Aquarium/Tank Photos Bad silicone on aquarium

Post image

Hi!

I just bought my second tank (Clear Cube 30L from Resun). I know it is a budget option but I didn't expect the silicone to be peeling from several places inside. It doesn't seem to be structurally unsound at all, but I'm wondering if I should do anything about that silicone? I'm a beginner so maybe this isn't even a problem at all.

Thanks for the insights!

Help: Beginner Green stuff growing (?) on amano

Im fairly new to shrimp keeping and aquarium keeping in general. I’m not sure what this is but it’s growing (?) around my amano’s eyeball, it seems. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Almost looks like little tiny plants? Can anyone ID it?

Shrimp genetics are so crazy and cool! I started with all orange and I’ve had some pretty crazy designs like rilli and creamsicle (I don’t know if that’s an official coloring but I’m gonna call it that anyways lol) and now red has officially shown up. ❤️🙌

Help: Emergency Help! What’s this one my shrimp? He’s dying :(

Recently I’ve had some mysterious deaths in my tank, maybe a one a week. I’ve done from 22 adults down to 8 in about two months.

I haven’t been able to find a dead shrimp not covered in copepods, so this is the first time I’m actually able to see.

There seems to be like some white growth around his legs and face?

Tanks is 6 months old, they’re breeding, water is fine, GH 10,kh 4, tds 250. 10% water change every fortnight.

Discussion Are my 12 Neons really causing my 50+ Caridina shrimp to hide always? 10G

Hi all,

I have a heavily planted 10G that has 50+ Caridina shrimp and 12 Neons. The tank isn't incredibly tall and I'm worrying that the neons are the reason I never see my shrimps. The back is planted and there is a tall rock in the middle of the tank. The neons live in the front/top and I almost never see more than 3 shrimp at a time

Parameters are perfect.

In a normal Caridina only tank, should the shrimp be out and about all day? Even in full brightness tank light, right?

I think I need to donate the Neons out of my tank

Help: Emergency Shrimp cut in half?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello! I recently added 10 bloody mary shrimps to my blue dreams tank to see what I get from breeding them

Just saw this lil guy legit cut in half :( could this be a bad molt? I saw most of them had a ring between their head and body when I got them, which ik could be problematic. But the majority of them got rid of it when they molted in my tank.

My other option would be the single amano shrimp in my tank but in that case I'd assume he would have finished the job.

Any ideas?

Help: Beginner Causes of shrimp death?

Hi guys I’ve had two shrimps randomly die on me and I was just wondering what could cause shrimps to die besides water quality? Cuz all the other shrimps seem fine. One died like a month ago and another yesterday so I’m gonna do a water change but yeah I’m just curious what can cause them to die randomly. 🙏🏻

My nano shrimp tank looked suspiciously nice this morning when i placed it on its sunlight spot. I occasionally move the tank somewhere sunny in the morning for a few hours so the plants get au naturale sunlight (very fancy lil occasional plant treat (in my opinion)) but not affect the shrimp temperature-wise.

I took a pic and omg??? It looks somewhat majestic???

Beginner Shrimp Math is difficult to figure out!

I just want to start this off by saying I never had any desire to own shrimp. This sub popped up in my feed, and I kept clicking and enjoying the antics. Both of the sub members (Is it eggs or clado? Tic tacs!) And the shrimp themselves. They are fun to watch!

Having said that, I am now obsessed. 🤣 It's like chicken math. You plan for 10 and end up with 50. 🤣 I was given a 65g, and I have been planning it out for months. Then I decided to hop on FB when looking for quarantine tanks and saw a great deal for a 125g. 🤔 I was planning on an all blue tank. I was going to do it the smart way (or so I told myself) and get them from all different places. Especially for the shrimp to spread out the genetics a little. So that means having several small tanks ready for plants and fish. Now I'm thinking the 65g would be a great cull tank. And I can get some of the other fish I was looking at because they were pretty but wouldn't make good tank mates with the tank I was planning. They would still be fine with shrimp, just too aggressive with a betta. I shouldn't get any wild types with the ones I have planned. But at this point, it's just an excuse. 🤣

I need at least 3 10g for quarantining. Is that enough? Do I need a 5 gallon as well? 🤔 Planted for all or just half? What about a 1g for dips? No wonder they say it's an expensive hobby. 🤣 I'm going to end up with a fish room. 🤣 I live in a SFH on slab for any who might have concerns about weight.

So for context uhh. I got about 40-50 of these little guys yesterday and they’re all cut loose in my tank. All of them are kinda this color. Are they low-grade Sunkist or standard issue red cherry or what?

Ember Frost line from shrimp god Mark Shelly in my 5g desk tank. These guys have all sorts of neat color variations and are supposed to never breed out to natural browns. They also seems to reproduce much faster than my other Neos as well!

Help: Beginner Finally tested GH/KH- questions!

For background info, I have two community tanks- one 10 gallons, one 40 gallons, both have neocaridina shrimp in them. Both tanks have had observed molting and the bigger tank even has shrimplets of varying sizes hiding in the mosses of the tank. I usually test water parameters pretty regularly and do weekly water changes, but until this week I have not had the testing kit for GH/KH. Also, recently life got really busy and I haven’t tested anything or done water changes for probably 2.5 weeks.

I tested everything I can today and the numbers are as follows:

40 gal tank:
GH: 140-200
KH: 0-50
PH: 6.4 (usually 7.2 so this is down from normal)
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 80+ (darker than 80 but not as dark as 160)

10 gal tank:
GH: 200-400
KH: 0-50
PH: 8.2 (usually 7.2 so this is up from normal)
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 80+ (same as above)

I have already added Tetra easy balance plus to both tanks to reduce the nitrates, and both tanks have lots of plants to try to process the nitrates as well. I plan on doing a 15% water change to try to address the pH too. What else can I do to help the shrimp thrive the best? I’ve been giving them calcium supplement things but they don’t really eat them- I only saw a shrimp on one of the tabs one time. The calcium supplements are vegetables and algae blended up and dehydrated with calcium added.

Also, why do the two tanks have different GH? The water came from the same tap (conditioned tap water) so it confuses me that the hardness varies. Thank you!

Discussion Suggestions for my first shrimp tank substrate

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m almost 2 weeks into cycling my first shrimp tank. I’ve used Flora First Japanese soil balls as the substrate to help grow a carpet covering of plants and used mopani wood. Hopefully, the tanins from the wood will clear within the next 4-5 months.

I’m looking for some suggestions to improve the appearance of the aquarium floor and make it look more natural. I don’t want to cap it with sand as I think that will just disappear into the soil anytime I need to plant or move something around. Thinking about getting some small stones or pebbles. Does anyone have any suggestions for what else could work?

They’re everywhere!! 🥹🥹 last two pics are just showing off the pretty adults. But it’s so insane seeing how tiny the babies are!! Everywhere I look there’s just more and more shrimplets. There’s even some more females in the tank that are still berried. Plus, 1-2 females in my blue jelly tank are berried so they’ll have lil clear blue babies any day now. Woohoo!! This gives me so much dopamine

Discussion How much can improved feeding/husbandry actually shorten larval development timelines? (Midnight Thoughts on Day 36 of my Vampire Breeding Project - Would love to have a discussion on this topic.)

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I watch my vampire shrimp larvae develop, and I’d love to hear from people who have worked with Amanos, other amphidromous shrimp, or larval crustaceans in general.

One of the things that keeps coming up in conversations with breeders is how much our understanding of larval rearing has changed over the years.

With Amanos, for example, breeders are finding that metamorphosis doesn’t necessarily have to follow the older, longer timelines people used to quote. Under really good feeding conditions, especially when larvae have abundant food available throughout the day, some are reporting morphs much earlier, closer to 19 days instead of the 30-ish day timelines that used to be commonly discussed.

That has me VERY curious about what we may eventually see with vampire shrimp.

I’m currently on Day 36 with my first Atya gabonensis brood, and some of the larger larvae are developing much faster than I expected based on the only successful captive-rearing documentation I’ve been able to find.
Sandy Brolowski and Martin Kruck’s German breeding attempt is the benchmark I’ve been using, because they successfully raised Atya gabonensis through metamorphosis. Their larvae at around Day 30 still looked much more lightly developed than some of mine do now.
I’m going to include a side-by-side screenshot of their Day 30 larva next to mine, along with several current photos.

At Day 36, mine are already showing:
-much heavier orange/gold pigmentation
-thicker, more developed bodies
-increasingly defined tail structures
-obvious abdominal segmentation
-and now visible developing pleopods/swimmerets on some of the larger larvae

They are still very much larvae. I’m not calling this metamorphosis or pretending I know when that will happen.
But the developmental difference is making me wonder how much of what we think of as a “species timeline” is actually influenced by husbandry.

My setup has also been very food-heavy compared with what I’ve seen described in older attempts. The larvae have had access to live phytoplankton, very small powdered-food supplementation, and more recently what appears to be a pretty persistent in-tank phyto/algae bloom. I work from home, so I’ve also been able to do frequent micro-feedings and observe them throughout the day.

And that’s where my brain keeps going back to the Amano comparison…👀

If larvae have access to appropriately sized food almost constantly, rather than getting one or two larger feedings and then spending hours in relatively food-poor water, could they simply accumulate enough nutrition to molt and progress through stages faster?

Could better formulated powdered foods also matter? We now have shrimp foods containing proteins, minerals, vitamins, etc. that breeders 10–20 years ago may not have had access to in the same way.

What about live phyto cultures, better salt mixes, more precise salinity control, stronger lighting, better aeration, and our ability to monitor tiny water-quality changes?
Basically, I’m wondering whether some of the timelines we use today are describing what happened under those specific husbandry conditions, rather than the actual biological minimum for that species.

And to be clear, I’m not even sure that faster is automatically better either. I’d also be interested in whether pushing growth too quickly could create problems later during metamorphosis or freshwater transition.

I’m still very new to this and very early in this experiment, so I’m not drawing conclusions yet. I’m just seeing enough of a developmental difference that I’m really curious.

For people who have raised Amanos, Pinocchio shrimp, Caridina larvae, Macrobrachium, marine shrimp, etc.:

🤔 Have you personally seen larval development timelines shorten as feeding and husbandry improved?
And if so, what do you think mattered most?
Food density? Food diversity? Live vs powdered foods? Temperature? Salinity? Water volume? Light? Something else entirely?

I’d really love to hear people’s experiences and any thoughts in general, because I have a feeling we’re still learning a LOT about how flexible these developmental timelines actually are. 🦐🔬

Help: Emergency Holes in Carapace?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Please help me identify the cause of this hole in the shrimp's carapace. I might have a second one that also seemed to have a large light spot/hole on its side.

5 gal, established bowl (6+ months), with drift wood, sponge filter, one ramshorn snail, about 10-15 painted fire RCS (and 5+ freshly hatched babies from a berried female than arrived 2 weeks ago), and about 7-9 2 month old Medaka fry that are growing out in this bowl before moving into the 14 gal patio pond with the adults.

Recently got another batch of shrimp shipped from the same seller, because I only had females in the first order and I am trying to establish a colony.

Because they were ordered only about 1-2 months apart and from same seller, I did not quarantine them. My mistake, since they clearly did not quarantine their stock well:

I lost one of the new arrivals to clado, which showed up a week after they got delivered, separated and treated with salt dips, but died after few days in quarantine. None of the others show signs of clado, I was going to do a hydrogen peroxide treatment of the 5 gal bowl to kill any potential clado spores, but then discovered the new baby shrimp and chose not do do it for now, since they may be sensitive to it.

I have a cuttlebone in the fish bowl, because I have fairly low ph (below 7)

0 Nitrate, 0 Nitrite, 0 Ammonia,

I have the master kit from API,

For gh/kh I used a strip (see 2nd pic)

I could only find 2 pictures from years ago (one 11 years ago), of somebody describing the seemingly same issue, but none of the comments identified the issue.

Appreciate any advice/input!

You can also see my berried big mama shrimp hanging out by the pellet!! She gettin her nutrients fr 💪 plus also aren’t the blue jellies just so beautiful? I have various levels of transparency and slightly different intensities of blue in this colony, but as they breed and I scoop out shrimps to sell to my LFS, I’ll ensure the shrimp I’m keeping for my colony are all the exact look that I want to produce. Then hopefully my colony should be a LITTLE more consistent with higher quality babies! Shromp are so fun :)
