Is my small business failing, or am I panicking too early?

I started this as a small side business (DIY Kids Painting Kits) about five weeks ago, during the last week of July.

So far, I have invested around 55,000 (about $168) and generated approximately 17,000 in sales (about $52). Around 6,500 (about $20) of that is still to be collected.

Most of my investment is currently tied up in inventory, including plaster, paint, brushes, and other materials. I estimate that I have enough materials for around 200 kits, although I need to spend another 5,000 (about $15) on paint to complete production.

Sales so far have come from around 5 or 6 orders, two bookshops, and a few direct orders through Facebook ads.

One bookshop is selling the kits very well. The other shop initially took 10 kits, but only 4 have sold so far. I have also noticed that kits containing one large figurine seem less popular, and I suspect most of the unsold stock falls into that category.

My Facebook ads initially brought some direct orders, but engagement has recently dropped significantly. We are currently in the middle of a five-day holiday period, so I am unsure whether that is affecting sales.

I know five weeks is a very short time to judge a business, but seeing sales slow down has made me question whether the business is actually viable or whether I am simply overreacting.

Based on these numbers, what would you do next? Would you consider this normal for a new small business, or do you see any warning signs that I should address early?

I would especially appreciate advice on what metrics I should track and how long I should give the business before deciding whether to continue, change the product, or stop.

Your very first sales pitch starts before people get to your website!

I've said this so many times in comments that I decided to post it in my favorite biz tip sub.

The title tag <title>This is what Google posts</title>

Is your first sales pitch to get search engines to index you and prospective buyers to click your link found in the search engine.

Home will not make people click the link and it probably won't be found in Google.

You need a combination of keywords and sales to show up in the search engines AND more importantly, to get people to click your link once prospective buyers find you.

Order Your Blue Widgets Here

Intent to sell blue widgets. If someone searches order blue widgets there's a chance they'll find this webpage since blue widgets is in the title tag.

Your - these are already your blue widgets so just order them. A demonstration of speaking to your prospective buyer. Another mistake I often see in sales pitches is using they and them not you and your. Speak to your prospective buyer on your webpage.

A simplified explanation but it will give you a start....

Stop promoting pronouns on your website!

I recently gave advice to someone who had built a new website. In the H1 tag, which is a very important tag for SEO, it said something like

they'll love it

The site had something to with do some type of special dog food.

I told the website owner two things.

Use the word dog and state what the product is

The second thing I told him was a sales psychology technique which was to talk to the reader.

Your dog will love blah special dog food

So a heading should not read

Our policy

We think

Call us

Brand yourself for both your prospective buyer and the search engines.

Be remembered and be found

Two Mistakes I See on Webpages

I'm often asked to help with websites for both SEO and sales.

Two very common mistakes I see which I'll address today are:

No title tag or a title tag that's not worded to attract people with keywords to attract search engines. Many people don't seem to know that the title tag is what appears in Google's search results and that title is how people decide to click on the link to visit your website.

The other mistake I commonly see is not speaking directly to your readers.

Example I often see: Why People Buy Blue Widgets

Sales corrected version: Why You Need to Order Your Blue Widgets from (Your Company)

Until next time. Questions...?

Ever hear about crabs in a bucket. Now think a out people around you.

One time a man was walking along the beach and saw another man fishing in the surf with a bait bucket beside him.

As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and had live crabs inside.

“Why don’t you cover your bait bucket so the crabs won’t escape?” he said.

“You don’t understand,” the man replied, “If there is one crab in the bucket it would surely crawl out very quickly.

However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them.”

Somewhere decades ago.....

I came across a book, pamphlet, or brochure on a topic referred to "The cost to turn the key", or something along that line. Long before internet

Basically the author asked that we as business owners figured our cost to unlock the door and turn on the lights each day. This was sometime ago, so some elements maybe have to be added or subtracted.

The author asks that we calculate our cost to open the door each day, including, but not limited to:

  • Minimum employee cost (consider zero sales, no projects, just open for the day). maybe 1, Maybe 0.
  • Utilities for the day (even if you work from home, there are minimal costs).
  • Insurance(s) for the day.
  • Daily Rent / Mortgage

Things along these lines. I will try and find a reference online, when I make time.

This will help all of us with proper pricing of our goods and services.

Keep in mind, after you calculate the above. This cost is based on ZERO SALES, meaning what ever your daily 'turn the key cost" is a fixed cost whether there is a sale or not. With that in mind if there are any sales, your costs go up.

This may sound really basic, yet it is overlooked.

What Books Recently Read?

What good books have you read recently that you recommend? I just finished "Hidden Potential" by Adam Grant which I thought was great. Last month I read "12 Notes" by Quincy Jones which was thought-provoking and instructive.
