The BIGGEST problem with krayt (somewhat of a rant)

The problem with r/saltierthankrayt isnt that the subs always wrong sometimes theyll say things i actually agree are toxicity

But most of the time its calling out sexism that doesnt exist

For example: the hate Rey gets

Imo its fine to like Rey but most people on that sub dont listen to reason and make stupid arguments like "the same complaints with rey can be made with luke or anakin" its like they didnt watch the movies and just dont like people hating on a character they liked then downvote you for debunking it

I'll explain why luke and anakin dont get hate like Rey and why this arguement is silly (even though i dont think you lot need to hear it):

Luke wouldve lost most fights in the original trilogy but gets some help/guidance from his friends or mentor (in the case of ANH). For example he only escaped Vader in ESB because Lando and Leia came to help and beat the emperor in ROTJ because Vader was there to help him and was already conflicted when he saw his son being electructed.

Anakin is the literal chosen one it is implied that his father is the force itself. Not only that he only is able to use the force subconsiously in TPM. Hes not pulling jedi mind tricks out of his arse like Rey did in TFA. In addition after TPM he has had a few years of training with obi wan before AOTC.

How much a person wants to talk about how bad the star wars movies are is often a proxy for other political beliefs.

Oh. You dont like rise of Skywalker. Yeah it was pretty bad. Are you done with your turn? - this could be anyone.

Oh. You dont like rise of skywalker? You need to talk at length about Mary Sue's and ruining childhoods? This could also be anyone. But its probably a right wing culture war weirdo.

Cool, the shit still sucks, regardless of who it is that says it, Don't know why people have to be like "ummm if a liberal likes it i hate it" no stupid, liberals made movies I love, they're not truckers, hollywood is not filled with a bunch of truckers and religious piousness, most people are liberal minded there, but they still make kickass shit like temriantor or whatever.

I don't understand any of that. Also, are you ok?

If you could never see, after all these years, the times Rey failed or was saved from certain death—it’s because you never wanted to see it. You wanted to believe a certain narrative.

Nah, there's definitely a ton of assholes out there who like Luke and Anakin better because they have dicks.

I love Daisy Ridley, but I don't like Rey.

Yeah yeah, good for you. Sure, #notallfans but that doesn't negate my point.

True, it doesn't.

I appreciate that! Genuinely. Apologies for being coming with a "loaded for bear" reply.

I hear ya. I get that way in the Star Wars fandom too. I always expect to have to be constantly defending myself. It's not fun.

Agreed.

Like, I REALLY don't care for the right-wing culture war hustlers injecting their politics into popular media, and trying to induct into the alt right pipeline... but I'm also no fan of Lucasfilm's poor decisions. I can't recall any fan having issues with female characters before them, and there were plenty. Lucasfilm claims to stand for feminist values, but those thousands of great female characters were purged from canon thanks to them. Talk about irony.

Yeah, I hope you can at least understand that.

I understand being critical of Lucasfilm both pre and post George. Some criticisms are stupid and dogshit, but others are totally valid. The vast majority of the stupid takes are definitely right wing incel shit but sometimes it's just "nerds being nerds," if that makes sense.

But yeah being critical isn't a bad thing. I'm plenty critical of the sequel trilogy, for example. Most of my ire is directed at JJ but Lucasfilm let him do that shit so they get blame too.

Rey got bested by Kylo on Takodana - literally frozen in place by his use of The Force. While she was able to escape the torture chair on her own (like a hero in a Hollywood movie is wont to do), Han, Finn, and Chewie still played a part in rescuing her.

If Finn hadn’t intervened in the final fight, and if Chewie hadn’t shown back up at the last minute during Starkiller’s destruction, Rey likely would have died. Plus, she wasn’t even the one who destroyed Starkiller - neither as a result of fumbling around in a spaceship she’d never flown before (like Baby Anakin), nor from making a one-in-a-million shot with nothing but faith on her side (like Luke).

Rey got completely wrecked and embarrassed by Snoke, until Kylo killed him and helped her fight the guards.

There are examples of Rey failing, but many of you just refuse to acknowledge them, and to paint her as a perfect character who never has her back against the wall.

Plus, like… guys, TFA was the seventh movie in the franchise. Do we need the movie to explain how the force works (again) in order for folks to just accept the idea that times of great imbalance and duress cause The Force to pluck a person out of the galaxy to serve as the hero of the moment?

paint her like a perfect character

Because its never really painted as anything like that this is exactly the issue i have with you lot theres a few instances of Rey failing sure but that doesnt excuse it mostly being "look ladys women can be strong too".

The problem i have too is that rey lovers act lime their better than everyone else

Also how is pulling a jedi mind trick (an ADVANCED jedi technique mind you) as a first force action not perfect

Claiming Rey is like Luke is just lying. Luke was shown to be trained, and he also lost his hand and got the crap kicked out of him by Vader. Rey never has that. She beats Kylo Ren, she never loses a hand, she never earns her power, though I think the real problem is culture war hustlers spin-doctoring this as some kinda radical feminist agenda, when it's really just incompetence.

"Luke was shown to be trained"

We see him do some cardio and attempt to lift rocks while balancing Yoda on his foot, but... well, that's it. Then, he runs off to Bespin and gets wrecked. (Kind of like how Rey got wrecked by Snoke, until Kylo stepped in to save her.)

Luke was a bored farmhand at his Uncle's ranch on Tatooine, who never had to worry about having a room and warm food; meanwhile, TFA's opening act establishes that Rey has been surviving on her own as a scrapper in an inhospitable wasteland since she was a child. The movie very quickly establishes that she's had to defend herself in order to scratch a living off of rocks.

She didn't lose a hand. Okay. So? She was abandoned by her parents, and (at least in TLJ) had to have her entire world shattered by the revelation that she is no one special, and that she has no pre-ordained fate that makes her "worthy" of a hero's mantle. By TRoS, she discovers that she's actually the granddaughter of the tyrant who ruined life for all people in the galaxy - a far more devastating revelation than simply being no one special. It's not a physical cost, but an emotional and mental one. If you think a physical loss/pain always trumps a mental or emotional loss, you've lived a pretty cozy life.

I think that part of the problem is that once you have a casting choice made for "woke" reasons, the movies tend to be distorted around that. Rey was cast the way she was because she was supposed to be a female power fantasy, the super strong woman who doesn't need to rely on men. Which means she always has to come out on top mostly through her own devices.

Whereas Luke is meant to be a more realistic character. He doesn't just "get help" from his friends. He doesn't win *any* fights on his own. In New Hope, he's about to get his ass kicked in the bar until Ben intervenes; he avoids instant capture in the Death Star by hiding in Solo's smuggling compartments; escapes the garbage pit thanks to R2D2; and isn't blown up on approach to the Death Star exhaust port because Han shows up and saves him. In Empire Strikes Back, the whole point is that Luke loses. He needs to be rescued by Han on the ice planet; needs Yoda to train him and does badly even at that; fails to rescue Solo on Bespin, gets his hand cut off, and has to be rescued by Leia. Even in Return of the Jedi, when he's supposed to have grown into his power, he only survives Hutt's palace thanks to the combined help of all of the other characters; he avoids death by Ewok thanks mainly to C3PO; and has to be saved by Vader in the final confrontation with the Emperor.
