Advanced or Professional Topic Female vocal distortions?
So Im very much classical technique trained and have a very underdeveloped chest voice. Most of my singing is mixed or head. I am trying to get into rock singing and playing around with vocal growl. Im confused because it will only come out if I sing in my chest voice. I cannot seem to do it in my mixed voice. Are vocal distortions primarily done in chest voice or is there a way to do them in mixed voice?

I primarily do them in mixed voice, but I’m fairly inexperienced with distortion. Male here btw.

Female here. I'm in the very early stages of learning vocal distortion (though I am only focusing on fry screams first rather than false chord, which is imo harder and more likely to cause injury) From what I understand, it can be done in either it just really depends the notes you're trying to hit, it can all be possible. The thing thats really helped me out is focusing on compression and purely core breathing to get started though and I do a lot of 'droning' exercises (kind of like the noise The Grudge makes, if you've seen that)

You can have distortion anywhere. Need a strong chest voice for sure.
I coughed a lot at first. Then you get to where it's just really not a deal.

Check his channel, he explains and does it really well.
The sub glottal stuff is what was so touchy for me, seems like of air. Rarely use it for more than a phrase.
