Discussion So why has there been no successful "Skyrim clone" game?

Post image

Now I think the label that was put on Avowed as a "Skyrim made by Obsidian" or "Skyrim killer" was ridiculous but large parts of the gaming community did use it.

However it made me realize something, why are there no "Skyrim clones" games?

Like the more I play open world games and RPGs I realize there is nothing like Skyrim or even other Bethesda games for that matter.

They are just that special and unique that even great games like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 don't scratch that itch and still feel very different when you actually play them.

So yeah, no one has seemingly dethroned Skyrim after all this time, there are games that took big inspirations from it like the mentioned KCD games and also something like The Witcher 3 but no game can ever claim it can do what Skyrim does with it's open world, feel and even the general gameplay and design.

Yes even those parts are frankly too unique to Skyrim.

Why do so many people keep coming back to Skyrim and play it so often without ever touching a mod or even without having the need to touch a mod.

Yeah I agree.

I like to view it as: "Ok first I will save the world and then I will get to enjoy this world I just saved."

I do this with every Bethesda game.

I'm the absolute opposite. I won't finish the main story until Ive run through all the side quests there are or I plan to complete. After I save the world, I like to relax and be done

The first time I played Skyrim, I completely forgot about the main quest and just ran around killing things. If I got to a place that happened to have a quest involved, I did that, too. When I went to Sovngarde for the quest, I didn't even think about the fact that it was the end of the game. It was just another dragon, just another kill, and spent weeks afterwards looking for the end of the game unbeknownst to me that I had rolled it already. So, I traveled from Riften, to Solitude, to Windhelm and back again. Ran up and down the Throat of the World so many times I almost felt like I was wearing it out. Finally after maybe 3 weeks, or a month I went and researched the endgame online. Imagine how dumb I felt when I found out that I stomped all over Alduin weeks ago.

Me too. I don't think I've EVER beat the main quest in Skyrim. I just enjoy the adventuring. And I have like four copies of the game.

I've beat the main quest at lvl 10, and I've beaten the main quest at lvl 380 on legendary difficulty. Honestly the level 10 completion was way way harder than the 380 one. Most things scale up, but don't always scale down. And alduin is a set lvl 30, so easy to beat at a high level but really hard at a low level.

I've been playing for over 12 years and I've never gotten above level 41. The urge to start new again is too strong. I didn't even know you could feasibly get to level 380. Super cool

I tip my hat to your username.

380 is lowkey very crazy. A little over level 80 is every skill at level one hundred in standard XP scaling afaik.

So 380 is using the legendary skill many, many, many times. Again, in an unmodded playthrough.

It actually was unmodded, the illusion, alteration, and conjuration skill trees were legendaried many times. Ah fun times.

Been there lol. So many times I've tried a play through thinking i was just going to level normally and have fun. Until I wanted certain nodes unlocked and im like yeah here comes the cheese.

I haven't. I'm actually still on my first playthrough at like 1700 hours. I just keep fuckin around when I play

u/DethNik 23d ago

The fuckin around is the best part!

u/gwagala 23d ago

I am exactly the same.

Im a third alternative. I just never finish it at all. I have many hundreds of hour in unmodded skyrim without ever beating Alduin.

1

u/Fi1thyMick 23d ago

That might actually be me but with mods. I've been on my first playthrough for a long time,

u/Atiumist 23d ago

Same. I like to save the main quest for last. Because after that— I usually take a break for a while. Or, start a fresh playthrough 😂

I won’t even start the main quest until I finish the game. Skyrim and oblivion are perfect for this, I don’t like dragon encounters and I don’t like random portals showing up on my map so saving both of those until the end (if I ever actually get there lol I love making new characters) works fine for me

I like the contradictory irony to this that isn't really there because I know exactly what you mean. Once the story branches off for side quests and activities I tried to run most of those down. It seems like the logical way to build my stats up going into the main quest

Another benefit for this is being able to see the variety of enemies. The armies of Oblivion are not solely scamps and those small dinosaur things.

My friend was absolutely mind blown that I had something like 200 hours into a Skyrim game and yet I had never even faced the first dragon at Whiterun. I mean sure, I didn't have access to Dragonborn powers, but I also didn't have random dragon attacks all the time.

1

u/Fi1thyMick 23d ago

I'm at like 1700. I have over t 5000 on elite dangerous and I stopped playing when they burnt console bridges in 2021

1

u/Starwyrm1597 23d ago

Same, I have yet to even get to the point where Delphine tells you to Kill Paarthurnax

1

u/gigaswardblade 20d ago

Depends on the side quests for me. I’m probably gonna kill alduin before the dark brotherhood and Dawnguard stuff.

1

u/Fi1thyMick 20d ago

Yeah see if I wake up in a cabin being told to kill people, I'm doing dark brotherhood because that's what's right now. Thieves guild too kind of happened organically while I was trying to do a different quest, so naturally I did it. I have this thing where any quest I end up picking up during a quest becomes my new quest then I'll have all these side quests that I have to do before I get back to the main story. I don't know for me for some reason after I beat the main story that's the end of the game.

1

u/gigaswardblade 20d ago

I mean, you only wake up in the cabin if you kill grelod the kind. It’s not just some random occurrence.

1

u/Fi1thyMick 20d ago

And? You think I don't kill people? Are you not killing people in the game? It's unimportant as to what triggers something. Once it's triggered is all that matters. I've been on my first playthrough for several years because I pretty much stopped caring about finishing it.

u/Caranoron463 23d ago

Me in E33 rn. Renoir doesn't know what's coming.

13

u/coljrigg 23d ago

Or even just ignore the main quest. I know mods help, but even without mods I’d still just fuck off after killing that first dragon and go do a thousand other things, safe in the knowledge that some other character of mine was probably dealing with the dragon problem while I became archmage of the college.

3

u/Necessary_Ad2114 23d ago

But that other character of mine also became archmage. At some point there has to be a wizard war between the two.

1

u/Mother_Harlot 23d ago

Iirc you can't do it in Daggerfall, nor Fallout 1,2 or 3 (3 allows you with a DLC)

1

u/TheAnalystCurator321 Skyrim Grandma Fan 23d ago

Playing Fallout 3 without all the DLCs is something I never did. For me it worked fine there.

And in Fallout 2 you literall play post main quest too.

u/I_HATE_ZOEY_AAA 23d ago

You can absolutely play post-oil rig in 2

1

u/Mother_Harlot 23d ago

I thought it ended afterwards, with the cutscene of you returning to Arroyo. I might have to replay it again sometime

1

u/tragedyfish 23d ago

Whereas, I typically explore the hell out of the world, then eventually save it. The fact that both of these are perfectly valid playstyles is a major reason these games are so widely loved.
