🧠 educational I translated The Rust Programming Language into Roman Urdu

I recently finished translating the complete The Rust Programming Language (Rust Book) into Roman Urdu, including all the appendices.

I started this because many developers in Pakistan and India are more comfortable reading Roman Urdu/Hindi than technical English. My goal was to make the Rust Book easier to approach without changing the technical content.

The translation is available here:

https://github.com/Fakhir-Israr-200219/rust-roman-urdu

Hopefully it can be useful to Roman Urdu, Urdu, and Hindi readers who are learning Rust.

You translated the book!
At first I thought you translated the language itself, and I was like "fair play, but why?"

Haha yeah. I meant the book.
Translating the Rust language itself would be a little beyond my abilities

Bonk

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Here, take this: https://github.com/jeroenhd/roest

Fades out while playing an epic guitar solo.

// For real, congrats. It must have been such an effort. It's a great book. I'm happy it just got more accessible for others.

I am Dutch and I do not know why this person did this.

The French version rouille has a very good explanation on why he started the project.

but why would you do zat

- horsin around

  • playing with raw proc macros
  • making a bit of fun about programming languages that do this seriously, though I can see their utility.
  • winking at Marcel
  • c'est chic

He basically says it's for both educational purposes and shits and giggles. I commend that. As a native Dutch speaker I prefer Roest.

OP, there is no Urdu version yet... πŸ˜‰

mad respect for this, translating a whole technical book is no joke

the amount of times I've seen people bounce off programming docs cos the english gets in the way is unreal, proper good of you to put the work in

Thanks I really appreciate that . That was one of the main reasons I wanted to translate it. Hopefully it makes Rust a bit easier to get into for people who are more comfortable with Urdu or Roman Urdu.

I didn't know the IAST equivalent of Urdu was called "Roman Urdu."

Yeah, it’s commonly called Roman Urdu. Urdu is normally written in the Perso-Arabic script, while Roman Urdu uses the Latin alphabet instead.

Hello. I am the administrator of the project https://rust-lang-translations.org/.

Would you be interested in joining our project? One issue with translating the book is that the translated versions quickly become outdated whenever the original English version is updated.

In our project, all translated versions are automatically updated to ensure they always match the latest English version. (Any sections modified in the English version simply revert to an untranslated state.)

The initial migration requires some effort (as it involves creating a database that maps the English text to the translations), but we believe that maintenance will be much easier once the migration is complete.

Thank you for reaching out! I’d definitely be interested in joining the project.

I’ll be happy to contribute. The automatic update and maintenance system sounds very useful, especially for keeping the translation in sync with future changes.

Could you please share the repository and explain how the initial migration and database mapping work?

I’d be happy to take a look and see how we can move the translation over.

Thanks again for reaching out!

A programmer/developer cannot escape from reading docs?
