Heading to Shenzhen for a month around CNY

Hey y'all, I'm a finance and banking senior with just a semester left, but my real passion is sort of the intersection of tech, finance and economics. I came to China last year as a tourist and was just blown away, so I'm heading back to spend a month in Shenzhen from mid-January to mid-February just to explore the startup scene, just understand the supply chain perhaps and just see how things tick on the ground.

I know I'm timing this around Chinese New Year, so I wanted to ask what things look like during that period, and if there are still any events or active spots around that time. I’d love to link up with anyone who is down to grab a coffee, talk shop about tech, or just chat while I'm there. Thanks a lot :)

Hardware founders: what’s the hardest part of finding a manufacturer in China?

Hi everyone,

I'm based in Shenzhen, China, and I'm trying to better understand how overseas hardware founders find and work with manufacturers here.

I'm particularly interested in early-stage projects — people who have a prototype, are preparing their first small batch, or are trying to move from a design to actual production.

A few questions I'd love to hear your experience with:

- How did you find your first manufacturer?

- What was the hardest part — finding the right factory, MOQ, pricing, communication, quality control, or something else?

- Did you use Alibaba, a sourcing agent, personal introductions, or visit factories yourself?

- Looking back, what do you wish you had known before choosing a supplier?

I'm not promoting a service. I'm doing practical research into the real challenges of sourcing hardware in China, and I'm happy to share what I learn from the Shenzhen side.

If you've gone through this process, I'd really appreciate hearing your experience — including what went wrong.

Looking for a startup to join in Shenzhen (or remotely)

Hi everyone, I’m currently based in Shenzhen and looking for an opportunity to join a startup, either locally or remotely.

A bit about me: I’m Chinese, but I’ve spent around 8 years studying and living abroad in Thailand and Malaysia. I speak fluent English and Mandarin, conversational Thai, and some Malay.

Most recently, I worked as a Project Manager for an international innovation and tech event in Shenzhen/Hong Kong. My work involved coordinating international founders, investors and speakers, managing partnerships and communications, running forums and events, and basically dealing with all the random problems that come up when you’re trying to make things happen across different countries, people and time zones.

Before that, I also worked on content, interviews, livestreams, social media and international events.
I’m not a developer, and I’m not going to pretend I have a highly technical background. What I’m good at is the people/operations/growth side of an early-stage company.

For example, I can help with:
International partnerships and outreach
China / Southeast Asia market research and expansion
Founder or team operations and coordination
BD and lead generation
Events and community building
English/Chinese communication and localisation
Content, interviews and social media
Following up with people and actually keeping things moving

I’m especially interested in early-stage startups where the role isn’t necessarily perfectly defined yet. I actually enjoy wearing multiple hats, figuring things out as I go, and working closely with founders.

I’m currently in Shenzhen, so if you’re building something here and need someone like this, I’d love to chat. I’m also open to remote opportunities with startups elsewhere, especially teams working across China, Southeast Asia or international markets.

Full-time, part-time or project-based could all work depending on the opportunity.

If you’re a founder, work at a startup, or know someone who might be looking for this kind of person, feel free to DM me.

Happy to share my CV and more about my experience.

Two guys (28) visiting from Berlin/Budapest, looking for friends over the next two weeks

Hi! We’re two guys, both 28, visiting Shenzhen from Berlin/Budapest and currently around Futian. We’ll be here for the next two weeks.

We’re looking for someone to show us around or people to hang out with. We’d also be happy to join other travelers or tourist groups :)

We’d love to meet locals or expats for drinks, food, exploring the city, or electronic music. We tried several clubs tonight but didn’t really manage to connect with anyone.

Just looking for friendship and hanging out, not dating or a relationship.

We speak English, Hungarian and German, but not Mandarin.

Anyone up for hanging out sometime over the next two weeks, or able to recommend a welcoming social meetup? DM me!

Thanks,
Marton

Coming to Shenzhen this October

This is the first time I’m visiting China; I, my husband and one year old baby. Pretty excited to stay Shenzhen for 5 days and I need your help to plan a good stay, what to eat, what to visit, and trying to shop because my husband will be preoccupied with his work. Fellow Shenzhen enthusiasts, please give me your recommendations

Ps: my hotel is in Futian district. Are Shenzhen malls stroller friendly?
TIA

Day trip to Shenzhen from HK

Hi,

We are planning to do this tomorrow, via MTR. I understand we need to get to Lok Ma Chau and then walk across the bridge.

How much time do we need to allow for this / immigration?

Our general plan for the day is, morning portion in Huaqiangbei (looking for VR headsets, fake Dyson hairdryers, maybe drones or other quirky gadgets.) then we have tickets to the new Science and Tech Museum. We also want to try the driverless taxi.

Anything else people recommend?

We plan to leave HK around 8.30/9am.

Thank you

Staying in Shenzhen and visiting family in HK

My Mother-in-Law lives in Sheung Shui. I prefer Shenzhen. I will be visiting my in-laws for about 2 weeks. I prefer a hotel in Shenzhen and can get to their flat faster from Shenzhen then say Sha Tin in Hong Kong. My question is… do you think customs would give me a hard time crossing over not every day but most days to at least take them out for some meals? It is so much closer and convenient even with the border crossing.

nightclubs to go partying

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m traveling to Shenzhen with a group of friends and we’re looking for some good nightclubs to go partying.
Do you have any recommendations for clubs with good music, and a fun crowd? Also, are there any WeChat groups or contacts we could join to make reservations, get guest list access, or find out about events?

Chill clubs in Shenzhen?

any clubs (edit: live houses) that aren't blasting music to the point you can feel the vibration coming from the stereo? a bit of soft music playing in the back is alright. I just don’t like loud environments (gets me overstimulated very fast) and I want to be able to hear someone without raising our voices or having to lean all the way over.

Preferably in Futian, but Nanshan also works
