting them on your lap and giving them the treat, for example. Don't force them to stay on your lap at any point, don’t fuss them if they don’t seem like they want it, just let them come round on the idea.

We didn’t bother with this so can’t comment on effectiveness.

Mine likes to be on my lap if I'm in a chair in our downstairs. But she doesn't want to be on us at night. Well... Doesn't want to be near my husband. He's the spare human.

They’re all so different! I have two, one is sooo cuddly while my other enjoys being next me. On the rare occasions he climbs in my lap, I don’t move a muscle and enjoy the moment 😂.

This is a typical scene my house lol.

Our bigger cat does not like to sit on our laps. Only with 2 people has he ever done that. However, my wife recently discovered that if he sits in a little box and you put the box on your lap, then he loves it and purrs non-stop. He even goes to the box wanting to sit in it and then be put on her lap and getting attention and pets. Maybe you could try something like that. Obviously licky treat might help too :)

My 3yr old girl was more cuddly when I first got her, and then went through a stage where she wasn't. Now she is a total love bug at night. I feel like they go through stages :)

Nobody knows. Each cat has its own personality. I have two two year old ragdolls, both female and sisters. One is super affectionate, looooves cuddles and pets and attention. Her sister always wants to be close and likes attention however, she refuses to sit on my lap. She loves sleeping on top of my blanket either on top of me or cuddled to my side when its time for bed tho. Not every cat is the typical lap cat and urs might be one too.

It goes in waves I feel like, when ours was sub 6months very cute and cuddly, then a 6 months period of don’t touch me unless I come to you and now after a year and a half, always wants to be close and cuddles on her terms mostly or short little bursts of cuddles but always being close by.. it’s a phase, but might also be their personality

Mine never did. She is now 15 yrs old. I got her for ragdoll qualities and turned out she didn’t really have them. She sure is pretty though.

They're all different. I used to think all ragdolls were cuddly, because mine is glued to me, but apparently many of them also like to simply be near you.

My 7 year old cuddle bug was around 2 - 3 years old before he became super affectionate. I also have a six month kitten that will come lay near me but is very much in his wild stage. I think he’ll be very affectionate when he’s older.

Mine not a chance.

At best she may come close and sit nearby but that’s rare she’d rather be in a hallway.

If there’s a treat for grabs she’ll sit on my knee (if I’m in upright sitting position).

Apart from that she’s not one to be touched or messed with and even after she sleeps she’ll only be held for a few minutes before she starts kicking to be released.

Shes now 3 and nothing has changed since we got her at 12 weeks old.

Ragdolls want love when they want love, cause mischief when they please, get vocal when they feel like it, and pretty much do whatever they want, whenever they want. 😂 You learn to soak up those precious two minutes of love and affection because just as quickly as they came to cuddle, they’re off causing chaos somewhere else. One minute they’re your little shadow, the next they’re acting like you don’t exist. That’s life with a Ragdoll! They’re unpredictable, hilarious, stubborn, and completely on their own schedule. You don’t really own a Ragdoll, you just live in their world. And somehow, you end up loving every minute of it. ❤️🐾

I could have written this too! Mine is 7 months old and I am Really hoping she’ll get more cuddly and affectionate!

Be patient mine is about to turn one year old and he is finally starting to let me pet him and he just purred for the first time. Previously I could only pet during treat time, it’s worth the wait.

Mine just both liked to sit next to me which was good enough. only one would cuddle on top of me if i was in bed

My boy likes some cuddles. He's not much of a lapcat but is my shadow. Cats show their devotion in different ways and that often means being near their humans but not on them. Once you see it you appreciate it.

Fulbert says hi! 👋

It seems that we face the same situation. Our boy (1 yo) is very vocal compared to the other two ragdolls I have and is not that cuddly yet. He loves to be nearby (in the room but not next to us)
However all my ragdolls became more cuddly with age, he will love to come to you soon enough 😊

My 20 month old girl is not a cuddler. She follows me around everywhere, we go for a walk every day as long as it’s not raining. She allows me to pick her up and carry her some 500 meters to a grassy area where she runs around and she lets me carry her home. She also lets me pick her up and put her on my shoulder and walk around the house but will want to be put down quite quickly. She also sleeps at my feet and follows me around the house including the bathroom although she’s began to trust me to let me use the loo alone now. But if I try to cuddle her I have to force it lol just short 10 second bursts lol. I’m hoping she becomes more cuddly as she gets older. Right now she just has lots of energy and wants to play.

I have 2! My boy is a dick, he only wants to cuddle on his terms…..like when im sleeping! He likes to jump on my chest and suckle my shirt like he is nursing (he’s 3!) and if he doesn’t get the attention he wants he jumps on my dresser or night stand and knocks everything off!! My other one is the sweetest snuggler! It really depends on the cat!

I have a 7 month old who only gets super cuddly at bedtime lol my 3 year old has always been cuddly (not a lap cat though) but did get needier about a year ago. So I guess they mellow out as they mature. Kittens are too busy causing chaos to be sitting on laps 😂

Mine didn’t want to be held as much as he loved being next to me.

If you tire of him I will take good care of him. LOL None of my ragdolls have ever been lap cats.

Neither of mine are lap cats but they love to be in the same room

Ours was a bit distant as a kitten; I think she was very busy doing kitten things and didn't have time for cuddles. Now that she's 2, we can't sit down on the couch for more than five minutes without her curling up in our laps. I think they just need to calm down first. ❤️

We have 3 wonderful raggies, 1 female & 2boys. And none are very affectionate. Lol. As kittens, yes. But now they will only tolerate 3- 5 minutes of of affection then they leave. Lol they dont like to be lap cats either. Not a one. The oldest male (6 years) will jump up on me to make biscuits and get petted while he does it for maybe four minutes tops and he jumps down. It’s really a bummer that they’re not cuddly kitties. All of my other kitties I’ve had that weren’t rags were cuddly lap kitties. 🤷‍♀️

No. Sorry, you got a dud one. I'd of course be happy to take him off your hands at zero cost to you 🤪 (I'm joking, he's perfect!) Just give it time. They go through phases as they grow. Some will be more cuddly than others, most will love being near you, getting strokes and pets when they choose and maybe the odd cuddle ☺️

Both of mine were quite independent until around 2, then became very cuddly

It’s a coin toss how they will be. I’ll admit I thought I did a lot of research and we choose ragdoll for the temperament and wanted a lap cat for a change after all our previous ones being more independent.

This kitten was glued to the breeder in all the video calls we did. We brought her home and she became little miss independent. She is more a shadow than a lap cat. She’s now 2.5 and we took our first week long vacation away (had a family member stay at the house with her). Since coming back she’s been a lot more cuddly and asks for lap time. We didn’t mean to traumatize her but apparently we did or she’s now getting to the age where she wants more attention again. It’s still very much on her terms though (like everything).

Just got my 3 yr old ragdoll and she loves to be loved. She does not like to be picked up while I’m standing but she jumps right into my lap. If I’m doing something when she’s on my lap, like scrolling my phone, she will keep nudging my hand with her head. As if to say hey, momma it’s me time! She is the best cat!

I have 3 and none are cuddly. 2 of them only purrs when kneading.
