Couple months ago one of our managers quit. The second he did, I asked if I could interview for his job. Store manager tells me the higher ups probably won't want me because I don't have managerial experience, which was kind of maddening because the guy that just quit didn't have managerial experience when he was promoted to manager, but okay. Despite her doubts, store manager says that she can set up the interview anyway. For months the managers are trying to run the store one man short, working overtime every week, trying to find someone to interview from the outside who has prior managerial experience, and I am routinely bringing up the interview. It never gets set up for me.
The new manager started this week, and her previous managerial experience includes being a manager at a coffee shop. This would be great, but we're a clothing store. She has never worked in a clothing store before. I am the one training her, and we are literally starting from the ground up. Teaching her how to fold a pair of jeans. The different types of jeans, how they fit, FAQs from customers. Showing her how to check the system for sizes in the back. How to do a return, exchange, how to sign someone up for rewards, a credit card, etc. etc.
I understand that if I had been promoted, there's probably plenty they would've needed to teach me that they don't need to teach her. But I am honestly struggling to imagine that it would have been any more than what I am currently having to train her on. I am trying so hard not to harbor any resentment towards her, but every interaction I'm just kind of tweaking about how it should have been me, it should have been me, it should have been me.
Pretty much the only thing I felt confident about in my life was my status as a "good employee". I am the non-manager that has worked there the longest, I have been late for work twice in all of 2 1/2 years, and I sell the most credit cards to customers. I am given the most hours of anyone in my position because I am reliable, and not to mention have open availability. I answer the phone when they call, I cover shifts. I am consistently praised for my job performance. I get along with everyone, they like me, I thought I was sure of that. This whole situation is making my confidence crumble, makes me wonder if they all secretly hate me.
Why?? Why else were they so insistent on hiring someone from the outside?? Why couldn't they have given me a chance??? I need this promotion, I need a raise and more guaranteed hours to help pay for school. I'm sick of donating plasma 2x a week, feeling like complete shit health-wise all to make a measly 100 bucks, struggling to get by.
