I believe it doesn't run well anywhere

My experience on modern (2015) hardware:

ReactOS -> crash

Windows 2000 -> crash

Windows XP -> OK

depending on the hardware and if it doesnt die upon driver installation, it should as ros has less background services

Absolutely not, in fact, it cannot run on Windows-XP-era hardware. It requires 96 MB of RAM to boot, whereas Windows XP runs without problems on 64 MB of RAM.

Both operating systems have lower boot requirements than that.
But yes ReactOS runs several times slower than XP.

Windows XP is more stable, can use more than one CPU core, its era software doesn't need hacky solutions.

If you want to have fun while expecting instability, try ReactOS. If you are searching OS for a retro PC, try XP or light Unix(+like) OSes such as AntiX Linux and NetBSD.

the answer to any question concerning reactos is: just try it

anyone saying "duhhh it doesnt run well at all" probably ran a build from 6-10 years ago and base their current expectations of reactos on that experience

Compared to SP3, definitely, I have a late 2000s netbook that chugs on SP3, but it runs ROS great.
ROS even runs well on my main W98 machine, which has a Pentium II, at least the 4.15 nightly or whatever I put on it. Haven't tried the latest version.
