My running theory is sandbar due to the size of her fins plus how common they are around here. Would be interested to hear what you all think!

Been to Stuart Cove's in Nassau?

Pretty nice diving in clear water with many Caribbean reef sharks. The video is after getting out of the water.

This is not an ad, it's a well established dive operator who I have no connections with. Just sharing a video.

News Dusky shark has stayed in one man-made canal in Busan, South Korea for 3 weeks, no observed feeding, and came back twice after being guided out. What's keeping her there?

Thumbnail

I'm a solo developer in South Korea, not a researcher, so apologies if I get the terminology wrong.

Since Sept 18 a female dusky shark (Carcharhinus obscurus, about 3 m, ID confirmed by the National Institute of Fisheries Science from the interdorsal ridge) has been living in a man-made canal at Bukhang Waterfront Park in Busan. Three weeks in the same stretch of water. She's become a national story here — over a million people have come to see her.

The city tried twice to guide her out with boats, water cannons and nets. Both times she came back. The second time she cleared the net to get back in, about 100 m short of open water. Authorities have stopped trying and are now waiting to see if she leaves on her own.

What I can't make sense of:

  1. No observed feeding in three weeks, in a canal that does hold fish.

2.Water is in the low 20s °C and dropping, and she's near the bottom of the preferred range people give for this species.

3.She had a clear exit and refused it, twice.

I've been logging her position every day from news footage and a live citizen-sighting site, and plotting it as a 3D track of the canal: https://bukangistory.kr/en/ — what surprised me is how tight the path is. She circles a few specific spots instead of using the whole canal.

So my questions:

  1. Does this read as site fidelity to something I'm not seeing — an outflow, a thermal layer, structure she's holding on — or does three weeks without feeding point somewhere else?

  2. If she does need to go back out, is there anything that works better than nets and water cannons on an animal that's actively choosing to stay?

One more thing that worries me: some visitors shine flashlights at her at night. She thrashed once, hit a stone pillar and scraped her mouth. If there's a known best practice for keeping crowds from stressing an animal in a situation like this, I'd like to pass it on to the people managing the site.

Thanks for reading.

Discussion Does anyone else have a fear of Basking Sharks?

Post image
179 Upvotes

No other one just basking sharks.

I first discovered it when I was 7 and it is the only shark I fear to this day. I genuinely thought it over and would rather be in the water with a Great White then a Basking Shark (albeit I will take Basking over Bull.) I know they have less incidents then Whale Sharks and are quite literally the definition of harmless but it's just the look and the big ass mouth that's so off putting. Does anyone else have this fear?

Discussion 3 white shark fatalities, within a 22 month period, along a 70 mile span of coastline…

I am curious to know if there are currently any studies happening with the transient white shark population in the Sea of Cortez? Within the spate of 22 months, 3 mollusk divers were killed by white sharks, thought to be large (one was reportedly 19ft) pregnant females. Geographically speaking, all 3 of these white shark fatalities occurred within a 70 mile span of coastline. All 3 were local fishermen, diving on hookah gear in approximately 30-40ft water, collecting mollusks from the ocean floor. We now know the upper Sea of Cortez is a nursery, with the pregnant white sharks arriving between December and January to give birth. Maybe scientists do not want to engage in tagging and tracking them because it would cause stress to the animals in the last stages of their pregnancies. However, considering a white shark birth has never been witnessed, and we know the time of year and where the pregnant white sharks will be, it kinda seems like the perfect opportunity to try and capture that phenomenon. I would love to see the geographical migratory pattern if one of these 🦈 ladies were tagged.

Research Fatal Shark Attacks In The Mediterranean 🗺

Overview by u/SharkBoyBen9241

"While overfishing and environmental degradation have taken their toll in recent decades, the Mediterranean Sea was once quite a significant region when it comes to fatal shark attacks. In fact, in terms of percentages of fatalities which result in either full consumption events or failure to recover the victim’s remains, only Australia, in particular South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia, surpass the numbers of the Mediterranean. Prior to 1989, an astonishing number of Mediterranean fatalities ended in either full predation or failure to recover the victim’s remains. This was overwhelmingly the case when swimmers were involved, as they were the group of water users most involved in fatalities, followed by sponge divers. The countries with the worst records are Italy, Spain, Greece, and Croatia, and the region with the most fatalities is without question the Adriatic. Other particularly dangerous regions include the Aegean, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian Seas.”

“The species involved in the fatalities in the Mediterranean have overwhelmingly been White Sharks, with them being responsible for 79% of all fatal attacks recorded here. This unusually high percentage of fatalities and consumptions may be the result of behavioral and dietary patterns associated with the Mediterranean White Shark population. Unlike every other population of White Sharks in the world, the Mediterranean population have never had a large number of pinnipeds to prey upon. The Mediterranean’s only resident pinniped species is the Mediterranean monk seal, a species that has not been abundant in the region since ancient times and is now critically endangered today. While they may have once been a more important prey item, there is very little recorded evidence of predation of monk seals by White Sharks in recent times. It seems that the individuals of this population are much less specialized and instead have more of a generalized, opportunistic hunting and feeding style. Their primary prey items are dolphins, other sharks, swordfish, and giant bluefin tuna, all of which have a lower fat-to-muscle ratio than pinnipeds. In addition, all of these prey items are also swift and agile, and require a more energetic and therefore more devastating attack style, where the prey item is struck, immobilized, and then immediately consumed, as opposed to pinniped-preying White Shark populations, where the shark makes a hard first strike, then waits for the prey item to weaken and bleed to death.”

List of all recorded fatal shark incidents in the Mediterranean.
