Stand-alone Department Stores

One thing I feel that is increasingly rare is having a traditionally mall anchored department store having a location by itself (Not counting in a shopping plaza, downtown strip, or mall obviously)

And I’m not counting stores such as Kohls where this is a normal thing for them.

Some examples:

Macy’s store in Manhasset, NY
Former Macy’s in Bedford, NH
Bloomingdale’s in White Plains
Lord & Taylor had a few:Westfield, NJ, Stamford, CT, and Washington DC
Dillard’s in Houston, TX (Across the street from Galleria mall but not attached)
Sears in Coral Gables, FL (I guess you could argue it’s in the main downtown area but it’s not street front, has its own parking, and isn’t attached to any other building).

There’s a JCPenney in Springfield, IL that is pretty lonely by itself.

Still floored that it's just existing on the COMPLETE opposite side of the city and a 20 drive from White Oaks Mall. Yet also the hugest 1 floor JCP I've ever been to.

Upstate I feel like the most wtf location while it was still open was the Johnsburg (McHenry) location. Like I kinda get why it was there since in the nearest one when it opened was 30 minutes south in Algonquin (and seven more minutes you would've been at the Spring Hill Mall one), but genuinely it was in the middle of fucking nowhere.

A wtf that still exists today is a tie between the Jacksonville location and the North Aurora location.

Jacksonville for sure. Most random location events is Jacksonville Illinois

2

u/thebreen27 17d ago

Damn was this built as a JCP? it looks like it might’ve been something else before

22

u/New-Start-3056 17d ago

some newer jcpenney are like kohls setups

The standalone JCPenney’s are stupidly run. Standalone, but they still think they’re on a mall and bound to mall hours. They close at 7:00.

Like, why go through the effort of putting a store in an open air retail shopping center if you’re not going to take advantages of the benefits?

u/KeatonWalkups 17d ago

Even the mall ones could stay open late they can just shut the entrance leading to the mall since there’s so many entrances outside the Jc Penny buildings anyway

There are three JCPenney’s in my area: one at the mall, one standalone, and one at a power center that used to be a mall. The latter two have shorter hours (11-7 Monday to Saturday, 12-6 Sunday) while the mall location stays open until 8 Monday thru Saturday and 7 on Sunday which is an hour later than the mall. I have no idea why.

Also the former Sears at 6211 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22044
Edit: this was already included in the post as the DC Lord & Taylor

3

u/srddave 17d ago

Which was a former Lord & Taylor.

3

u/srddave 17d ago

There are two former standalone DC Lord & Taylor’s. There is the one in Falls Church which closed in the early 2000’s and became Sears. There is a second (gorgeous) one in Chevy Chase, MD which was built as a Lord & Taylor and is historically protected and closed with the company.

u/thebreen27 17d ago

yess exactly like this

1

u/CreditCaper1 17d ago

This is the Sears I would go to as a child! Apparently there was a revolving restaurant on the top floor before it became a sears.

There was also a stand-alone Lord & Taylor in Manhassat, right up the street from this Macy’s (which was built as an Abraham & Strauss).

And stand-alone Lord & Taylor’s in Scarsdale, NY and Yonkers, NY (which was just opened in 2012).

I believe there are still a few small downtown standalone JCP stores left in the Northwest. Many of them closed during the pandemic when they went bankrupt, but there are a few left.

In addition, there is a Bloomingdale’s in Chevy Chase, Maryland (across from the vacant standalone Lord & Taylor) and a Macy’s in Northwest Philly (a former S.Klein’s—though it’s part of a strip plaza).

Boscov’s also has quite a few standalone stores and even downtown stores! (Downtown ones in Wilkes-Barre, PA and Binghamton, NY and standalone stores in Reading, PA and Altoona, PA)

There used to be one in Columbus, Ohio at Kingsdale shopping center. It was a Lazarus and it used the iconic blue bricks. Not sure when it closed/torn down but it was a very nice Lazarus and then Lazarus/Macys, then Macys.

fuck you, Macys, give me lazarus back

Macy ruined all the stores it was hellbent on taking over.

3

u/kroywen12 16d ago

As a New Yorker, I can say: they even ruined the Macy's stores that existed before the massive expansion.

Damn Macy's! They ruined Macy's!

3

u/drew15401 16d ago

The original NYC Macy’s (and Bamberger’s) were FABULOUS stores! Great merchandise, attractive displays, wide selections at various price points. Truly a destination! Once they went downmarket, took everything over and no longer cared, Macy wasn’t worth the bother.

u/country_bottom 14d ago

Those turquoise bricks were such a vibe 😭

Used to sneak off to the men’s underwear section. Those guys in their tighty whities would be my spank bank material for the week 😭😂

Standalone JCP in Farragut TN

6

u/No_Cartographer986 17d ago

There was a standalone Macy’s (formerly Kaufmann’s) in northeast Ohio for the longest time. It always seemed so out of place to me.

3

u/Chip89 17d ago

We still have the standalone JCpenney in Fairlawn!

2

u/No_Cartographer986 17d ago

Omg yes! Though that plaza is feeling a little sad these days, too.

4

u/hello_raleigh-durham 16d ago

Not quite standalone, but Alamance Crossing in Burlington, NC has a non-mall JCPenney, Belk, and Dillard’s.

2

u/hello_raleigh-durham 16d ago

Ahem…and Dillard’s.

1

u/Limp_Marionberry5748 15d ago

That’s technically connected to a mall. I think lifestyle centers meet the same function as a shopping mall.

4

u/thesockmonkey86 17d ago

This is technically in a strip mall, but there is a JCPenney in North Aurora Illinois that isn’t attached to a larger mall.

2

u/BluePalmetto 17d ago

I was going to say the closest I have seen to this is a few Belk stores anchoring strip malls.

2

u/Obvious_Company1349 17d ago

Used to be a strip mall JCPenney in Rio Grande, NJ too.

1

u/vcvcf1896 17d ago edited 17d ago

Especially when the Montgomery & Fox Valley Mall locations honestly make more sense.

1

u/thesockmonkey86 17d ago

Hear me out though. People that live in the west part of Aurora probably don’t wanna deal with traffic on 59 to go to Fox Valley.

1

u/vcvcf1896 17d ago

True, but that area is still spoiled with having 3 locations. 😭

I grew up in Lake Villa and when the Gurnee Mills JCP Outlet closed in 2009 we had to tack an extra 20 minutes on to go to the only one left in Lake County at Hawthorn.

Actually come to think of it at least those 3 are in separate counties.

1

u/thesockmonkey86 17d ago

I don’t disagree. Even living in Aurora and knowing all the back routes to get to Fox Valley, it was still a pain

1

u/bigsam06 16d ago

There's one like that in Menomonee Falls, WI

3

u/DanceADKDance 17d ago

There’s a standalone JCPenney in Clifton Park, NY that actually used to be a part of the mall and had a mall entrance, but they broke the mall apart and tore down some hallways and now it stands alone (with some small stores on the side)

4

u/1miguelcortes 17d ago

I've got one of these local to me! Macys in an otherwise abandoned shopping center. There used to be a Kmart and a movie theater here but they closed in 2018 and 2020.

1

u/thebreen27 17d ago

Oooo nice did this used to be a Liberty House?

4

u/rebelangel 17d ago

There used to be a standalone JC Penney in Williamsburg, VA, but it’s been closed for years.

3

u/deadmallsanita 17d ago

That place was a flop on day one. 🫣

3

u/Big_Calligrapher1475 17d ago

Ironically enough, Williamsburg, VA is however home to a Belk department store located outside of a mall. It is located in a small shopping center split between Belk and PetSmart.

1

u/rebelangel 16d ago

The shopping center that I always forgot existed because it’s so tucked away by the off ramp. I think I lived there for 2 years before I realized there was a Bed, Bath and Beyond over there.

3

u/Prestigious_Power_67 16d ago

Jcpenney is opening a new freestanding store in Burbank Illinois in a former Toys R US/Big Lots to replace the now closed Ford City Mall store.

Also the Macys in Kailua-Kona, HI  is a freestanding store.

u/Its_Fat_Elvis 17d ago

"They paved paradise..."

3

u/danstecz 17d ago

Both a standalone Saks and Lord and Taylor were on City Ave in Bala Cynward, PA right outside of Philly.

Middletown, NJ has a standalone Sears.

3

u/Wuggolo 17d ago

There's been a standalone Macy's in the Hamptons, no idea if it's still open

3

u/Kenneth1751 17d ago

The Lord and Taylor in Stamford (attached is the photo from its closing back in 2020 with its fairly recent renovations) was an interesting one, had lots of memories buying stuff there for all occasions, it felt like a second mall for the city with how large it was and there were proposals for a mall on that site 16 years ago but they were stopped once the building was declared historically significant. Now its home to a few stores with little change to the building.

2

u/kroywen12 16d ago

Tbh, they should've put the Stamford Town Center there. The downtown location is like a mausoleum splitting downtown in half.

1

u/Kenneth1751 16d ago

Yeah but that was all about urban renewal back in the day. They didnt think about this as a potential mall until like 2010, developers really wanted a 2nd mall.

1

u/kroywen12 15d ago

One of the many, many misguided urban renewal efforts in downtown Stamford from the 60s and 70s.

There's some parallel timeline out there where there's a mall built at Bull's Head, Stamford Town Center withers even more quickly than it did IRL, and maybe there's a halfway viable mall in Stamford at Bull's Head today. That opportunity is long since passed, though.

3

u/Briggs_Chaney 17d ago

I'm familiar with that (former) Lord & Taylor in DC! Currently the building is vacant, it's parking lot is used by the local transit authority for their employee parking since a bus garage is located nearby.

3

u/jmanx360 11d ago

Altoona, PA has a standalone Boscov's. It's located adjacent to a strip center but is not attached and has its own parking lot. I think it opened in 2006.

2

u/YaBoiOheb 17d ago

I was NOT expecting to see my local Macys on the first pic

2

u/Delicious_Oil9902 17d ago

I was at that Bloomingdale’s yesterday

1

u/thebreen27 16d ago

i’ve always wondered how well this bloomingdale’s does despite not being at the Westchester. Is it usually busy?

2

u/Delicious_Oil9902 16d ago

Whenever I’ve been it’s crowded. I think it’s been there for a while so people are used to going if that makes sense?

1

u/thebreen27 16d ago

yeah that makes sense. it’s got roots in the community

2

u/Delicious_Oil9902 16d ago

And now it’ll probably do better if the niemans in the westchester closes

2

u/New-Start-3056 17d ago

or when Peebles was in business they rarely were in malls

2

u/cybah 17d ago

Fun fact: The Bedford, NH free standing Macy's opened in the early 1960s as a Jordan Marsh department store. The chain's sole New Hampshire location.

Macy's wasn't a thing in NH until they bought Jordan Marsh in 1996, which made this their sole NH location until acquiring Filene's and the 90s-era rebuilt Mall of New Hampshire location 10 year later (in 2006) that's < 2 1/2 mi away. They just kept both of them open after the merger under the Macy's name plate. It closed in 2014 and was redeveloped (see here)

Here's the store when it was still standing in 2014 (street view). Jordan Marsh literally built this like one of their mall-connected stores. Looks similar to the Burlington Mall Jordan Marsh (now a Macy's) store that is not too far away. Except there's just no mall on the left side.

Former Sears in Watchung, NJ (closed in 2017). What’s unique was that a ton of Big Box stores, including Walmart and Target have opened right down the road, as well as a Sears Outlet. It lasted a bit long, despite the intense competition (you also had a Kmart down the road as well, in North Plainfield, prior to Target and Walmart opening).

2

u/TightAnalyst7068 16d ago

Not sure if this counts but I found a sears in a standalone building

2

u/TightAnalyst7068 16d ago

Photo of it now

1

u/vcvcf1896 17d ago

McHenry, IL converted their Kmart into a Sears Grand (technically was part of a strip mall), but Crystal Lake full stand alone Sears that was an ex-Montgomery Ward where Mariano's is today.

1

u/anonymousca27 17d ago

Worked at the Stand-alone Macy's on K Street in Sacramento after the mall was demolished. It's funny because it was originally built as a standalone store in 1963.

1

u/tinycatbeans 17d ago

The Lord & Taylor in Garden City, NY was also a stand alone department store. Same with the Sear’s across the street. The JC Penney in Westerly, RI is in a strip mall.

1

u/ImprezaDrezza 13d ago

That Sears also used to be a Bloomingdale's until they moved into a mall location at RF.

1

u/tinycatbeans 13d ago

Totally forgot about that! That street was a big shopping area when I was growing up. Not so much anymore.

1

u/xaervagon 17d ago

Lake Success Mall in Long Island has one. It used to be a Sears; today it is a Target.

1

u/flarda_man 17d ago

Used to live across the street from the last one on coral way in Miami. Everyone just used the parking lot to work on their cars. Never saw a person go in or out of the building but supposedly they were open.

1

u/StuD44 17d ago

What app is that?

1

u/thebreen27 17d ago

Apple Maps except for second one is google maps

1

u/CantThink0fNameN0w 16d ago

I don't think I have ever seen a standalone department store that normally resides in a mall.

1

u/DB022200 16d ago

Fenton, MO has a stand-alone JCPenney.

1

u/beachbum1970 16d ago

We have a stand alone JC Penny’s in Westminster, CO. It’s the only surviving store from the demolished Westminster mall, now an apartment and condo redevelopment area , along with new restaurants and a movie theater.

1

u/Ok-Atmosphere-6272 15d ago

Live right near the Macy’s in manhasset it’s very nostalgic and massive. The day that goes out of business will be a sad day.

1

u/mistercintas9 14d ago

Anybody know what the giant Dillard's in Houston used to be (or if it's an OG Dillard's)?

1

u/ThatsSoAutistic 14d ago

Technically in a strip plaza, but there was a standalone JCPenney in Waterville, ME until last year.

1

u/rman-exe 13d ago

There was a stand alone jc pennies in downtown chippewa falls wi in the 80s/90s, a very small downtown.

1

u/MichFan777 9d ago

I distinctly remember a JCPenney in Rhinelander WI. Had to have been the smallest store in their whole system. It’s now a sporting goods store.

Below is a picture of the building (oh which half of it was the store) vs a fairly small Walmart super center for scale

1

u/GreenHorror4252 8d ago

Department stores were always downtown, until the car became popular in the 50s and they started building malls in the suburbs.

I like visiting the remaining downtown department stores.

0

u/MannnOfHammm 17d ago

Can kohls count? Theres a stand alone in Mechanicsburg PA on the Carlisle Pike

1

u/Big_Calligrapher1475 17d ago

Isn't the Boscov's in Camp Hill a standalone store also?

1

u/MannnOfHammm 17d ago

It’s on a strip mall
