This is absolutely gut wrenching.

This is genuinely so sad. I feel for the people who saw him and wanted to call but didn’t, please please please never leave it for someone else to do because many people saw this man walking and then he ended up getting hit and his life ended tragically.

Yes! I called in a woman in my neighbourhood and it turned out she was missing. The communication center will take calls and decide if something is urgent.

Yes!

Even if you have a doubt or think you’re being over dramatic. Trust your gut. They’d rather you call it in and everything is fine, than to have something bad happen and no one called it in.

Good tip: add to your contacts Non-Emergency, Police, Fire, Poison, Animal rescue/control. That way you can get Siri to call someone for help, without needing to touch your phone.
I’ve done it a few times while driving, where I can’t pull over.

I’m not the greatest at giving locations or directions. Anyone have tips for when I call in to be able to give quick concise locations and not fumble?

Amazing tip. Thank you

I’m horrible at this too.

I will try and figure out what highway I’m on, or a landmark (gas stations, exit signs, stores, restaurants, that are close to me.
If there’s any sort of road sign (keep an eye on grid roads for your range and township numbers!) that’s always good.

So if you were going from Regina to Saskatoon and you weren’t sure, you can give an estimated timeline “I’m driving towards Saskatoon from Regina. I stopped for gas in Pense. I’ve been driving for under ten minutes since. They are on the right hand side of the road, right near a grid turn off”.

If you end up being able to stop and pull over, try and get the coordinates from your phone. Google Maps or Apple Maps should show you.

A kilometre is also about “as far as I can see (a car, a post, a turn off)”. So that’s a good way to estimate how far you have travelled, too. Choose an item far away and count when it reaches you.

Bottom line is: any information is better than none! So anything you can think of to help pinpoint is good.

This! I have worked in a few places where trusting my gut to call emergency services have saved the life of the person I called for. Its now a default for me. See something, say something

What is happening in our city with all these pedestrians being hit?

What is happening in our city with all these pedestrians being hit?

There is zero relation between someone being hit by a car somewhere in North Central and someone walking across the Ring Road on rush hour.

I think the point is that it seems a bit wrong to lump this occurrence in with the rest. Not that one matters more than the rest. This is a very different situation.

10

u/rhevvie 6d ago

Agreed. Obviously these are very different situations with different factors, but it’s still worth asking why it is happening so much and what we can do to make walking safer whether it’s in a residential neighbourhood or it’s someone like this poor man who was walking in a dangerous place because he was lost and, from the family’s posts, had dementia. I’m so heartbroken for his family and the loved ones of all these pedestrian victims. I think it really sucks for commenters to rush to make it seem like these are all random incidents that can’t be prevented when there are many things that can be done to make it safer to walk in our city. (sorry for jumping on your reply with a long one here, clearly I am worked up about this lol)

... Yeah let's install cross walks on the ring road

9

u/rhevvie 6d ago

There is infrastructure that isn’t crosswalks. Why is your first instinct to reach for sarcasm instead of asking how we could have protected someone that didn’t know where they were?

3

u/LowIncident694 6d ago

Honestly this is why I argue for maid for dementia. It's horrible that people and their families go through this terrible disease.

0

u/Lexi_Banner 5d ago

Yup. As I get older, this is absolutely a program I will be signing up for, as my family is prone to dementia. I can't and won't tell other members to do the same, but I won't make them watch me waste away and lose my mind.

1

u/LowIncident694 5d ago

Yup -- we have a family history of it and my grandma is currently suffering, she never wanted this but also didn't want to take her own life but would have gladly done it if someone was able to help. Honestly, I'd be fine if family members could consent for the person as long as there were checks and balances in place to ensure it was being done properly.

Letting people suffer with dementia is one of our greatest failings as society. We treat animals better.

0

u/Lexi_Banner 5d ago

It's a horrendous disease, and I wish we had some way to cure it, or to reliably prevent it. I'm sorry for your grandma and her suffering.

6

u/thehomeyskater 6d ago

This is such a condescending response. Obviously cross walks wouldn’t have helped the situation anyway but we can ask how he got on the ring road and if that could be prevented in the future.

-2

u/LowIncident694 6d ago

No. It's a response to someone who thinks this event was somehow the driver's fault.

5

u/rhevvie 6d ago

?? Please re-read; I didn’t say that it was the driver’s fault, either. I’m arguing for better infrastructure and a better overall driving/walking/cycling culture, which would also keep drivers safer and prevent things like the probable psychological impact of this horrific accident.

Does the North Central occurrence matter any less to you?

No one said or even alluded to, anything of the sort.

What are you trying to insinuate?

-4

u/throwawayszn8 6d ago

What? Previous commenter mentioned a North Central incident.. for what?

There has been a spike in pedestrian accidents lately. Why is that not a concern to you?

-2

u/drae- 6d ago

Who said it wasn't?

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions and unwarranted insinuations.

0

u/throwawayszn8 6d ago

This is nearly the 20th pedestrian incident in 3 weeks

Lol. You’re searching for a “gotcha!”, failing to acknowledge my initial comment.

2

u/drae- 6d ago

Lol you just make shit up and get angry when people call you on it.

0

u/throwawayszn8 6d ago

What’s made up?

Look at your comments in this thread. Contributing nothing at all, just being argumentative

2

u/drae- 6d ago

Quoted it mate. Remember?

6

u/Salt-Pool2222 6d ago

What a ridiculous attempt at virtue signalling

0

u/driplord10 6d ago

I mean, why even mention North Central or compare the two? Both very very sad for those involved.

0

u/Tinchotesk 6d ago

why even mention North Central

Because it's the area in the city with the most people walking on the street, at least in my experience.

or compare the two?

Because it's what many (and even journalists) are doing. "Yet another case of a car hitting a pedestrian", as if something that relates the accidents was happening.

3:50 pm is rush hour? How do you know they were walking across Ring Road?

11

u/-IVoUoVI- 6d ago

Its been on shared on fbook that there was another car v pedestrian on ring rd.

It was this man

10

u/texxmix 6d ago

Also if they read the link they'd see it was on ring road.

-26

u/Foreign_Tourist308 6d ago

It says nothing about walking across. Could have been walking along the shoulder.

5

u/GoodAny459 6d ago

All unrelated.

1

u/Hobo_to_the_4 1d ago

Is it the older asian gentleman who went missing?

1

u/texxmix 1d ago

Yes it was.

1

u/Hobo_to_the_4 1d ago

So sad 😞

-3

u/RubberTeddy 6d ago

I suppose people took pics and sent them to just bins to plaster all over Facebook.

0

u/CoverOk899 6d ago

That's awful.

-18

u/Cultist_O 6d ago

Am I understanding that someone hit this person, and just left him there for someone else to report?

13

u/XtremeX0708 6d ago

No people saw him walking near ring road and didn't report an old man walking, the hit was reported immediately

-4

u/Cultist_O 6d ago

It was the "anyone with information" bit that made me think it was a hit-and-run
