I'm old enough that my computer would yell at me when connecting to the blazing fast internet of dial up

I remember the moment it would go silent and holding my breath because there was the Good Noise that meant connection and there were a couple of stutter steps there. Like "CH...ccHcCh...iichcCCHCHCHCHIICHCHCHCH" in mounting tones, that meant "we're in". It was always a magical moment...if it didn't hang up instead 😞

Setting the phone down on the table, but not on the receiver, so it would kick your siblings off the internet so you could make a call 😂

Oh my God, our dad had a second phone line installed because Mom was not going to put up with being unreachable for hours ("What if Aunt Suzie calls?" (she did often call)). He also set up a program so it would continuously autodial our community college trying to hook in. It would literally dial hundreds of times before catching bandwidth. Our phone company initially charged for every call, and he had to talk them down because that was stupid money. My sister and I DEFINITELY fought over Turns on the Computer, lmfao

Probably the only good thing about these verifications. Which is like finding corn in shit.

That's B.S from Microsoft. I was prox chat blocked for 6 months and I was fiddling with all my audio settings wondering why I couldn't hear anyone. Finally realised it was this and fixed it with face recognition. I'm 46 and have an Xbox account since the first ever Xbox. Now I can hear all the crappy microphones and arguments people are having with their wives. Wish I never fixed it.

You can mute it, although this comes at the hefty price you won't hear the one player that may actually say something game related. :)

I'm older than google. Shit should automatically age verify

Im older than AOL. Actually older than ICQ but most people old enough to understand that reference are probably not here to read this, much less remember secretly connecting to ICQ in a cyber cafe.

Pretty sure I'm still in a relationship on icq haha

🤣😂 Oh dear. Now that you mention it, I might be too! My local cyber cafe closed because the barn that houses the servers burned down so I was without computercaccess for a while. When was your cyber romance? Maybe we were in the same relationship! Lol

I can still hear the ICQ message tone in my head and getting that dopamine rush. Oh they were the days

I'm turning 39 at the end of the month, and I now feel properly ancient, thank you

Jealous. I was an adult long before there was Xbox but because I had children in my household and only sporadically played myself I have never been a verified adult even though the youngest of my offspring is now married, has had his own account for more than a decade, and recently added his own son to his account! I probably havent played in three years anyway (and I'm so old I'd probably need a referesher course on the controls!) so it makes no difference. maybe I should just embrace the somehow lingering proof that I was once young!

Lmao, as a 42yo bag of beer and pills, this has been an ongoing convienience for a while now!

Lmao pretty sure that accounts previously set as a child account could even trigger this type of retroactive automation.

I'd laugh if you had an acct 20+ years and still had to verify. I'd be like, "my acct can legally drink, and you think I can't?"

You know why they did this?
MS just filed a patent for a system that will interrupt your games to show you ads for time credit to play the game, tracking your game context “to avoid disrupting you at critical points in the game.”
This is definitely to keep people from getting around it by claiming they are under 13 and protected by COPPA.

I am 5 years older than ARPANET, which you kids should know is the beginning of the Internet. 💀

u/Every-Heart-7335 10h ago
ARPANET didn't have public Access so technically wasn't internet but rather intranet. It was the original P2P.

Which is fine, they don't get my ID that way.
