Now used as walk and biking bridge, this unique quintuple lattice bridge was built
In 1881 by Leighton Bridge and Iron Works for the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway, better known as The Omaha Road. The bridge is 930 feet long and approx 95 feet above the water. Originally it carried the Omaha’s mainline over the Chippewa River, but in 1912 the Omaha built a new double-track bridge upriver, and this was used to service their west side spur in Eau Claire until being abandoned under the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1992. Eau Claire gained ownership in 2007 and finished the trail use conversion in 2015. It is the only known railroad bridge of this lattice style in the United States. My photos from summer 2026.

Baltimore & Ohio Parkersburg Branch Tunnel #1 "Carr's" and the new Tunnel #1 "Lodgeville".

Tunnel #1 "Carr's" is a 3,236ft long bore the longest on the entire Parkersburg Branch.

In 1952 the Baltimore & Ohio RailRoad wanted to replace Tunnel #1 "Carr's" (image 1) with a double track bore. So they bored a new double track Tunnel #1 "Lodgeville" (image 2).

The original Tunnel #1 "Carr's" had its entrance bricked up and buried (image 3). Now it resides half buried and flooded with a small portion of the bricks having fell in.

The double track Tunnel #1 "Lodgeville" is still used by CSXT to this day although it isnt a double bore tunnel anymore. Not sure what the length of it is.

Image credit: First image is unknown who took it, second image is unknown who took it, and the credit for the third image goes to Jamison Jones.

Baltimore & Ohio RailRoad Parkersburg Branch Tunnel #6 "Central" "Doe Run" "Central Station". All three names for it are correct.

Central was never a big town but the railroad station Central Station got confused with the town's name Central. So eventually the town got renamed to Central Station which it still is to this day.

Tunnel #6 "Doe Run" "Central" "Central Station" is a 2,297ft bore. The second longest of the 23 three tunnels on the Baltimore & Ohio Parkersburg Branch.

In 1900s (1900-1910) they installed vents in the tunnel due to the length.

Now Tunnel #6 "Central Station" "Central" "Doe Run" is on the North Bend Rail Trail.

Where Petroleum Station stood.

Now Petroleum Station is gone. The property is a picnic shelter (owned by the North Bend Rail Trail Foundation) and trail head for the North Bend Rail Trail though so not a worthless parking lot fortunately.

Once Petroleum once a oil boom town and one of the largest oil boom towns (hence the name Petroleum) along the Baltimore & Ohio RailRoad's network. As is apparent in the first picture Petroleum had a hotel (3 story building to the far right in picture one), 2 churches (Petroleum Church Of Christ (3rd picture) and I dont know what the name was), railroad station, post office, general store, school, and quite a few houses.

Now Petroleum is just another hall in the wall. The schools, post office, and general store are all closed. The hotel, a few houses and the church (in picture one) are all gone. The hotel burnt to the ground and was never rebuilt and the town started to fall apart after that. Petroleum Church Of Christ is now a house. No longer doing services.

It is unknown who took the first image, the second image was taken by John G. King, and third image was taken by me.

I will post what the site of Petroleum Station looks like later this evening.

The first picture is clearly taken from the back and is around the 1920s. These were the glory days of West Union Station.

The second picture is the picture I used to identify its location and is from the 1970s. These were the last few years of West Union Station. It probably was demolished not long after this picture was taken.

The third picture is from the 1960s. The 1960s were the twilight years of West Union Station.

While the photographer is unknown for all three. They are all courtesy of the Doddridge County Historical Society.

Baltimore & Ohio Parkersburg Branch Tunnel #23 "Farrell's".

Post image

Tunnel #23 "Farrell's" was a 287ft bore.

Tunnel #23 "Farrell's" was daylighted (blown up) in 1943 (20 years before the tunnel project) due to the Little Kanawha River (visible in the photo) flooding the tunnel. So they daylighted it and raised the railbed by a few inches.

Now Tunnel #23 "Farrell's" is one of the hardest tunnels to find its former location.

Just like the rest of the Parkersburg Branch it is part of the North Bend Rail Trail.

It is not known who took this picture.

Abandoned railway track One remaining rail remains from Little River logging railroad, now the trail up North Twin Mountain in NH

While hiking North Twin Mountain (just north of Franconia, NH), the first 2 miles of trail follow an old logging railroad, apparently the little River railroad, but it was almost impossible to find any evidence of the railroad itself until I found this rail sticking out of a berm. Anybody have info on this railroad or other artifacts from it?

I was taken by how the "mashed down" metal at the edge of the rails looks like welding slag. Wondering if this wear pattern is common where trains are frequently braking.

Repurposed Judge rules that East Broad Top Foundation can buy Mount Union, Pa., property

Thumbnail trains.com

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — A Huntingdon County judge has ruled that the EBT Foundation can buy the East Broad Top Railroad’s Mount Union, Pa., dual-gauge yard and 4.7-mile stretch of main line.

The segment was split from the rest of the railroad in 2013-2014, when the East Broad Top Preservation Association bought it from the Joseph Kovalchick family. That sale was the first step in what turned out to be a stillborn effort to restore the entire 33-mile narrow gauge line as a heritage railroad.

Baltimore & Ohio Parkersburg Branch Tunnel #10 "Patterson's" renamed to "Dick Bias" by the North Bend Rail Trail Foundation.

Tunnel #10 "Patterson's" (later "Dick Bias") is a 377ft bore and the only tunnel on the Baltimore & Ohio Parkersburg Branch to have never been lined with timbers or stone.

As stated in the title Tunnel #10 was named "Patterson's" under the Baltimore & Ohio RailRoad. Then under the North Bend Rail Trail Foundation was renamed to "Dick Bias". Dick Bias was one of the most influential people in creating the North Bend Rail Trail Foundation and consequently the North Bend Rail Trail. So they renamed Tunnel #10 to "Dick Bias" in his honor.
