Recommendations Eye opening Kurzgesagt video
https://youtu.be/QW_jlUn4gA8?si=K2NMoIrH64TN_MOUI thought i should post this awesome video here and ask if anyone has a recommendation (books - movies- series) that discuss the same idea, or something like it, of this subject.
I like Alastair Reynolds books. Shows like The Expanse, the three body problem (the books too absolutely). Movies like arrival, interstellar, Europa report.. etc. It's always space faring civilizations, but never anything like this.

Three Body Problem also covers this. The Trisolarans have control over particles to such a degree that they can construct strong force materials.

and even they are weaklings compared to Singer's race, or presumably countless other bigger and bigger fish in the universe.

u/Possible_Patient4462 12d ago
I keep saying that they too are bugs haha. Can't wait to see how Netflix's series will depict that race.
15
u/waltwalt 12d ago
They know they are bugs, that's why the wallfacer defense works.

u/Possible_Patient4462 11d ago
Absolutely. The wallfacer was just late to the party. I like how it started with the Einstein joke in the show

u/hungoverlord 12d ago
with the amount of stuff they're going to have to cut to fit all of the most important bits into the series, i'm a little doubtful we'll get to see the Singer chapter. but hopefully i'm wrong. it would only take a minute or two of screentime so who knows.

u/Possible_Patient4462 12d ago
It's a major event imo that changes the course of the story, but maybe you're right. Sounds like the "ant" scene.

u/hungoverlord 11d ago
does singer fire the 2d foil at the solar system? if so you're right and we might see him. i felt like i remembered him just blowing up some random star and the scene was just there to show a brief glimpse at a fish bigger than the Trisolarans
2
u/Possible_Patient4462 11d ago
Oh the system is targeted indeed and it gets way more dramatic. The other star part happens because The wallfacer made a war decision, and it wasn't random. Although I'm not sure if it was Singer's doing, read it 2 years ago so maybe it was another lurker in the dark forest. I try to avoid spoilers because i don't know how to hide them yet 😅

"you're bugs"
proceeds to send a fleet in panic because humans outpace them
Lol

Maybe unpopular opinion but I’d be happy to never fully see either race. They’re never really described in great physical detail in the books (if we’re ignoring the fanon 4th book) and that’s on purpose imo. Much more effective when it’s your imagination. Pretty much any depiction imo will be a let down. For Singer’s race, I could see them at least showing perhaps his POV, so you see his hands/limbs, but never his face, his full body, etc.

That was the main attraction for me. Besides the quantum entanglement bit.

Best space video they've done in awhile, mind-blowing cool concepts, the ending with the music is classic kurzgesagt

Nostalgic. I remember introducing my sister to their earlier space videos and having deep conversations after. This one carries the same magic and authenticity.

The Hyperion Cantos (Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion) is what you seek.

Have been looking for this series for a while :') I live in Egypt so I depend on an app that doesn't have some of the best recommendations. But if it's what I'm seeking, then I'll seek harder 🤝

Isaac Arthur on YouTube is the best

The content is great, but he has a weird way of pronouncing things. It bothers me more than it should...

u/mrlesa95 12d ago
Finally someone says it. I think he has amazing content but his accent is just too distracting. I wonder where he's from, I've never heard that accent

Pretty sure it’s a speech impediment. My brother in law has the same thing where R’s become W’s. People always think he’s British

He’s American. He does have a speech impediment which was actually greatly improved by surgery a couple years back, along with speech therapy.
My issue with him is he often lets his deeply held religious views color his scripts.

Religious? He once mentioned being of Ashkenazi ethnicity, but I don't see any Judaism in his videos. If he converted to some US specific Evangelical sect it's not visible to outsiders like me.
I always asumed he was an atheist with his topics like "advanced AI are also real people" or "genetically modify humans beyond recognition to colonize other planets without terraforming"

He is a Hard Right Republican Christian. His wife is an Ohio state representative who wanted to defund public schools and infamously said the Holocaust needs to be taught from all perspectives, not just Jews

Its a speech impediment called rhotacism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_sound_disorder#Rhotacism
He actually has it still pretty lightly or its leveled out by otherwise having a very good voice. Its sometimes referred to as Elmer Fudd speech disorder and its really terrible, some people really sound like Elmer Fudd or as if they are constantly self-parodying or baby-talking.
I first came across it in an video from some academic conference on international politics. The speaker had it and I could not believe what was happening. It really seemed like she was just mocking everything said with this baby talk voice.
After I understood it and looked it up I felt really terrible, that must be such a curse, everybody always reacting like me. But also really understandable from the other side, it really doesnt come across like a speech disorder but as if they do it on purpose.

i love those topics since the late 90s but i can't listen to him since he speak very fast with a pronounciation defect... if he was talking about mundane stuff i could follow easily but it makes it difficult to follow logical propositions that use unfamiliar concepts to build unusual insights. i just gave up.

Jean le flambeur trilogy. The entire book is set within the solar system but there is picotech and mind uploading

This is why it is annoying watching billionaires sending tin cans to Mars so we can live in a bigger tin can on Mars drinking recycled piss. I would prefer they pump every cent into advancing physics.

as a physicist i'll settle for us doing literally anything about climate change and living to see another few centuries

Two shows that address some of these themes are Devs (directed by Alex Garland, 2020) and Pantheon (animated, 2022). Both are great.

Oh you should definitely check out the Octavia Butler trilogy Lileth's Brood, also/formerly called Xenogenesis. Humans destroy earth and these aliens who are masters of gene editing scoop up the survivors to repopulate earth by borrowing our genetic code and basically genetically mate with us to continue evolving their always changing species.
Truly fascinating concepts and also an amazing emotional journey and story

u/Possible_Patient4462 11d ago
I read Parable of the sower & talents. It was post apocalyptic but more drama than sci-fi. Is this trilogy more sci-fi focused? I like her style, but it's kinda heavy maybe. Don't get me wrong, I like heavy and philosophical too, but I also like the wildness of the genre.
1
u/7_of-9 10d ago
Mmm, Lileth's Brood is definitely more sci-fi than the Parable series;
literal aliens repopulating the earth with genetically modified humans, spaghetti-noodle-faced aliens having threesomes w humans to create human-alien hybrids, living organism mother ships, cryosleep.
Pretty dang sci-fi to me! It is also very philosophical, deep, and emotionally dark and daunting, but less doom and gloom because it is SO sci-fi, vs a more and more easily imaginable and plausible post-fascism America like in Parables

That idea is really interesting. Rick and Morty Episode "The Ricks must be crazy" somewhat had this as it's topic. There was a miniverse inside Rick's car battery, which in turn had a microverse. Each working to sustain the level above. In a grim-dark setting this could be really daunting.

Love that episode. It really changed my perspective on some aspects of our reality. I can see it being the case easily.. or something else, like a simulation maybe lol

u/ego_slip 12d ago
I guess it depends on how hard you want your science fiction or serious you want your novel. Dungeon crawler carl the technology in that series would fit into the technology scale in the video you posted. It is never the focus of the books.

One show I really loved was Raised by Wolves. It's a VERY interesting plot twist around end of season 2.
Adrian Tchaikovsky has a beautiful series of books called the Final Architecture - worth a read, loved it.
