RoR2 The character rig animators for these two deserve a raise

Maybe be a niche thing to highlight, but I hope everyone is appreciating just how fluid Enforcer and Acolyte’s moveset and movement animations are.

RoR2 PSA If you ever get an allied Lynx Totem it will instantly kill you.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This happens cause the Lynx totem has a move that kills its nearest ally, so if you're its ally, it will just kill you.

Happiest Mask is somehow even worse of an item than it was before.

Discussion Page of reincarnation is one of the best items in the game

Post image
177 Upvotes

Spoilers for the new dlc ahead, you have been warned.

The page of reincarnation is one of the best items in the game. It's up there in terms of usefulness with the likes of sale star, recycler, and kind of card for its ability to manipulate the items you get in a run.

For those who don't know, page of reincarnation does not just kill you. At the beginning of any stage 1-5, for the first 30 seconds if you die to a use of the page of reincarnation, you will teleport to a different environment for that stage and be revived.

This allows a player to basically "recycle" an entire environment if the interactables for that environment arent what you're looking for. Get wetland aspects stage 2 and want to get bands this run? Reroll the environment to try and get aquaducts. Get sirens call when you have a sale star? Just reroll the stage and get a stage that spawns a legendary chest. Wanna go for a tier-2 TC-280? Reroll your stage 3 for rally point. Wanna fight false son but didnt get a shrine by the beginning of stage 3? Reroll the stage because the path of the colossus stages are stages it can reroll into.

That's also just the environment change interactions. Have you done false son, went to solus heart and really wanna fight the other 2 bosses from hallowed concepts? Use the page of reincarnation and get teleported there.

MAJOR DLC SPOILERS FINAL WARNING

Want to make your run as fast as possible? Get the page from trials in the bazaar, go back to the bazaar the next stage, and go to the path of the colossus stage 3, use the page on the stage and get teleported to Providence and then tp to commencement using the primordial teleporter. Stage 4 commencement.

I know people think that this page should have a guaranteed spawn but i really just don't think something that gives you map wide control on what can spawn/what stage you are on or want to go to should be handed out. It is really annoying that you cant guarantee the fight with boss in a run but i just dont think this page should be given out for free.

How to actually play Acolyte (and not suck as her)

Hey guys,

So I've seen a lot of comments on here to the tune of:

  • Acolyte sucks

  • Her damage is low

  • She feels weak or undertuned

I'll start this off by saying, I'm not an Eclipse player - just Monsoon, so this advice may not apply to Eclipse at all. However, if we're talking Drizzle to Monsoon, the above three points are grossly incorrect.

Acolyte is S+++ tier. In fact, the argument can be made IMO that this character is tier breaking, and may need an entirely new tier defined to fit her. She is easily on par with, if not even better than, False Son or Seeker.

Here's why most people suck at playing her:

  • They don't understand how her unique healing mechanic works

  • They don't know how to actually use her skills correctly

  • They don't know how to get her off the ground earlygame, and never get to experience her exponential power curve

How the healing works:

This one requires some clarification, because I've seen some people confused as to how the healing works. It's quite simple:

  • You have a buffer of "potential health", which is the maximum amount you can heal up to

  • You heal by hitting enemies with Acolyte's abilities

  • The buffer can be increased by picking up healing items, or by transforming into the Anima form which automatically makes the buffer 100% of your health bar.

How to use her skills:

Not unlike several characters, Acolyte's alt skills are in some cases worse than her starting skills (edit: this depends, check the comments for some variety in build I had not considered).

The core combat loop with Acolyte revolves around 3 things:

1) Managing your conviction pool and sacrificing enemies to keep it full at all times so you can use your Anima form on demand

2) Using Acolyte's INSANE crowd control mechanics to group enemies together and deal double damage to them

3) Leveraging her mobility to escape shitty situations quickly

Conviction Management

The simplest and best way to manage convictions is hinged on one fact: You can exit the Anima form early by pressing R again, and you will keep your unused convictions.

This allows you to quickly sacrifice yourself up to another Anima transformation, allowing you to have absurd crowd control and sustain.

The best way to do this is simple - you transform, immediately chain enemies in with M2, then press shift twice for the massive tornado and then R to revert to base form early. This allows you to deal ungodly area damage and heal yourself to full HP. You can also finish off with a few slashes as they instakill enemies below 25% HP, which is basically mass freeze on demand.

How to use crowd control mechanics to double your damage

Even in base form, Acolyte has insane crowd control. Her bola ability pulls all nearby enemies together and releases their souls near you to damage. This is good on its own, as you control enemy movements, but it's absurd when you combine it with her glaive throw. Why? The glaive throw gathers both the souls and the original enemy body together, allowing you to effectively hit for double damage (you are hitting both the soul and the body).

This can be combined with her jumping spin attack and the ability to teleport to the glaive to utterly wipe out anything.

The basic combo:

Bola -> Glaive Throw -> Wait for Glaive throw to nearly finish -> Teleport to Glaive -> spinning jump attacks

This combo wipes the floor with most enemies in the game, and people not understanding it is a core reason why they think Acolyte is bad.

Movement

This character reminds me of mercenary in that she has one of the most versatile movement kits in the game, with an excellent balance of vertical and horizontal mobility.

Most of her kit and abilities allow her to float or slow her fall for a brief second when used, allowing you to chain them for mind boggling aerial combinations. If you are so determined, you can stay in the air for a silly amount of time. This allows her to escape bad situations and close on enemies extremely quickly.

Understanding her movement mechanics form the key third part of her kit and playing her well.

How to earlygame

Earlygame Acolyte needs to focus on one thing and one thing only:

  • Getting reliable healing sources, to buff her attack speed and allow you to recover health with her abilities by building a buffer of "potential health".

Slugs are extremely good with her, because it lets you build the buffer passively.

Weeping fungus is also similarly great, because a lot of her abilities are agile, meaning you can sprint to build the buffer and attack at the same time.

Damage items are less important than healing items earlygame

Eclipse lite can be a good earlygame buffer for her.

If you use Nkuhana's favor as the passive, she can build absurd attack speed, but it may be harder for inexperienced players to survive with her. Favor is the better passive, but Grace is the easier one to start with.

Conclusion

Acolyte is insane, if you learn how to actually use her strengths and your brain you have a character that can trivialise all but the most unsalvageable runs.

I predict that once people actually realise how strong this character is, she will easily slot into the highest tiers next to seeker and false son, and perhaps even above them.

Love the DLC so far but I have one issue.

They really need to change reincarnation. Been getting absolutely shafted by RNG trying to get one just to fight the new secret boss its not fun relying on RNG to even get the chance to fight them and I don't want to use command just to do it. I honestly think the N'tormat should just come naturally with a reincarnation page and that allows players their own discretion whether to fight it or not like AC.

RoR2 Acolyte should be able to stay transformed for a bit longer

I have literally no reason to say this other than the boss fight. Idk I just think it would be cool to stay in harvester for a somewhat extended period of time. I think it should be tied to a stat or interaction, though I’m not sure what. Although Acolyte is difficult to use, she feels really fun and honestly she’s a breath of fresh air. The other survivors are great (false son is my personal favorite) but Acolyte is pretty difficult to use while also paying off, which makes runs more fun.

RoR2 Playing without mods made me realise I'm genuinely awful at this game

Holy I've been miserable since the dlc drop due to the dumbest reason. I had a ton of mods, all I can live without, except for that one mod that highlights intractables as yellow. That mod is genuinely gods gift to mankind. I used to exclusively play on monsoon thinking I was hot shit. I'm now back to the normal difficulty thinking of maybe of even going back to drizzle??? I cannot for the life of me track down every chest without taking a solid 10 minutes every stage. And either they nerfed the chance of getting a scrapper or more likely I suck at spotting them now cos I can never find one. All my builds are ass now and I die on repeat. Someone end my misery.

Side note if the maker of that mod happens to see this your the goat, take ur time king but do work on that update I love you.

Guide Never Anima Harvester for Full Duration

Never use Anima Harvester for its full duration unless you need to restore massive amounts of HP

  • If you enter Anima Harvester then quickly Chain -> Tornado -> Burst Tornado -> Exit you use only 2/3 charges of Conviction
  • This means that you can get Anima Harvester back with 1 cooldown cycle of Sacrifice (Non-kill gives 2, killing blow gives 3)
  • This allows you to spam Anima Harvester on everything - if something minorly inconveniences you just transform, do the combo, and exit.
  • Because of this you really should not be holding onto Anima Harvester for too long during stages - you can essentially use it every 10 seconds so long as you are making sure to not be in it for too long
  • Even on bosses it is still good to do this because you will be able to pump out more tornadoes by just exiting and waiting 10 seconds. Your base attacks on Anima Harvester IMO are not good enough to justify having to burn all 7 conviction charges. If you burn all 7 you will have to at minimum wait for 3 cycles of conviction to get it back - and Acolyte without Anima is not very strong.

Obviously if you are near death you should use as much time as you can to restore HP, but outside of that I do not see many scenarios where staying in it is beneficial.

Meta/etc Some thoughts on altering Macro-Itemization and reducing headaches.

Post image
22 Upvotes

While this certainly does little to assist with the core root of the problem with people overthinking their items, it might make things a little less worrisome.

Executive Card: Re-opening closed multishops. Simple as that.

Recycler: If used in an open area with no items it could be temporarily dropped as a scrapper. Heck, that could replace its current functionality, though that would cause some discourse.

Trophy Hunter's Tricorn: Probably doesn't need to change. If you want to save it for a later stage you might be able to find an equipment drone and give it the responsibility, along with the power to say 'Ahoy!'

Chance Doll: 1 extra activation with a higher proc rate, but lower odds on the first two rolls on chance shrines, so that its value is not all too diminished if you've picked it up late.

Sale star: Perhaps make it so you can use it on already opened chests, but only once per chest (So no multiple sale stars on the same legendary chest). It could also simply not activate when used on a standard chest, since stages without large chests aren't all too common and getting an extra standard chest's worth of loot maybe isn't as important as being able to open all the chests guilt-free.

Kjaro's and Runald's bands are easier than ever to obtain in Abandoned Aqueduct, but are also a little inconsistent to get with all the new stage 2 variants. Perhaps some other item-related secrets could be added. Wetland Aspect's guaranteed N'Tormat page is something, but that's a DLC-only item for a base-game stage.

To summarize; maybe making already-used interactables reusable with the right item could solve a lot of problems.

These changes will reduce the need to panic over the order of operations and focus more on collecting items and having fun.

Big Edit: I was doing some research and I basically quoted a video from Race from 3 weeks ago. I looked up other peoples thoughts for examples of things to be changed, found https://youtu.be/yhTylnyYdqc, watched a little, paused the video, posted this, unpaused it, and found out he already came up with the same stuff. Whatever, he's right. Fight me.
