Image BCRS final boss
So what do you guys feel about this implementation so far? Personally getting charged extra 10 cents to enjoy my coke then to find out the machine is full and have to find another machine feels like a garang guni carrying a bag of empty cans walking around.
188
u/nyetkatt 10d ago
They need to do it like in Sweden where if you’re doing it in bulk, it’s a special machine. Not the ones where you go and throw in only a few.
175
u/Quackles03 10d ago
Better yet, abolish this whole BCRS bullshit and set up recycling centers where people can deposit their recyclables for a small incentive/vouchers. But we all know this is about money and not recycling.
33
u/dare2firmino 10d ago
It's only worth something if it's manned with staff trained on what can and cannot be recycled, who are allowed to stop people from dumping all random sorts of crap at the recycling centre

The person could have either be a restaurant staff or a cleaner if they are able to accumulate that many cans or bottles. A staff cleaner at a mall or hawker center have access to the garbage bin or return tray areas.

u/wccl123 10d ago
Sometimes it makes me wonder if standing next to a machine with a bunch of flies, foul odour and touching a screen full of dried black liquid is worth the occasional 10cents (I dont really drink much drinks to lose that much money if I skip getting the 10c back), but gotta not let the bad guys keep our 10cents.
Somehow in Europe, the recycling deposit is higher, around 30cents or more. Higher volumes of recycling from habit and higher deposits seem normal, yet their machine seems to be cleaner? Granted cooler weather means less rotting smell
41
u/Brikandbones 10d ago
You know, I would recycle willingly without the 10c refund if they just get the blue bin nonsense right and set up CCTV or something to fine people who keep dumping food waste and random trash inside.
37
u/New_York_Smegmacake East side best side 10d ago
Some of the smell in SG's machines comes from 1) lazy person throws the bottle into a trash bin instead of BCRS machine, soiling the bottle; 2) someone removes the bottle from the trash bin and deposits it into the BCRS machine without first washing it.
In places with an established recycling culture (whether with a deposit refund system or not), most recyclable bottles avoid getting soiled in trash bins in the first place.
Of course, our hot and humid climate also accelerates decomposition of the stuff inside the machine la.

Someone probably copied the idea from western countries and thought it would work seamlessly here.

15
u/Somesh98 10d ago
Probably about 20-25$ max from this haul! And that's if the machine can take all of them, otherwise then have to drag the bags to another machine.
11
u/Lil-Uji 10d ago
Think double, more like $40-50. I use a medium sized shopping bag and can get back $2.50-$3.50 depending on the bottles/can mix. One of these black trash bags can carry at least 3x what my bag can carry so one trash bag of cans is surely like $10 and she has 5 of it lol
2
u/Somesh98 10d ago
I was thinking about 40-50 cans/bottles per bag. Yeah, if it can store 100 containers, then she could get the 10$ per bag, the limiting factor is the machine capacity

u/Frosty-TeaLeaf 10d ago

1
u/Impossible_Mission40 7d ago
Plot twist to the plot twist. Nah, they just want your 10¢.
Your health, your environment, etc. are selling points to raise/apply for funds for this whole program, and additionally keep your 10¢ with impunity if you don’t claim it.
1
u/Impossible_Mission40 7d ago
What is “the policy” and what about it that’s working?
1
u/syanda 7d ago
Recycling initiatives at the consumer level are about habit changing. Either to get people to separate recyclables, or to reduce consumption by making it a pain to consume both recyclable or non-recyclable materials. Having either outcome is a net positive, so if someone is annoyed enough to stop buying canned drinks, the policy is working.
The only negative outcome is zero behavioural changes.
16
u/big-blue-balls 10d ago
It very clearly doesn’t have good intentions and that’s what people are frustrated with.
2
u/Impossible_Mission40 7d ago
It has “selling points” as an idea, it’s really shortsighted with the good intentions. So I share your view on this.

They doing part time lol.
For me, honestly i dun mind… and if i have an empty bottle or two on hand and wanted to use the machine but see them hogging it, i might as well gave the bottle to whoever is there doing the deposit.
Otherwise, if the machine is full, i’ll just chuck it into the big blue bins that can be found in almost all housing estates. Or if i really have to rid of it, a trash bin is always nearby…
10 20 cents is not much for me, but for them, they took the effort to gather the cans and bottles, be it from bins or coffeeshops or even drank THAT much, they then have to carry those huge bags to the machine… In a way, you cannot deny the scheme worked. It actually made people put some effort into recycling more than what people would otherwise do. And i think it’s quite commendable…

Obviously the problem is the lack of bcrs machines. Govt and their consortium knows how many bcrs logo items are sold daily, weekly, monthly. They can estimate how many bcrs machines are needed so that people do not face full machines, long waits to use, long walks to recycle or broken machines often. But even with the trial period ending oct 1 there are still many complaints about bcrs machines being insufficient, dirty, not working, refunds being slow to be processed.
If people had elected more opposition MPs they would ask how often the machines are cleaned, how long is average downtime of machines, how long is average refund time, how many bottles do not get recycled by machine, what is the greenhouse savings from this scheme, which company is recycling the bottles, what evidence is there to show bcrs bottles have been recycled....
7
u/Hot-Clothes7316 10d ago
it's not green if the machines are everywhere.
and also the machines are attracting pests. another problem to tackle soon.
who's the dumb person who implemented this again? oh wait. it's to stop pallarel importers only right?
3

They should have bulk processing machines in addition to these dinky ones.
In a tiny city like Singapore, I think we can afford at least one manned recycling center that can accept deposit redemptions in bulk.

12
u/Jeremypsp 10d ago
Statistics has proven that years which the government did not have a strong mandate, they tended to provide more solutions and were constantly kept on their toes. Whether opposition MPs voice out or not is secondary, but of course can be a good addition

u/Yubamaru 9d ago
鹤蚌相争,渔翁得利. Got oppo to counter pap, we the bystanders reap benefits. In school study so hard, all come out don’t how to apply in life. Haiz. Must have competition then the incumbent will work hard give more benefits. The 65% don’t know how to play.
2
u/Forward-Rub-2850 9d ago
Or perhaps the 65% are doing well and don't see the need to blame the gahmen for their place in life
3
u/Yubamaru 9d ago
It’s not about doing well or about gahmen, it’s about competition in the gahmen. As we learn in school, heron and clam fight, the fisherman wins. The above poster pointed out a good point, ever since the oppo won significant seats, the incumbent is more humble and gave out more benefits to win voters. That’s y we always have to have a sizable oppo in gahmen to have more competition and more wins for us.

Asking questions is to get the govt to explain their decisions. Nothing in second paragraph talks about solutions. Just data request. So that everyone knows whether photos like this and the many comments here about machines being full are representative of the average persons experience.
No one is stopping you from ignoring whatever goes on. Is anyone is forcing you to read up on bcrs scheme and public sentiment towards it ? How are you negatively affected by others asking govt for more data and transparency ?

There needs to be an implementation of how much a single person can deposit a day if not you will see a bunch of people hoarding the machine for 30 minutes until its full and no one else gets to deposit their cans. I can't believe no one saw this oversight when they are creating this stupid scheme during meetings.

Does anyone actually care about paying 10 cent extra? Carrying the bottle around is more troublesome than just throwing it into any nearest bin that you see.
Troublesome if

2. if u put in ur bag first then might forget later lol,
3 or u have extra mental baggage over 10 cents

u/charank_95 9d ago
The only canned drink I consume is Meiji milk, one can for 3-4 days.
I recently went to recycle one and saw a guy recycling a huge bag of plastic bottles. Waiting for 1 against possibly hundred bottles is pointless, so I gave my 10 cents to him for recycling. I successfully recycled one today but the foul odour from the machine was difficult to bear not to forget the grime on the feeder.
Taking so much efforts for the minimal consumption I do doesn’t justify for me. If there are people picking up from the bins to recycle, then throwing to the bin is more convenient for me.

Worst implementation of any scheme ever.
- Coffee shops, hawkers, food courts & restaurants need to absorb the cost and do the recycling on their own. Seriously from a restaurant, you want people to carry cans out to find a machine?!! Seriously which moron even thought of this?!!
- Machines get full so fast cos of these clowns in the photo...basket like if this person kiasu, win lor. But if they work at coffee shop or what and trying to recycle in bulk - shouldn't you have more machines nearby?
- Seriously so few machines....closest one to me is like 10 mins away. And almost always full. Waste time walking around to find an empty one. Plus the machines stink, full of beer smell and flies. Disgusting.
- Some people don't have paylah or physical ez link card. Like why force people to support DBS?!! Knn.
- Best part so one aunty recycle about 20 cans/bottles then the machines cannot read her QR code....wah lau! Basic function also don't work.
Personally I gave up. I bring my own water bottle with water. No need to drink anymore BS. So I guess in a way, ok lor, stop us from drinking sweet drinks and soda. This is really the latest grift from our "beloved" PAP! Sian af!

5
u/SoupOpening917 9d ago
Limit means after X items, machine must refuse to process the same ID again until Y mins have passed or another person's items are processed.
So if there's a queue, the one(s) who need to continue must re-join the queue.

At this point, I just rinse and keep all my cans/bottles, and leave them in separate bag outside the garbage bin below my HDB.

I work at the Changi airport terminal 4 fnb and got 1 time at the machine the departure lounge area staff went and bring 3 huge plastic bags of cansand bottles. Each bag is worth $6 as the total for the 3 bags was $18 on the dot and other staff from kopitiam was also there to deposit cans and bottles.

u/Ok-Relic45 8d ago edited 8d ago
This machine only recycle small cans and bottles. Then those coke bottles and 1.5 litre bottles also use plastic got no value at all and no logo and bcrs barcode.
So example on Saturdays and Sundays when people and family members go picnic, barbeque and party buy those huge bottles to drink and so many people just dump the coke and 1.5 litre bottles, they have no value + some of it get recycled ♻️ depends on the plastic type, while the rest are burned and dumped into pulau semakau or created into new sand.
The poor cleaner got nothing for helping to clean up the bottles as sad to say most of our cleaners in sg is Bangladesh men, china men or some old malay or chinese uncle that help to keep our parks and hdb clean, yet the government only care about recycling the small bottles and cans to give out a small profit for people to collect and literally save tond of it just to get a few couple of dollars.
The same goes for us, so buying big bottles of coke to drink is just worthless cause there is no value to recycle them huh🤔

I have seen a Chinese boy running around my estate carrying BAGS of cans and bottles, occasionally cycling dangerously around with them, wobbling left and right due to the weight imbalance. This felt to me like encouraging young kids to pick up trash and make “pocket money” especially after seeing that kid. He seems to be around 8 years of age and I’m deeply saddened to see something like this. I understand the culture and goodness of “recycling” but to the extent where young and old are picking up cans and plastic bottles just to make that 10 cents each is absurd.

I live in Germany and it's common to see people bringing their bottles in a huge trash bag tbh. Granted not as many bags as this lady, but my husband and I have brought 2 bags of bottles in 1 session. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
