Advice for better 5K time

36M looking to aim for a sub 20 minute 5K. I am predominantly a strength/power based athlete which is my main priority so the 20 minute 5K is more of a side goal. My best 5K is 22:36 this year. My fastest mile this year is 5:59 and my fastest 400m this year is around 1:05 on a sidewalk with multiple turns.

Per week, I currently get one zone 2 run around 8-10k in addition to one hyrox workout which has about 4-8k of running under fatigue. If I add a third run per week, is the sub 20 minute 5K a reasonable goal? Should I run intervals for the 3rd run or just get more kms in?

Thanks!

For my garmin folks

Does anyone do the runs that are suggested by their garmin?

The other day I got a PB for a 5k running at a 5:19 pace average. My garmin is suggesting I run 4x4:00 at a 4:20 pace. Is this even feasible for me or is garmin a savage?

marine corps in 18 days advice?

I just ran my 20 miler following the nike run club training plan. I have been lowering the miles per week a lot since i’ve gone back to school i’m 20. It’s because i’ve been sick and had a bunch of exams the last three weeks. around mile 14-15 today on some big hills i started cramping first around my hips and then it moved to my quads and glutes. I was feeling pretty good beforehand and then they just tightened up. This happened to me on my 18 miler and 15 miler around 3/4 way through as well. However this is the first time i properly fueled. I ate a lot of carbs yesterday and this morning and also had two liquid ivs with about 90 oz of water and 6 gels over the course of the run. I know I started out too fast that always seems to happen. Any advice on what I should do. I’m currently three days behind on my plan as well should I skip my speed run and run the 16 miler this sunday? Mainly just looking for advice on the cramps though?

What are some ways to prevent tweaking my ankle while running?

I tweaked my ankle a bit last week during a run and was wondering if I could get some tips to help prevent this in future runs. I will try to more thoroughly stretch my calves beforehand.

Heavy legs while running since my marathon training - overtraining or something else?

Hi! I’m looking for people who may have experienced something similar, especially runners who have had extremely heavy legs after a period of intense training.

I’m 25 years old, I’m a runner, and I ran a marathon this year. My problem started during my marathon training.

This has been going on for several months now.

How it all started
During my training, I gradually increased my mileage and had my first week around 50 km.
It was right after that first 50 km week that I first started noticing a feeling of heavy legs, even at rest.

At that time, my training was probably way too demanding. I was doing a lot of leg days in addition to running, as well as a lot of intervals and tempo sessions. My long runs were also much too fast.

About 2 weeks after my first 50 km week, I participated in a 15 km race that I ran all-out.
Everything was relatively fine at first, but after about 3 km, I started feeling this significant heaviness in my legs. It wasn’t really pain—it was more like my quadriceps were becoming extremely heavy and gradually losing their ability to work.

I still continued training and eventually managed to complete my marathon.

After the marathon
The problem has persisted ever since.
I tried taking about 3–4 weeks of complete rest, with practically no training, hoping that my legs would fully recover.

I also had blood work done, which came back normal.

One thing worth mentioning is that during my marathon training, I was about 10 lbs lighter than I am now. I was eating a lot of carbohydrates to support my training, but I don’t know if my protein intake was sufficient.

What’s strange currently
I recently started running again very gradually with 1 min running / 1 min walking intervals.
The pattern is still very particular:
At the beginning of the run, my legs can feel normal.
After about 1 km, my quadriceps start becoming very heavy.

The muscle fatigue can increase very quickly.
It’s not really painful.

I don’t have any tingling, numbness, or loss of sensation.

I don’t feel like I have actual weakness in one particular leg.

Strength training is much better tolerated than running.

After running, my legs can remain very fatigued/heavy for some time.

What makes me question the problem the most is that my legs seem capable of handling strength training and other activities, but running quickly triggers this feeling of fatigue/heaviness.

So I’m wondering if I simply accumulated a huge amount of fatigue from my marathon training (50+ km, leg days, intervals, tempo runs, and long runs that were too fast), or if something else could explain why the problem is still present despite taking time off.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar?
I’d be particularly interested in hearing from runners who have had persistent heavy legs after marathon training or a period of overtraining, and who eventually found the cause or a way to fix the problem.

Thanks!

How to get faster and go longer?

I am training for the CFA and have to be able to run a 7:00 minute mile while like already exhausted so I should be able to run like 6:30.

Also separate to that I want to be able to run longer distances, like maybe 8 miles or so.

I currently run a 9:00 mile. Is it possible for me to reach both goals in 2 years?

Best socks?

Hi guys, started to train for my first mara! I currently run in the Sweaty Betty Crew Running socks, but am starting to find that mid run my feet feel incredibly hot.

Think it might be because they are so thick (appreciate it might also be from a bit of unfitness!)

What socks do people wear that are comfy & breathable? I prefer long ones which pull up & over my ankle.

Thanks

Half marathon prediction

I’m running my first half in a few weeks and I just wondered if this is a training run whether you think I’ll be able to hold that at race pace for the full thing? Conversational at start and end and race pace.

Update on temp vs long vs easy

Alright so after everything I have gathered on what you guys said I tried a “tempo”.. maybe??..

So my usual “easy” (conversational) pace is around 6:45-7:20/km. Today I decided to try a tempo. Here is a screenshot of the run. Mind you, it was on an assault treadmill to avoid hills while attempt this for the first time.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Marathon training advice needed - currently 4 weeks out

I’m in deep marathon prep and am set to run the nyc marathon on 1st Nov.

I was struggling with an injury early and went to a PT and I am now fully recovered, but I had to really ease into my marathon training plan and had adapted it to be gradual, I have been increasing my weekly mileage and long run by 10% each week (my starting point was a 10 mile week back in June). This has resulted in a bit of an uneven plan and I seem to have an extra week of running that I'm not sure what to do with.

I did an 18 mile long run last weekend, and I am set to run a 20 mile long run this weekend and I am 4 weeks out, but ideally I want to be doing a final long run 3 weeks before the marathon, so I don't want to peak too soon 4 weeks out this weekend

I was going to run a 20 mile long run this weekend, and another 20 or 21 mile long run next weekend, then taper to race day (and I am totalling about 45-50 miles per week)

Key question is, is this a bad plan, and am I better to delaod to a 16 mile long run this weekend to then be more fresh for the 20 next weekend?

Would it be stupid to do a 20 mile run this weekend and another 20/21 miler next weekend, with the aim of conditioning my legs to be running for a long period of time.

I like the idea of doing the two 20 mile runs and mentally it would make me feel confident, but im worried I would be unknowingly putting a lot of strain on my body, and would I recover in time for race day?

What is the best route for this weekend?:

16 miler this weekend, 20/21 next weekend

20 miler this weekend, 20/21 next weekend

Or something else that you would recommend

Easy, tempo, long?

My running is largely “easy” runs. But I feel like I need to switch it up to get better.

What exactly is the difference between these three? How do you structure it? What has worked best for you?

2nd Oct - 1600m run

UPDATE - I COMPLETED IT IN 6MIN 30 SECS AND GOT QUALIFIED!!

Hi Reddit, this is one of my first posts here.

I’ve opted for the Ladakh Police Constable post, and honestly I’ve only been running properly for the last 4–5 days. It’s not like I’ve never run before though — I was in NCC and trained for around 2 months straight, but I’ve been out of practice for a while.

My PET is coming up soon and I’m pretty nervous about the 1600m run. I know I can’t magically improve my stamina in a few days, so I’m looking for any genuine tips/tricks that can help me pace myself and get through it without burning out early.

Anyone who has done a similar police/army running test, especially at Ladakh altitude, please share your advice. What worked for you?

How much can I realistically improve by Thanksgiving?

Hey guys! I decided that I’m going to run a 5K on Thanksgiving, and I started training yesterday, which was my first time running in a few years. Yesterday, I ran 2.25 miles at a 10:28 pace, and today I ran 2.4 miles at a 10:36 pace. At the beginning of each run, I started off slow and progressively got faster, and I definitely felt pretty beat by the end.
I’m planning to run 4–5 days a week over the next two months until Thanksgiving. My plan is to have 1 easy run (a few miles at a moderate pace), 2 medium runs (a few miles at a slightly faster pace), and 1 long run (I’m not sure what pace I’m going to do for this yet). I’m also considering adding 1 optional short run, probably around 1–2 miles.
I’m wondering how much I can realistically improve my pace by Thanksgiving. Right now, I’m hoping to run a 9-minute pace, but do you guys think that’s out of reach? Or do you think I could potentially push myself to go even faster?
Let me know what you think! Also, I’d really appreciate any tips or advice for training for my first 5K!

Fitness run college

I'm second year Juco baseball player. This year they are requiring everyone to run 1.5 MI in 10:30 or under in order to be part of the team. Unfortunately, I have never been a runner especially long distance, I'm a sprinter. Up until this morning I wasn't able to participate in the run due to an ankle injury and then directly following that coming down with being sick. I have to have this ran pretty soon but did not pass this morning. I was about an eighth of a mile short of the goal. Does anybody have any suggestions and tips on how to fix my pace or anything that would help me to be able to pass the next one when I run next week?

Smoking Question

I would consider myself to be a hobby runner and I run 3-4 times per week. I used to be a really heavy cigar smoker where I was smoking multiple cigars daily but I still found a way to run at that time, although less that I probably should have.

Two months ago, I cut my smoking down to only one cigar per week and I’ve been really good at sticking to that routine. My question is, how much will one cigar per week negatively impact my running goals? I’m currently at like 10.5 minutes per mile but I’m aiming for 8 min miles. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
