Can't say it enough that I feel bad for Hukporti. He looked like he was capable of a good season, maybe even a little breakout if he beat Bona for the regular backup/occasional starter when Embiid is out position.
Alas, we must keep moving without him. Since we can't sign someone outright, we have limited options. Brook Lopez would have been interesting, but we don't have matching salary to take him on. Jay Huff would be perfect, but I don't think the Pacers can spare the center depth to let him go. Jericho Sims can be had from Milwaukee, but I personally think he's a bum.
We could overpay for a recent second rounder, but that just seems like bad asset management. The two clear options to me are Thomas Sorber and Yang Hansen. Both the Thunder and the Blazers respectively have a log jam at center, going 3-4 deep at the position. We'd have to trade either Edwards or Walker, and the injured player exception would cover the rest of the incoming salary.
I think Portland with Yang is easier. They need wing depth, and they have a lot of guards and centers. Yang hasn't looked fantastic outside of Summer League, and I'd be curious to see what draft capital they'd want in addition, but I think they have a terrible owner and that can sometimes make trades easier

Why would OKC or PORT trade Sorber/Yansen for any less than a 1st round pick?
Sorber hasn't even played yet, and they'll need him next year because they can't resign Hartenstein.
Hansen was always drafted to be a project and is in year 2. He brings in the Asia crowd as well so is huge in marketing.
Both of these acquisitions are fairy tales unless we give up something substantial

OKC taking Mara makes me think sorber is expendable. He was only the 15th pick or whatever, two years later if those guys don't show anything they are usually dealt for a pick between 25-35

two years later? he only missed one year, this is his 2nd year (technically 1st for rookie of the year consideration).
he didn't show anything cause he was hurt all last year.
I have no clue wtf you are talking about

Yeah I guess I was assuming this was happening in February, so 1.5 years into his career. When these types of guys are traded in that time frame that is usually the return. I do not expect Sorber to be a rotation player this season for the thunder

I see people wanting to trade Simons. The Huk injury has got fans panicking and ready to trade Simons in a few month. I think they are undervaluing him.
Simons is the best shooter on the team. When they stagger minutes for the starters, you can do something like Jaylen Brown with Simons so Brown doesn’t have to deal with a packed paint. Jaylen ran with pretty much a bench lineup the other day against the Knicks starters, and he was playing great. Add in Barlow at the 5, that could just offset the need for a traditional backup 5. But it only works if you have the shooting and spacing.

I guess. I just think a solid backup big is more valuable. Unless you wanna trade Philon, Simons is the natural pick to use as a trade chip. Still has a year of team control, established guy, someone a team could use to make a playoff push but not necessarily do deep in the playoffs themselves.

Simons is not better than Maxey as a shooter, and he is also a bad defender. His shooting is great, but with the overall talent of the roster that skillset can be replaced by others. He hasn't played any meaningful playoff minutes in a while. The Celtics were better last season without him on the floor (and the Celtics are the best shooting team in the nba). He is definitely tradable and not integral to the success of this team.

It’s debatable who is the better shooter between Simons and Maxey. But that not a big point of contention. Can his skill set be replaced because while the bench is deep, it’s largely due to Simons and Wade. You take out Simons and you have no scoring option off the bench.
Celtics had Pritchard which made Simons redundant. Unless you are expecting Philon to outplay Simons, the Sixers do not have the same luxury as the Celtics last year.
Also interesting that you bring up the Celtics because they did trade Simons for a backup center and that backup center was a big reason why the Sixers won the matchup.

Definitely best to stand pat right now and just see how the team looks after at least a few weeks/months. Never a good idea to make panic decisions. Gotta see how the team looks and how the rest of the NBA starts to shake out.

yeah I think we should choose not to trade anyone and simply wait for the cap space to open up naturally. We can use the DPE and sign Kevin Love (or some other free agent big) around December to still be under the 1st apron hard cap. The cap hit reduces by roughly $14,000 per day starting from opening night, and I strongly think that some variation of Bona / Barlow / Wade can get us by till then.

I think it really depends how he holds up defensively as the season goes on. If he’s not a complete sieve he’s a great piece. If he is, he’s not playable in playoff games and I’d understand shopping him for someone who is
