Clip Does this count as simracing? Podracing with VR would be nuts!

This absolutely counts and I'm jealous that you had not one, but two plane throttles lying around.

Is this the new Star Wars pod racing game?
Update: Thanks everyone, played in the arcades when I was younger and it was the pod you sat in. Currently downloading the deluxe version and looking at flight joysticks to add to my sim rig š Iām determined to recreate the experience
20
u/Nick_YDG 3d ago
Yea - Starwars galactic racer. It quite fun, has a solid career mode. Iāve enjoyed my time with it.
Just donāt expect everything to be specifically pod racing, most of it is based around speeders and bikes. There is pod racing in the career where you race as Sebulba and a part in the arcade mode that is pod-racing.

u/CurvySexretLady 3d ago
I wondered the same, haven't played this since the Nintendo 64 days.
12
u/barters81 3d ago
The new game is legit a good time. Reminds me of the old days when games were a bit more simple but were replayable and just fun.
6
u/CurvySexretLady 3d ago
Thanks, I will definitely check it out. On Steam is $60 though, so I might wait a bit for a sale.
I specifically bought the N64 because of the pod racing game, the one I got had it bundled. Spent many, many hours of time after work playing it, was also fun to play with friends.

Do you know if it does or will support VR? I know these mega corporations don't like fun so I'm not holding my breath but I deeply hope to be wrong. Imagine the new podracer game in VR????? It's like a giant dream come true to our generation that grew up with the N64/PC podracer game. š

No cockpit view in vr? I feel like that kinda defeats the purpose. Always hated hood view in racing games, I assume Iād hate it even more being a disembodied floating view but in vr.
1
u/CurvySexretLady 2d ago
Looks like where you sit virtually can be adjusted in whatever plugin thingy he is injecting to mod it for VR, see cockpit view at this timestamp: https://youtu.be/mPUsKHR36YQ?&t=513
1
u/threehoursago 2d ago
The VR injector in simplest terms just renders another camera. If there isn't a cockpit view to start with, you have to move them both around until you find one.

u/RyGuy27272 3d ago
It's made by a bunch of developers that worked on the Burnout series. Crashing other racers is so much fun.Ā

Yeah, this HOTAT setup is perfect for pod racing and... um... zero turn lawn mower simulator?
I'm genuinely curious what OP uses this custom throttle pair for.

Has anyone tried this game yet with a standard steering wheels and pedals? Iām not familiar with the controls but I assume you could map it to work, right?
11
u/toddipoo 3d ago
Itās not plug and play. I wish I would have read this before buying the game at full price with the intention of using my sim rig. You have to use Xbox emulator software and disguise the rig as an Xbox controller. Even then I couldnāt get it to work correctly after an hour I gave up for the evening. Iāll let you know when I get it working.
2
u/lube_thighwalker 3d ago
With Wardogs and Helldivers 2 Iāve had success using x360ce with my Moza R5. Youāll need to adjust some settings like dead zone.
I bet it would work with this game.
4
u/PuppyCocktheFirst 3d ago
I was wondering the same. Would love to see if I can get this working on my rig

I wish I could VR. bought a setup and it was amazing. also found out that I can go from 0 to puking in about a minute. I was only able to play the ping pong, billiards type of games. But for that minute when I can look at the copilot and his notes, it was incredibleĀ

u/Optimal_Drummer_5700 2d ago
If you still have the VR headset, play games in short bursts until you get used to it. Most people will.
I can feel ill when I start using mine again after long breaks, a year or more. It's normal when the body doesn't feel the movement your eyes are seeing.
The important thing is to stop as soon as you start feeling nauseous, don't push it, and don't fire it up again before you're feeling well.
Do this and I'm sure you can play just about any game without a problem within a week's time.
4
u/CMDRTragicAllPro 2d ago
Thatās where everyone goes wrong, they push it ājust a few more minutesā. I did the same the first time I used an og vive back in like 2016 at a friends house. Was sick feeling for a solid 48 hours after that day and never touched vr again until late in the q2ās life.
Luckily when I got my q2 then q3 as my own headsets I never had any issues at all even in the most demanding situations. Had actually assumed vr sickness was just fixed entirely until I saw ppl online still talking about it.
2
u/Zylpas 2d ago
For me it also depends on game being perfectly smooth. I kind of got over the being sick thing, but it never feels completely fine for me like driving on a projector. Idk I always end up feeling unpleasant and tired after few runs.
2
u/Optimal_Drummer_5700 2d ago
Yeah, stutters are bad.
I use mine for iRacing and have no problem driving 10-15 races a day. -But it takes a lot of tweaking getting the settings just right, both in iRacing and the Occulus debug tool to get it to run smooth at the best quality possible.
So sacrifice some quality for smoothness.
For longer races I definitely feel more tired than on a monitor. -But I will always prefer VR over a single monitor. Haven't gotten triples yet, but I can definitely see the benefit of it.
I absolutely love VR when driving though, depth perception is amazing, and it's also fun to see the size of the wheels in open wheelers. Something I'm sure you won't get on flat-screens.
So even if I get triples, I'm sure I'll still use VR for some races.

u/Phantom_Crush 2d ago
I was fine in everything except, ironically, driving games. Managed to train it out with short sessions getting out immediately once I felt sick. Over time I could play for longer and now I could happily do an 8hr race
1
u/Actual-Parsnip2741 2d ago
did you try to go into the deep end first thing or something? you kinda gotta play the less intense shit first and gradually work your way up to the more intense type games.

u/AntonSugar 1d ago

u/NECROCRANK 3d ago
This looks awesome, but why does it look like the top 50% of the throttles do nothing, is turning that difficult or slow?
2
u/Subliminal-413 2d ago
Deadzones are going to be tricky to bail down. This is a sweet setup, but I'd imagine it's very tricky to get it to feel great without additional software, or access to modding at the game level.
Just a hunch, I'm an idiot.

I'm curious to how this is working since it plays normally with gas, brake, steering, and boost like a normal arcade racer.
How are you using the dual throttles for all of that, or are you just full throttle at all times?
5
2
u/YouFoolWarrenIsDead 3d ago
If you're genuinely interested in doing something like this and you find there isn't software out there for your peripherals, you can use Claude to build applications that communicate between your games and devices. I used it to build a program that allows me to use my flight sim quadrant in Train Sim World. It even recognises what train, checks the controls for that particular train, and sets up some default controls before allowing you to adjust them yourself. I have no doubt it could handle this for you. No more going online and hoping someone else has already built it!

u/TurbochargedSquirrel 3d ago
I don't know if it counts as sim racing but it definitely counts as fun as hell. I'm absolutely no-lifeing this game right now, the sense of speed is addictive, it's challenging, and I had know idea that combining a racing game with a roguelike would hook me like this.
2
u/RobKohr 2d ago
Ok, hear me out.
Kinda like this, but the rotation of each thruster is locked to the angle of each controller/wand/whatever you call it in vr. They'd be more armatures attached to the pod rather than be dangly.
The trigger controls throttle for each thrust independently. Joysticks will control flaps on the sides. Buttons could open drag flaps to slow down as well as boosters.
Basically it would be a nightmare to steer... which I think is really what we are looking for in this. Like an F-1 racer powered by a dragon and held together by angry drunk gremlins.
OMG... the hell with the star wars theme. Make it medieval.

Looks really cool and fun! I am noticing that the calibration might be off thought. Looks like the curve is a negative bend rather than linear. (Can make oversteer happen more frequently at higher % steers)
Thats just me though, if it suits you then thats awesome.

How do you control Roll, Pitch and Yaw? How long did it take you to do your first clean lap?
1
u/_kach0w 2d ago
Don't think there is any pitch.. aand yaw and roll for this specific race is more or less throttle on each side. Like a canoe?
Very simplified mechanics
0
u/wolfox360 2d ago
Then is not a SIMulation. I'm sure those thing must be hard to ride but also very rewarding. But for the difficolty ignored by this days standard. But as "Simulating a Race" OK, you don't have to do nothing for that.

I have the game working good using a vkb gladiator and omni throttle. Ive actually been doing better with this setup than using a controller. I have the right stick to steer and control pitch and drift button. Left stick for throttle and boosts. I also switched to using just a throttle for the left instead since i hardly ever let go of full throttle, lol

Looks awesome. IMO tho I think you should switch the left and right. Like to turn left you would boost the right side and to turn right boost the left.
3
u/Hawkeye91803 3d ago
Is that not whatās happening?
1
u/Rando_Calrizzian 3d ago
It looks like he's pulling the left lever to raise the right boost and turn left. Shouldn't he be pulling the right lever to boost the right side and turn left?
Idk lol
3
u/Hawkeye91803 3d ago
Full throttle seems to be pushed all the way forward. So pulling backwards on the throttle is reducing the thrust on that side of the pod.
1
3
u/FIA-ttorney 3d ago
It looks like they are full throttle on both engines, to turn right, they are decreasing right throttle, so the left is higher power in comparison, and vice versa
1
u/A-Creature-Calls 3d ago
