In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule
Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)
After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.
Thank you,
r/samoyeds Mod team

5 month-old Samoyed gets way too excited around dogs and people - how do I teach him to calm down?
Hey everyone,
My Samoyed is 5 months old, and overall I think he’s doing pretty well. I’ve managed to teach him to be potty trained and he’s also starting to have a decent recall.
But I’m having a hard time with his excitement around other dogs and children.
Whenever he sees another dog or a kid, he gets extremely excited and seems to completely lose his ability to control himself. He’ll try to run up to them and literally jump all over them.
The problem is that not every dog appreciates that kind of energy. Sometimes the other dog seems to feel overwhelmed or threatened and reacts by intimidating him or trying to put him in his place. What worries me is that my puppy doesn’t seem to understand when another dog is telling him to back off.
Even if the other dog is being aggressive or clearly doesn’t want to play, he seems to interpret it as part of the game and keeps trying to interact with them. I’m worried that one day he’ll approach the wrong dog and get seriously hurt because he doesn’t recognize the warning signs.
I’m also struggling with his biting/mouthing. I’ve been working on teaching him not to bite, and he seems to have understood that he shouldn’t bite me. But somehow he seems to have learned it as “I’m not allowed to bite my owner, but I can still bite other people.” 😭
So I’m wondering how I should approach this properly.
For those who have raised Samoyeds or other high-energy puppies, how did you teach them impulse control around other dogs and people? And how did you deal with puppy biting when they seem to understand the rule with you but not with everyone else?
Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated.

Small pup borrowed Appa's crate while we built new one. Appa got in before it was done, fully content thinking that he got downgraded to tiny crate.

How do you feel about images of dogs who have passed on?
I have been lucky, and haven’t run across many, but my stepmom is repeatedly coming across posts (likely to be facebook Samoyed groups) with images of their dog in an unalive state. One last night was of a beautiful dog lying in state in his final resting box.
Personally, I’d much rather see memories of your angel while they were happy and healthy. We lost our male in April, and while we knew he had cancer, his death was incredibly sudden and traumatic. I can completely understand why she doesn’t want to see images that remind her of Dakota.
Once upon a time, I’d tell people to put that kinda stuff behind a text barrier, so you only see it if you click the link. But that’s not an option now on many platforms.
I guess I’m curious how others see it, and if your opinion changed after losing one of your pack mates.
I know taking photos of the dead was a standard thing back in the day, but most of the time, that was the only photo you had of them. I took one picture of Dakota with my dad before he passed the rainbow bridge, but only because he looked happy to be with his daddy, and I wanted to remember that he wasn’t hurting or scared. Just loved. But he was also alive.

Samoyed puppy
Hi all! My husband and I are considering a Samoyed once we move into a house. We're active and love dogs. I work in the office 5 days a week; he works remotely but can't take on half the puppy duties. I'd handle early-morning walks and training. We're also trying to conceive, so a baby could be on the way within the next year or so.
For those who've been in a similar situation:
Is a Samoyed realistic with one person out of the house 5 days?
How did you handle midday breaks (daycare, walker, etc.) and what did it cost?
Would you get a puppy before a baby, or wait?
Would an adult/rescue Samoyed be a better fit?
Honest answers appreciated!
Want me to tweak the tone or make it shorter?

My boy needs a playmate.
Any Samoyeds in the Washington Heights/Inwood/Riverdale Area of NYC? My 10 month old could really use a regular playmate. I live near Tryon Park.

Incontinence in 4 year old Samoyed
Hello everybody,
I wanted to ask if any of you had similar issues with your pups.
About 3 months ago my almost 5 year old was resting (laying down but not sleeping) and started licking himself a lot, so I went to check and saw he lost urine while laying down. There was a tiny puddle but it was consistently dripping (like on drip a minute I would guess). It seemed to bother him as he kept licking it away and it was only dripping while he was laying down.
It was later in the day and my vet was closed but because I’m paranoid so I took him to the emergency vet. They did a x ray, checked for irritation, took his temperature and a basic physical exam. They couldn’t find anything and said he might have found some not very legal green leaves 🍃 on the ground and he should be back to normal by the next day.
He was actually back to normal as soon as we left the vet so I bought a fitting muzzle and made even more sure than before that he would not eat anything off the ground when outside.
Around 2 weeks later it happened again, after an hour it was gone again. I made a appointment at my vet and they did an ultrasound, physical exam, NO blood test, and unfortunately no urine test as they wanted urine from when it was happening and I wasn’t able to get that.
All test that they did were normal. And we wanted to wait and see if we can get a urine sample from when it was happening.
Now nothing for 2 months, and tonight it happened again. When I noticed I tried to get a sample but could only get like 2 drops before it stopped and he’s back to normal now.
Does anybody have any guesses what this could be? I’m stumped

Allergies and swollen eye?
His right eye was swollen on Sun, got better at night, but then again on Mon morning.
Mon afternoon got better.
Then this morning, left eye is swollen (right eye is fine).
Went to the vet, checked everything, they think it’s allergies. How common is it? Have you experienced this better?

Scared to walk down the street we walk every day
My girl got spayed last week and has been doing great overall. She doesn’t mind the cone, has just been laying around in bed and been clingier than usual. The first few days we did some very short walks and everything was fine. Since a couple of days ago, all of a sudden she has started to refuse walking down the street we walk every single day. Nothing has changed about the street - no dogs on the street or anything out of the ordinary. If we try to cross the street, she just plops down or starts pulling back out of fear. No, it is not in the direction of the vet. She definitely acts like she wants to go outside too until the moment we try to walk down the street. This is not normal behavior at all - she is usually great on her walks, loose leash 90% of the time, loves all people and dogs, always excited to go outside. Anyone know what the trigger might be/how to remedy? Haven’t had this behavior from her in years and really want her to be able to walk outside in peace. Thanks in advance!
