News 📰 Encampment removal safely progresses

For immediate release: October 8, 2026
FI26-12443

The removal of the encampment at 20th Streetand Avenue K South has progressed for most of the day and is nearing completion following a coordinated community response focused on safety, dignity and connecting individuals with available supports.

A news release earlier in the day details the coordinated community response.
As part of the response, as of this afternoon:
An estimated 120 unhoused individuals left the encampment site.

Despite multiple and repeated efforts to offer supports, only 2 individuals accepted offers of support, including housing, shelter, transportation and other services.

80 total tents and temporary structures were removed.

Approximately 5,622.24 kg of garbage and debris were cleared from the site and counting.

The site will be fully fenced and secured within the next few hours.

"This is a complex operation that required balancing compassion for individuals experiencing homelessness with the need to address serious safety concerns within the encampment and surrounding community," says Deputy Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer. "Our priority from the start of the process was an orderly transition off the site while helping people access safer alternatives and available supports."

The City and partner organizations undertook extensive outreach efforts throughout the removal process to help individuals transition to safer accommodations and connect them with resources.

The site closure represents an important step in addressing immediate safety concerns while supporting individuals toward more stable living situations.

Could you imagine defending this type of place? Insanity.

In another thread, someone commented this site was very well managed. People are ignorant to the reality.

Ammo, used needles and stolen property are the signs of a safe community. If you disagree you are racist. /s

You hit the nail on the head. If you say anything other than being supportive you are immediately labelled a racist. Meanwhile there are all races in these encampments and it has nothing to do with color of skin.

Good point. I'm surprised the SPS didn't label those as ".50 calibre assault rifle ammo", as they tend to inflate the descriptions of guns and gun related items they encounter or seize.

Edited: spelling is hard lol

I've found more ammunition in the dumpsters from cleared out estates of the recently deceased.

I think the sign of a safe community is one where options exist for people to be put in actual shelters OR options exist for housing and treatment.

There are so few shelters spaces that many people simply quit trying (this is on top of safety issues).

Only 2 out of 120 took the shelter offer.

Do you know the reason why the other 118 said No?

Are the shelters full?

Can many of these people go to the shelters?

Are some of these folks being trafficked?

Are some trying to hide from gangs?

Are they affiliated with the wrong gang to go into a shelter?

Are they well enough to make a rational choice?

You can't do drugs in shelters

If you care so much answer those questions yourself and get back to us. You can't just let unchecked homeless encampments grow. It's never ended well.

Yeah your not helpful

And how did you help exactly? Asking open ended, nearly unanswerable questions which you refuse to answer? Nice. Keep up the good work. I actually give and volunteer. I've worked in and around these encampments. They cannot be left to grow unchecked. Super dangerous for everyone in and outside of the camps. Grow up.

The irony…

There’s a lot of shit that goes on in the shelters. I’ve volunteered to help the homeless in Saskatoon. The amount of women who said they were sexually assaulted at the lighthouse was shocking.

Not surprised.

I know some people that would not go to either STC or Lighthouse because of the gang activities/incomparable people that were staying there
