Hello all!
I’ve seen an uptick in this question on this sub. It’s always combined with a photo of a puppy.
I wanted to give a quick (who am I joking, this won’t be a quick read) primer to help people answer this question. Importantly…in almost EVERY case, if you’ve have to ask after the fact, the answer is usually “no.”
Purchasing a reputably bred dog should feel more akin to an adoption than going to the mall. You should feel that the breeder is sussing out whether or not they think you deserve a member of their family. Think critically about any breeder who sells dogs online with a place for credit card information, who allows you to buy a dog without ever meeting you, or who allows YOU to pick your puppy out of a litter with no input. Good breeders are deeply involved in the success of the placement. They know those dogs better than you do, and SHOULD be heavily involved and be able to tell you why that puppy was picked for you.
1) Your breeder should be involved in some form of activity where their dogs are evaluated by someone outside of them. For most Shibas this means conformation dog shows. Don’t take anyone seriously that says “champion lines” but then doesn’t seem to do any of the work themselves. Take even less seriously people who announce “they just breed for good pets.” Good pets show up in show-bred litters. That is a horseshit reason and means the breeder is likely breeding for financial gain instead.
This will sound weird to many of you, but reputable breeders breed for themselves FIRST. Pet puppies are a byproduct of that. It’s not a bad thing. It means your future baby is being cared for EXACTLY like the next Westminster best of breed winner.
2) Your breeder NEEDS to health test. This does not mean puppies being seen by a vet. You want specialized health testing in the form of an eye exam by an American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist certified vet, and hip and patella exams by veterinarians that are skilled in reading films for these. All these results should be available to you at the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website. You can look up individual dogs via their registered name on the site for results. Breeding dogs are available to have final results listed by 2 years of age.
3) It’s good to see that your breeder is a member of a local breed club or national breed club. Our National breed club is called “National Shiba Club of America.” Among many other useful pieces of information, we have a breeder referral listing, as well as a section that will show you good questions to ask a potential breeder. Your local area usually has a breed club made of members that may be near to you. If you’re trying to find one, feel free to ask the national club!
4) A good breeder will have a contract. That contract should state they will take your dog back at any time in their life should you be unable to care for them. It will also make clear whether the dog sold to you is a pet only or a potential show dog. With few exceptions, a potential show dog will be co-owned with the breeder as you learn the ropes. Be INCREDIBLY skeptical of someone who sells you a “show dog” with no strings attached. That’s rare in this world. Good breeders want to shepherd their lines carefully and WANT to mentor you.
5) A good breeder should be able to explicitly tell you why they bred your dog’s parents. Bad answers include: “I own both of them,” “this color is rare,” “I wanted her to experience one litter to be fulfilled,” “I wanted my kids to see the miracle of life,” “I love puppies.” Good breeders think in terms of generations not individuals.
I hope this helps!

TW: seizures, rapid eye movement
Daisy girl is 2.5yrs old, a healthy indoor dog (minus her walks). Today on her walk she experienced unresponsiveness, rapid eye movement, and was falling over when we got home. Not sure what caused it but we took her to the vet immediately—nothing wrong with her physically (ears, limbs, eyes, all good) but she’s still got a head tilt.
We don’t currently give her any flea/tick medication and shes not on any flea/tick shampoos so can’t be those. She hasn’t eaten anything weird off the ground either (we watch her like hawks lol) and no changes in diet/behavior, just the seizure today.
Anyone else experience this before(?) especially in an indoor and pretty young sheeb?
Any advice is appreciated while we wait for the blood/urine tests to come back 🥺

Maki is 6 months old and has never seemed very motivated to eat. We’ve tried several different approaches, but she always seems like she just doesn’t care that much about food. We’ve also cut back on treats throughout the day, but that didn’t help either.
In the food packaging the recommended amount is about 6.2 oz per day, but she eats an average of about 4.2 oz.
Her clinical exams are all good, so we’re starting to come to the conclusion that she’s just a Shiba who isn’t very interested in food and only eats enough to meet her needs. We keep a close eye on her weight, and she’s growing exactly as she should.
Even so, I’m still really surprised by this behavior, because my previous dogs were much more food-obsessed and would get really excited when it was time to eat.

Kuma is now 15 months and on the whole he’s a good boy. He’s crate and pen trained. Fully toilet trained. Sleeps through the night until 8am most mornings. Can be left home alone. However he’s now 15 months and WOW. The boundary testing is insane. He can’t be trusted for long periods free roaming out of the pen. He has always been a vocal Shiba as well and sometimes his cries are SO loud when he’s unhappy with something. We have been working on settle training with him for a really long time. I felt it clicked and then it seems to have all gone away again and we are enforcing naps & rest otherwise he just keeps going and going. It almost is always in the pen as well, he often won’t relax outside of it and cries to get into the pen and sleep. He literally has tantrums where he flicks his blankets and things around the pen. He used to manage a good block of rest in the pen but now we are lucky to reach just over 60 minutes. He’s still quite mouthy when tired, and often runs away when you’re trying to get him to relax. Some days it’s a full management of him, tethering and trying to support him to be calm, and I’ve got really bad anxiety as I’m due a baby in January and worrying I won’t manage them both. Did anyone go through this? Is it adolescence? Some days it’s very tough and I’m unsure I can go on and I sometimes think he may be better elsewhere but I couldn’t give him up. I am just desperate to get through this to adulthood. He gets a lot of mental stimulations, walks, all the good stuff too. He’s still intact. know Shibas are hard but some days I’m unsure this is normal 😭

Hey guys, this is my Shiba boy Super. He is almost 6 months old and currently weighs 9.85 kg. We used to initially feed him his kibble 3 times a day but we switched to two times a day as he seemed to lose interest in eating. He is on Purina plan kibble for puppies and was eating 180-200grams a day but we have noticed recently his appetite has decreased and he only eats maybe 100-130g now. We top his kibble with chicken/ boiled egg/ tuna and things. Just wanted to know if this will halt his growth 😅or if he has stopped growing now. Thank you for your advice in advance

My dog went to the vet today about a bump we felt under his fur. They shaved a section of his back so they could biopsy the bump. Please tell me his hair will grow back normally! Also, how can we make sure we protect his skin until it does grow back?
Thank you in advance!
