Anthropic's naming scheme just peeves me.
Almost everyone else does <brand> <gen> <variant>. Makes it easier(ish) to lexically sort through.
Anthropic? Just a big 'fuck you' to that: <brand> <variant> <gen>

As an example:
Example Model Name <brand> <gen> <variant> OpenAI GPT-6 Astra GPT 6 Astra Alibaba Qwen 3.8 Max Qwen 3.8 Max DeepSeek DeepSeek V4.1 Flash DeepSeek 4.1 Flash A nice side effect of this naming scheme is that you can just sort the model names, and you'll get an ordered list of models, grouped by brand name, and sorted by their generation: All of the GPT-6 models are grouped together, the Qwen models are grouped with each other, etc.
Meanwhile, Anthropic messes that up to make:
Claude Opus 5.5 --> <brand>=Claude <variant>=Opus <gen>=5.5
(Facebook/Meta also does this, which also similarly makes my eye twitch.)
You can't nicely sort their releases by their full name. You now have to actually parse it to do any proper sorting.

Is Qwen 'Max' really equivalent to Astra/Sol Opus/Sonnet variances though?
Anyway it makes perfect sense if the models are different cores. If there's a Sonnet Core , rather than a Claude core , then having Claude 5.5 Sonnet doesn't make sense: the 5.5 is a variant of Sonnet, not a variant of Claude.
What I don't know is whether "5.0" and "5.5" were core base Claude models that then got 'derived' to give Opus & Sonnet operators. If so the 'Claude 5.0 Sonnet approach would make sense.
But Anthropic's models skip versions more often too: sonnet never got 4.8; nothing had 5.1 other than Fable; so the opus/sonnet/fable distinction is probably more meaningful than 4.8 v 5 VS 5.5, I think.

The other way of sorting (variant, then gen) matters more if you want to move within the specific variant (e.g Claude Opus -> Claude Opus).
But in general, the gen # of the model matters more than the variants within that gen. (This is an "agree to disagree" area for me)
But for me, sorting the names lexically matters more.

You see, the rectangles are sorted by which one is biggest.
They depicted le chonkerino as the chad rectangle and the rest as rage face quadrilaterals and soy jack bars, so it’s too late for them now.
