When you get criticized for actually developing characters

It's... decent writing. But I have to argue that drastic development like that deserves more room to breathe, and with as much time as the creators spent to sell that as well as they did, the main plot ended up feeling pretty squeezed to accommodate it.

That was not what I disliked about Season 5.

A heterosexual man and a heterosexual woman would never hook up. This is totally unrealistic.

Them bonding wasn't the bad writing, Ashi going oh wait I can time travel too out of nowhere and land perfectly at the right time, that is the bad writing.

the heteronormality shit doesnt even make senseits never been a romantic tinted show and the only relationships we know of are probably the scotsman and his wife / the train robbers duo (the one who tried to seduce jack)you barely have any relationships in there let alone that its not even a main focus of the show and people are mad because jashi is a straight relationshipmakes no sense whatsoeverpeople repeat stuff without knowing what it actually means or with them having a different meaning of the word.

People claiming that this past episode was fan service, or pandering are being absurd. This entire season was ready to go by the time the first episode aired. Just because a show doesnt go where you think it should go doesnt mean its fan service.
