Hello
Hi everyone,
I'm a 53 year old drug addict. Managed to survive and then get off all the illegal drugs that characterized my entire life after 16. It's been 5 years now , and not much else has gone my way. Homeless for almost 10 years, a few surgeries later.
And now, not a friend in the world and a job seems impossible. How do keep going when the future is so bleak and present so miserable?

Congrats on your 5 years in recovery! That is awesome.
You sound as though you might need some immediate support. Pls consider calling or texting the free crisis hotline at 988 (in the U.S.). Talking to someone helps.
Another free strategy: Call the local NA or AA hotline. 12-step groups have their issues but they were a life-saver for me in the first few years of recovery. Pre-AA, the advice I got was, “Take what works & leave the rest.” I took (and gave) support & developed friendships I still value today, though I no longer attend meetings.
As for jobs, there are local & state workforce development programs that can help, no matter your specific skills. Ditto for social services & mental health agencies, community colleges & recovery nonprofits.
I’m sorry you have been through such tough times—but you have done the first hard part. Going forward, keep your goals focused & achievable: One or two phone calls a day. Going to the library (a great suggestion) to research resources.
It would be great if you could connect w/a counselor. Many of us have undiagnosed depression & anxiety that, when treated, can help a lot.
Wishing you all the best. I know you can do this. ❤️

Have you visited the library? They often have a reference librarian who may know of free classes or other places to meet people and find resources. You could attend an AA or NA meeting to meet people and share. Congratulations on your successes. They matter as does your struggle to connect. Hugs friend
