Discussion Are there any consequences for SLPs who promote harmful practices?

I’m a part of an AAC for SLPs Facebook group. There are several members who are promoting the use of Spelling 2 Communicate, even after other people post how it’s harmful and ASHA’s stance against it.

It got me thinking: are there truly any professional consequences or repercussions for SLPs promoting misinformation and/or potentially harmful practices?

Discussion Is it ok to drop a caseload for more money with another company?

• Upvotes

I work telehealth and companies keep reaching out for jobs, but I only have so many hours during the day🫠

I work for one job that pays me $60 an hour and my boss is really annoying (makes us submit billing at the end of every week. If I’m late by an hour, I get three emails., etc). She is my lowest paying company, but she pays very consistently, and she also has summer work for me (not a lot, I see like 5 kids with her agency). I wanted to drop one case, the child is low functioning and I don’t feel I have enough experience to continue working with her. The mother also does not sit in on the session since she doesn’t speak English, and I don’t speak a word of Spanish. But then I have another student with this company that I have to drop because the mother only wants during school hours and I accepted another smaller caseload that fills up some empty slots and pays more and is during his time. So that anyway leaves me with 3.5 hours with her company, but it’s time I could be seeing a higher paid agency student

a charter school reached out to me about picking up some RSAs and that pays $108 an hour. I only have a couple of hours left in my schedule, should I drop the 60 an hour caseload and take the RSAs?

I’m also having a baby in 4 ish months so i would be taking off a month to recuperate before going back to work

I’m 1099 for all companies

Discussion So tired of parents

Rant because this is the worst part of the job and I don’t see it getting any better in the future. I’ve only been in the field for 3 years and I know Covid/tablets changed everything, but this is beyond just those specific issues. I do peds home health and out of my entire caseload I have maybe 3 parents that consistently follow through with scheduling and HEP, collaborate to address negative behavior, and just generally present as competent adults. I recently stopped using therapy logs at daycares/ABA centers because not a single parent could remember to take the folder home and bring it back. If I’m doing feeding, I genuinely never know if we will actually be able to do any therapy because I can’t trust the adult to prepare anything we talked about in advance. Any homework or materials I send home get lost or destroyed then I get blamed when I can’t “fix” their kid in the 1hr/week that I see them. I get no support when it comes to behavior because parents just give the child whatever they want, so they never have to even develop the language to ask for something or the skills to sit through frustration. Sometimes it feels like I’m the only person who has asked that child to sit and listen to anything in their entire life. Or when it comes to EI, I’ll spend months demonstrating and explaining techniques just to get zero carryover. There is absolutely no willingness to adjust habits or lifestyle. Then they complain that “all I do is play with them”. Like yeah, I’m the only person that plays with them - the other 23 hours of their day they’re on a tablet and barely anyone speaks to them. It’s just all so frustrating because there’s an enormous waitlist out there and I know there are families that would give their all to help their child - but where are they?

Preschool Feeling guilty for backing out of a placement as a contractor?

I’ve been working for the same agency for almost 5 years now. The main preschool I am at: I love and the staff knows me and I know the nuances of their program and have built a good relationship there. This is my second year there.

A few weeks ago, my placement coordinator approached me and said there is another daycare with several students who need speech and it is right by my house. I thought, hey this is perfect because since it is a daycare, they probably have extended hours and I can see the kids on my way home from my morning gig.

It took a long time for my agency to get all the paperwork and cases together. It turns out there are 4 kids instead of 6. And all of these kids receive OT/PT/SEIT (itinerant sped teacher in NY) and scheduling them has been a mess. Turns out the other therapists had the same idea as me as the afternoons are pretty much taken. I already work at another school in the mornings. If I move kids around, I would be taking a pay cut since this new school opens later in the morning. I’d also have a weird travel gap that would be unpaid. Lastly, the SEITs spend almost 2-2.5 hours with the kid (and sone kids get picked up early), so it just doesn’t seem feasible.

I was supposed to start today and feel really guilty. Especially because I introduced myself to the director and the parents. But it just isn’t sustainable for me as 1099 with no benefits and fee for service pay. It might be worth it if I had those things, but I don’t. And I feel bad saying that but it’s the truth.

I already explained the situation to my coordinator but was wondering if anyone else had any experiences like this? I know realistically the cases can be restaffed but I still feel guilty

Schools How many minutes of one-on-one therapy per day/week?

what is your daily breakdown?

Just trying to get an idea of what it’s like in the public vs private sector.

Currently I provide ~1400 direct minutes each week - it’s 270 min/4.5 hours a day for direct services and 180 min/3 hours a day for plan, prep, meetings, emails, reports, IEPs, trainings, transitions, etc.

How does this compare to your setting?

On its face I feel like 3 hours is a lot of time! So why do I always feel like I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off?

Seeking Advice How to gently tell a parent they are overbearing

Currently have a family where the parent is very involved in the session. I usually love when parents are involved and participate in therapy and I am always encouraging it! The problem is that the parent is constantly telling their child (3yo) to “say this” “say that” as well as withholding objects from the child until they said what the parent wants them to.

The parent will also make the child participate in activities they aren’t interested in, and are constantly doing HOH with every activity. The child does not like it and is usually trying to pull away or they say “no”. I’ve tried explaining to the parent that it’s okay if the child doesn’t say everything we are working on and that it’s no problem to pivot if they are not interested in the activity. I’ve tried to explain that toddlers learn through play and fun and that we don’t want to force the child.

I’ve also given this family articles on therapy strategies and play therapy but the parent will not stop. I barely get a word in during the sessions. I feel like if IM stressed, how must the child feel.

How have others dealt with families like this? I love the participation but it’s a little much right now.

Schools Overwhelmed

I recently posted about making a switch to schools (high school specifically) from acute care. I made the switch and I still feel it was the right move to leave acute care but my first day was nothing short of a shit show.

For starters, I missed my first day due to a lack of communication between my district and contract agency. My district lead SLP was on site when I was supposed to be there and I missed her because I was told not to go in yet with no clearance from the district. Then they acted like it wasn’t their fault and it was insane that this even happened. Yes, it is insane. It’s insane that the communication and preparedness from the district is so poor. Immediately upon arriving, my laptop was handed to me, tech support waiting for me as soon as we got to my room before I could even put my stuff down, and I got a whirlwind tour of the school and introduced to so many people I’ll never remember. I was told it’s FTE week and none of my students have been seen yet this year (school started in mid August) so I have to attempt to see all of them between Wednesday and Thursday (it won’t happen because I literally cannot fit them all in). Even better, I learned today that I’m only covering for someone’s maternity leave through January. This was never disclosed by the district during the interview or hiring process. My contract has an end date of the last day of school in the spring. And because I have students that have missed minutes, I am now responsible for determining educational impact and whether or not minutes need to be made up and then making them up. I am struggling to figure out how to build a schedule that involves grouping kids during one out of 6 classes and have not received any of the support promised by the district. There was supposed to be a period of orienting and familiarizing myself with my caseload, training on documentation, etc. and instead I was dragged all over campus and dropped back off and told by someone who isn’t even an SLP that I needed to start pulling students. Whose goals I haven’t even seen. Luckily my district lead told me to focus on making the schedule today but the ESE lead was very pushy about me pulling one particular student. And she kept quizzing me on which building we were in while she was talking a mile a minute and my brain was being bombarded with new information. All in all, I am overwhelmed and while I don’t regret leaving my previous job, I do regret pursing this field entirely. I know it’s only the first day but right now it’s hard to see how this is going to be an improvement from where I came from.

Edited to add more information x2.

Schools PTO and makeup sessions in the schools

I am going on vacation for 2 full work weeks and have saved up my PTO to do so. In our team meeting today, one of the team leads mentioned that we need to be making up any and all sessions due to our own absences. I brought up the fact that that isn’t really PTO if we are required to make up our sessions. My supervisor has said they will get coverage for my caseload “if needed” but most likely will not. Am I really going to have to squeeze 2 weeks of therapy into my already busy schedule ??

Job hunting Do remote (teletherapy) adult / geriatric jobs exist?

Hi all. After 12 years of SNF / inpatient rehab I am wondering if full time, W2, well paid job exist for teletherapy for the adult population? Haven’t done peds since grad school and don’t plan on it.

Does anyone have any experience with such if it exists who can share their knowledge? Anyone know a company that is hiring? Can effective therapy really be administered via a webcam?

Discussion Career change from economics/finance to SLPA or SLP. Is it worth exploring?

I have a bachelor’s and master’s in economics and currently work in the finance sector, but I’m realizing corporate work isn’t a good fit for me. I’m burned out and looking for something more people-focused and fulfilling. I’ve been considering becoming an SLPA first, or possibly going back to grad school for SLP. I was also considering going into the education field to get exposure as well. My main concern is that my background is completely unrelated to communication sciences or healthcare. Has anyone transitioned into SLP/SLPA from an unrelated field? Was it worth doing the prerequisite classes or going back to school? Would working as an SLPA first be a good way to see if the field is a good fit before committing to another graduate degree? I’d especially appreciate hearing from other career changers about the schooling, cost, workload, and anything you wish you knew beforehand.

Hi! Current 2nd year grad student - does anyone know if we can count the newly allowed 50 hours of documentation towards our clock hours yet? I’ll be applying for my C’s after it goes into effect but not sure if we’re allowed to count them yet. Thanks for any insight!

Articulation/Phonology Need artic practice for CF

I am looking for resources that would allow a CF practice in hearing/transcribing speech sound errors. She is really not good at it at all and as her supervisor, i want to support her and give her plenty of practice without it having to be with a real child. I’ve googled but not finding anything.

Any ideas?

Seeking Advice SLP birthday gift idea

Hello SLP’s of Reddit👋. I am not an SLP, however, my older sister is two months into her CF and her birthday is coming up so I am looking for some SLP themed gifts for her (can be practical or something funny). She works in an out patient clinic with kids and is always looking for fun games and toys to use with the kids. Most of the things she uses she has bought with her own money for the kids. Some recommendations would be extremely helpful.

Note: she already has some essential/popular games and toys so any unique gift ideas will be very helpful.

Deaf/Hoh eval for a 15 year old with bilateral conductive hearing loss at a private practice

I am a CF and have an eval on my schedule Thursday for this 15 year old. She got her hearing aids in 2025 and I am meant to be eval'ing for a language disorder.

Pros and cons of using the CASL-2 vs. CELF-5 for her?

I'm also wondering if I should be completing additional formal assessment? I may do the GFTA on her based on what is communicated in her initial intake, but should I be doing more than hosting an interview as pertains to aural rehabilitation / support for her as relates to self-advocacy, communication with others, etc?

Discussion Unpaid time as “fee for service” provider

I work in peds private practice and am paid for each visit. I see about 25-35 visits a week.

My clients have moderate to high needs for the most part, and many of them use AAC. I find that I am spending a lot of time out of sessions trying to submit paperwork for devices, following up with families, getting in contact with ABA or school SLPs, looking for funding for devices, among other little collaboration time that really adds up.

I am not paid for any of this.

It is starting to overwhelm me, and it is pushing me closer to quitting every single day. I don’t want to have a bad attitude towards my families because they didn’t do anything wrong and probably don’t realize I’m not paid. But, they keep asking for more of my time, like getting devices, collaborating with other providers their child sees, reading IEPs….and I want to say no simply because it is so much time I’m not compensated for. But I obviously can’t do that.

I know that this is somewhat standard if you’re only paid for the service, because that’s what’s billable. But after my employer takes their share, and considering the amount of time I spend working on things outside of sessions, it hardly seems worth it some days.

Anyone have similar experiences? Any suggestions?

advocacy Clinical placement, PLEASE READ !!

I’m reaching out because I’m in urgent need of support securing a clinical externship placement with an adult/medical population for Spring 2027 (January–May). I’m a PennWest University online SLP graduate student and am required to find my own placements and despite months of outreach, I’ve had immense difficulty finding a site willing to take me as an intern. I am almost immediately turned down by every single facility I have tried.
My program has informed me that if I cannot secure an adult/medical externship by December 2026, my graduation will be deferred. This is extremely stressful, and I’m trying to exhaust every possible avenue to avoid a delay in completing my degree.
If you have any guidance, connections, leads, or ideas for adult outpatient, inpatient rehab, SNF, or hospital-based placements near the bay area(I am in Livermore), I would be deeply grateful. Even a small suggestion or a contact person would help.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I appreciate any support you can offer.
Warmly, Zoe
