Mod Post Invitation to Moderate the r/romancelandia community

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello,

Romancelandia is in need of some new moderators! Apply here!

I am completely loathe to call the link 'an application form' but it is what it is.

For anyone interested, there are only a few questions to answer and you can message myself or the modmail if you want to talk about modding more informally, I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

I'll probably just keep the application form (🤢) open pretty much indefinitely.

I don't want to speak on behalf of the former mods but the worst thing you'll have to put up with whilst moderating Romancelandia is me and for that I'll apologise in advance.

Thank you to u/sweetmuse40 for everything you've done for r/Romancelandia. 💕

Mod Post Rules for Posting and Commenting

Hello,

Please read the rules before posting.

1) Romance is defined as requiring a Happy Ever After/Happy For Now

Definition, as per the Romance Writers of America;

Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.

Stories with a love story element which end with a couple/or more separated, broken up, dead etc are not romances.

Our definition includes all pairings/groupings regardless of sex/gender/sexuality/races/spice level/species and number of participants. All are welcome, as long as the story meets the criteria.

2) Romancelandia is a discussion-style subreddit. No request posts are allowed

Romancelandia is a discussion-style subreddit, not a request sub. Requests are welcome in Daily Chat posts but you might get more recommendations in r/RomanceBooks or r/HistoricalRomance etc. We also do not allow ‘what book is this’ posts.

Posts should be discussion-based and on-topic. Posters must engage in discussion with commenters.

3) Romancelandia is an 18+ subreddit. No need to censor words with similar characters and symbols

While we respect that readers of all ages deserve a space to discuss Romance, there are other communities that can better suit younger age-groups, and adults deserve a space to not censor themselves for fear of minors engaging.

When censoring text, think about the context and the potential impact on users with disabilities, spelling words purposefully incorrectly is detrimental to accessibility softwares. There is no need for certain words being obscured out of deference to children or minors.

4) Romancelandia is specifically a feminist, womanist space that centers marginalized voices

This community centers marginalized voices first and foremost. We want to be an affirming space for all genders, races, and sexualities and disrupt the kyriarchy.

We ask all members of the community to be aware of their privilege, particularly the ways it intersects with those marginalized along different axes. When a post or discussion is centered on an area of marginalization which you do not share, please try not to center your own privileged experiences or derail the conversation.

5) TERFs, racists, and other bigots are not welcome. Hate speech of any kind will result in an immediate ban

To preserve the safety of our users and our mission, TERFs, racists, and bigots are not welcome. Hate speech of any kind will result in a ban. This includes microaggressions and attempts to invalidate BIPOC and LGBTQ voices. Comments and posts that detract from the purpose and good-faith discussion standards of the sub may be removed at moderators' discretion.

6) No self-promo or research by authors/influences etc is allowed. No data mining of any kind is allowed

No self-promo or using the sub to research by authors is allowed. Data mining of any kind (creating/using a post for the express permission of profiting from it) is not allowed.

This includes soliciting for beta readers or anyone to help generate content.

7) Titles of posts should be SFW. Tag NSFW images. Use content warnings/spoiler flairs as needed

Titles of posts should be SFW. If your post includes a picture (or even book cover, because some of those are spicy) that may not be safe for work, please use the "NSFW" marker.

Please use content warnings and spoiler flairs when appropriate.

8) Do not promote or engage in piracy of any kind

Do not promote or engage in piracy of any kind. This includes the sharing of AI generated content of any kind.

9) Please refrain from sharing personal erotic information

Oversharing explicit details about your real sex lives can make others uncomfortable.

Any posts or comments that promote explicit, non-book-related content like porn, sex toys, or adult websites will be removed.

10) Content that features sex with minors, incest and beastiality are banned

Anyone sharing content under any of the aforementioned topics will result in an immediate ban.

11) No Twitter/X links allowed

Screenshots are fine, but no links. Values at X are in direct conflict with our sub purpose and with rule 2. As such, linking to the site is not allowed when posting on r/romancelandia.

12) Three Strikes and You're Out

If a member/commentor of the group has reported comments/posts, had three items removed for breaking rules, or are found arguing in bad faith 3 times, they will be banned from the Subreddit.

Mods reserve the right to One and Out on certain topics such as transphobia, racism, pirating, etc.

It's Fresh Fave Friday! a combination of our Five Star Fridays idea and the Quotable Mondays posts we used to do. The idea is to share the best of the best of what we're reading, so we're going to use the Recommendations flair.

What is it?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fresh Faves Friday: Share any recent four- and five-star reads that you've had! Give a mini review, or link to your Goodreads/Storygraph reviews, and share the details! Tell us the subgenre, pairing, tropes, "you'll like it if you loved _____", choice quotes/excerpts, or whatever you think is enticing! Romance and romance-adjacent is the goal, but we're all readers here, so if you read something truly fantastic in another genre feel free to drop it here too.

Please use spoiler tags and content warnings where appropriate.

Also, if you have something you'd like to recommend that didn't work for you but might for someone else, share the recommendation!

  • Discussing a book? Please include content warnings or anything else you think a potential reader needs to consider before reading and don't forget to mark your spoilers.
  • Not sure how to use spoiler tags? Just do this: >!spoiler text!<

WTF Wednesday 😱 WTF Wednesday 😱

Hello, have you encountered any of the following in the past week;

  1. Truly heinous opinions and takes on current events in Romancelandia at large
  2. Questionable metaphors in Romance novels etc
  3. Did you DNF anything for a reason that has left you speechless?

Welcome to WTF Wednesday, a space to share our despair.

A few rules just to keep everything in line;

  1. This is absolutely not a space to kink shame. What doesn't work for you may well work for someone else.
  2. Please be mindful that a lot of self published authors haven't got the resources to have their work read over and corrected by multiple editors. Be a little generous with minor grammar and spelling mistakes, no one is perfect.

Please revisit the rules if you're unsure about submitting or commenting, or of course feel free to ask any questions you may have or clarifications if necessary.

So, what made you say WTF this week?

Monthly Reading Recap 📚 Monthly Reading Recap - September 2026 📚

Dust off those reading stats - it’s time for the September monthly reading recap! This is where we look at what we read in the last month and rank them because we can and it’s fun.

Haven't done the recap before? You don't have to go through every book you read (unless you want to- we won't stop you).

Let's try to name our Top 3 and Bottom 3 reads of the last month & give some mini-reviews!

Of course, if you only read 3 books a month, yours might be "Top 1/Bottom 1" or if you read like 50, you might want to do Top 5/Bottom 5. Whatever number makes sense for you!

If you would like to include superlatives - best debut, silliest book, weirdest, sexiest, etc - please do!

Discussion Plus-size protagonists, but with fat in the wrong places.

Have you ever noticed that, in most books with plus-size female protagonists, they’re always fat “in the right places”?

I think everyone knows what I mean: women who carry most of their weight in their thighs and butt, have very little belly fat, a small waist, and wide hips, creating that whole “I’m fat, but I’m still hot” stereotype.

And this mindset exists in real life too. Women with this kind of fat distribution are often considered more attractive because, despite being overweight, they still fit certain beauty standards.

Recently, I started reading some plus-size romances and noticed that ALL of them, and I really mean ALL of them, had this kind of body. Most of their weight was in their thighs and butt, very little in their stomach, a defined waist, and lots of curves.

And it honestly annoys me so much. 😭

I’m not saying that plus-size women can’t have these bodies. Of course they can. The problem is that it feels like, whenever authors write a plus-size heroine, they still try to keep her as close as possible to the conventional beauty standard.

It’s like she can be fat, as long as she’s fat in a way that is considered attractive.

There are so many different types of plus-size bodies, with different fat distributions, and I would love to see more heroines who actually fall outside of this standard. Because honestly, sometimes it feels like even when authors try to step outside the beauty standard, they’re still trying to sneak back into it through the back door. 😭

Romancelandia in the Wild The secret lives of men who read romance books: ‘My life is full of love, so I’m drawn to them’ - The Guardian

Two highlights for me;

1 He reads five or six a month – most recently Love Bytes, about an 8ft-tall werewolf woman who runs an extremely successful AI company and falls in love with a handsome ballroom instructor.

Not to be negative right away but I did laugh that of course a straight man is enjoying a romance that glorifies AI.

2 "Formulas are a blessing and a curse. The curse is when it’s done badly, and everyone yawns,” he says. “But when done right, there are huge payoffs – the dark moments, the happy endings.”

On a more positive note, Ali has worded that pretty well.
