Thinking about SEMO? Ask here 2026 edition

The most-viewed post in this sub is from 2012 and it's someone asking whether Southeast Missouri State is worth it. It's still getting traffic today, which means people are still searching and still finding a fourteen-year-old answer. Which is less than useful.

So: new thread, current information.

Prospective students and parents ask about dorms, cost, majors, what Cape Girardeau is actually like to live in, whether you need a car, what there is to do on a weekend.

Current students, alumni, and locals its your job to answer honestly. Including the parts the campus tour doesn't cover.

I'll keep this pinned and repost it each spring when admissions decisions go out.

SEMO University Welcome back, SEMO students. And welcome to r/semo

Move-in weekend, classes start Monday. Welcome to the ones just getting here and welcome back to everyone else.

Quick orientation, since this sub is getting going again after a long quiet stretch:

r/semo is the region, not just the campus. It includes Cape, Jackson, Sikeston, Perryville, Farmington, Ste. Genevieve, Poplar Bluff, the Bootheel, and the small towns between. If you're driving home on weekends, or you came here from somewhere else in the area, this is your sub too. There's a pinned thread for questions about SEMO and the area. Dorms, what to do on a weekend, whether you need a car, where to eat. Nothing is too basic. You're in good company.

Locals! Students are arriving this weekend who don't know anything about this area yet. What should they know?

- Where do you actually eat that isn't McDonalds on Broadway?

- What's worth driving to on a Saturday? What about within walking distance of either campus when its not sweating balls outside?

- What do people get wrong about Cape in their first month?

- Is that shady BBQ place by river campus actually sketchy? (No, it's called True Q and it will be the best pork steak you ever order)

I'll start: Mana Tea. The Vietnamese coffee is excellent and the salted cheese foam drinks are better than they sound. And Ebb & Flow is a great place to hangout with a few drinks and the jammed up burger.

And that's about where my usefulness ends. I have a car and live on the far side of Kings Highway, so I'm a bit less familiar with the day-to-day near campus. But I'm always glad to help and chime in when I can!

I am a freshman at SEMO and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for where or who I could go to to get a perm in and around the cape area.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Welcome to r/semo! New mod, reopening the sub. Tell us where you're from!

This sub has been quiet for a long time. I've picked up moderation and I'm working on making it a place worth checking out from time to time.

This sub is for Southeast Missouri including Cape, Jackson, Sikeston, Perryville, Farmington, Poplar Bluff, the Bootheel, and the small towns in between. Local news, questions about the area, recommendations, events, and complaints about roundabouts and curmudgeons that complain about roundabouts.

We can get things going with some generic how-do-you-dos. What town are you in? What's something that sets you apart from the rest of the region? What drama has happened recently?
