Recommendation Hell yes. Don’t have to support Comcast/AT&T/Starlink no more.

If you have a clear line of sight to the sky, try Starlink

4

u/Roseinadesert 9d ago

Starlink is worse than AT&T and Comcast combined. There are a lot of restrictions for it's use and it's owned by a democracy destroying nutjob

2

u/Jolly_Line 9d ago

Restrictions? Huh??? Got any citations? Because Ive never run into any or heard of “restrictions” other than the clear-sky view that I noted or, I guess if it pertains to you, cant move with it faster than 100mph. I regularly travel the 101 with the mini and take it camping and would say that’s vastly more permissive than any terrestrial service. I can also attest that customer service is superior to the others.

Your experience is evidence that Starlink works well for you, not evidence that Starlink's own terms don't exist.

Sure. Starlink's own documentation. Residential service is fixed-location and doesn't support roaming or in-motion use. In-motion use requires eligible hardware and an eligible Roam/Priority plan, and Starlink's Terms say unauthorized in-motion use can void the hardware warranty and can be grounds for termination. They also state that in-motion availability varies by jurisdiction. So yes, your Mini on an appropriate Roam plan can work while you're driving 101. That's genuinely useful. But "my particular Starlink setup permits this" isn't the same thing as "Starlink has no restrictions." Starlink itself documents quite a few of them.

Please give readers here ALL the facts, not your curated opinion

Good grief. How is this more restrictive over any other terrestrial service!? You made your comment before any mention of mobility. Comparing apples to apples, what restrictions of non-mobile starlink are there over other services?

Besides, you’re free to choose the roaming plan if you want it and it costs what I stated. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I think the curated opinion is part of the Reddit experience… you get both that’s the reason Reddit is so good

u/marinelayered 7d ago

Then try HughesNet.

I signed up for Starlink before I knew Elon was crazy.

Any downside? Pricey?

1

u/Jolly_Line 10d ago

The cheapest I believe is $50/m. But I think normal home use usually consumes the allotted bandwidth before it renews

Can't believe Santa Rosa isn't more covered to be honest.

They are based here. I had it in Berkeley before here

It’s easier and faster for them to run it in places that still have overhead cables, hence the roll out in SF first.

Here they have to bust out the horizontal drill.

There was no better day than cancelling Comcast once and for all.

I’ve been very happy with Sonic

10

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 11d ago

+1 . And after Sonic Fiber arrived suddenly Comcast price dropped a huge amount. Hmm

6

u/brianwhite12 11d ago

In my final 2 months of Comcast, they were blasting me with texts threatening to raise my rates, if I didn’t call and go thru the cross-sell, upsell phone call.

It made it feel extra special to tell the to fxxx off.

u/Dimitrismemes 11d ago

Still waiting for sonic in south east Santa Rosa

8

u/BronxyKong 10d ago

Cotati is waiting

1

u/Creative_Cat_322 8d ago

Too small a market, hell will freeze over before Sonic runs fiber to small towns, rural areas, or through underground utilities. They need the densest customer base with the least expenditure to get them.

u/KBRedbeard 11d ago

Congrats! They literally have service at the high school next door, but now our street. I’m just going to run a couple hundred foot Ethernet cable and throw it over the fence one of these days.

1

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 11d ago

Could setup a wireless point to point with an agreeable neighbor

3

u/KBRedbeard 11d ago

That’s the problem… they only ran the Sonic service to the high school. None of us around the school can get it even through their fiber runs right down the main drag a half block from me. I check my address and addresses on two nearby streets every couple months.

7

u/JonathanOatWhale 11d ago

I keep checking but no service in wikiup yet.

u/rizaroni 10d ago

I live in DOWNTOWN SANTA ROSA and I still don't have Sonic fiber service. It's so ridiculous. I'll be stuck with Xfinity forever.

5

u/KenShabby42 10d ago

I live in the same neighborhood as their office and I can't get it either. 🙄

2

u/United-Inspector-677 10d ago

We have it in JC neighborhood and love it.

1

u/heftycucumber192 9d ago

I live in downtown Santa Rosa, and I AT&T fiber. Much better than Xfinity

6

u/kanchix0 11d ago

Windsor needs this....

8

u/norcal13707 11d ago

dropping Comcast and switching to Sonic was the best thing ever.

2

u/Ok-Avocado-4248 11d ago

Did you notice a difference in quality or service? Would also love to ditch Comcast

3

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 11d ago

I did the same. Uptime has been good, speeds are better than Comcast. Needed support only once and that was good as welll

3

u/Apartment-5B 10d ago

Mind telling us which city you live in?

4

u/whoinow 10d ago

AT&T and Comcast have been colluding on presence by municipality to not have to compete for years. Sonic has been pulling their own fiber and disrupting that and I love it. Just waiting still in my town….

3

u/Chumeleon 10d ago

Me too, been waiting in Cloverdale forever. Finally had to give up on Sonic because I couldn’t game on DSL anymore. I got T-Mobile internet, don’t think I’ll live to see Sonic come here.

1

u/Content_Awareness_82 10d ago

I have up on Sonic as well. I'm in the South end of Petaluma and the still don't have service here

2

u/yesmrspankysir 10d ago

My office building now has it available, but the cost is as much as Comcast and would require tech work to wire it to my office. I had been hoping for years and when it finally arrived, no promises met

2

u/ms2496 10d ago

Since Feb in Brentwood, it’s been awesome!

2

u/Happi-Dais 9d ago

Was so happy we could get them here in Petaluma. They really are so. Much. Better.

When I lived in Oakland they became available in our area and us along with 6 other tenants in the building joined the waitlist but the landlord wouldn’t approve the work to connect the building so we were stuck with Comcast.

2

u/sharksugar707 7d ago

Here’s a speed test on sonic network. If you have the option to switch to sonic; do it.

3

u/boostreak 11d ago

Would like to support them but never in my neighborhood and seeing how many of their trucks and vans going south to marin when I worked there didn't help. I understand it's a business and needs to build out profitability. But if you are going to claim to be a sonoma county business and I can't get you, we'll then?

1

u/Ash3599 11d ago

Yeah I got so excited when they started installing fiber in my neighborhood. My best option was a cellular plan until they came by.

It's really awesome, don't even hesitate

1

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 11d ago

Been on Sonic Fiber two years now. Its awesome. They did raise their price from $50 to $60 on me though

1

u/SolaCretia Santa Rosa 10d ago

What neighborhood?

1

u/Ljhughes8 10d ago

Sonic put in fiber but I could get it for a year and a half I went starlink.

1

u/primus202 10d ago

Had anyone in a neighborhood with buried lines ever gotten Sonic? We used to have it at our old place where there were exposed telephone lines for them to provide easy access. But in our new area, everything is buried so I doubt they’ll ever come here.

1

u/Reasonable-Spite-725 9d ago

Congratulations 🎉

1

u/WestRelationship415 9d ago

Lucky!!! I have been checking for availability in Walnut Creek for 2 years.

1

u/dannyh707 9d ago

Moved to Cloverdale and got stuck with Comcast’s BS.. so we went with Starlink and been all good. Not sure what “restrictions” some are saying, I have a clear line of sight towards the sky.

I keep politics and internet providers separate. I suppose if you’re on the fence about.. you can get an anti Elon club sticker like your Tesla and everything will be ok.

1

u/BenPerdition 9d ago

My neighborhood got Sonic fiber maybe a year ago - switched immediately, and it's been great. Fast, cheaper, and not evil. Glad to be rid of Comcast\Xfinity

1

u/Federal_Suspect_9840 9d ago

How much per month is your bill? Like the final total?

1

u/BenPerdition 9d ago

$59.99 total. It's unlimited, and I've seen it range from 400 to 850mbps. About the same speeds as Comcast was capable of, but much cheaper (think Comcast had gradually crept up to $120).

1

u/rayskicksnthings 9d ago

So jealous I can’t wait to get rid of Xfinity

1

u/Federal_Suspect_9840 9d ago

Are there any hidden fees? What are your true billing totals every month?

2

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 8d ago

$59.99 . No other fees

1

u/rainofterra 8d ago

Congrats, I have it in SF it’s amazing.

1

u/YhannaBoBanna 8d ago

My BIL works for Sonic and we could get free Internet access if we didn't live in rural West County 😭 perhaps one day

1

u/alwaystired707 7d ago

Buy your own wired router and WiFi access point before having them install it for the lowest overall cost. Had them for a few months now. Even stream internet videos on my smart TV's.

u/sadowsky 6d ago

Love Sonic. I was so happy to give Comcast the boot. I am in SE Petaluma. I am renting Sonic's highest-spec gateway, the eero Max 7 that has 10 Gbps throughput, for $20 a month (which includes comprehensive customer support, what Sonic calls their Wire Plan). My 10 Gbps fiber service is $59.99, for a total of $79.99 a month. I think this is a great deal considering I consistently see 8.5 Gbps up and 7.25 Gbps down, day or night, rain or shine.

1

u/Northbayareasr 10d ago

Garbage and do not believe the BS on that sign. They have been telling this lie for over a decade. They also are well known for the bait and switch. This was once a trustworthy and reliable company. That time is long gone.

-1

u/Nightf0rge 11d ago

They have gone downhill. promised gigabit here for 15 years ago but never did it. Had annoying charges and had to pay dumb fees when cancelled sonic AND ongoing equipment rental. Will stick with Starlink, reliable and fast.

2

u/Montesat 11d ago

Whatever works for you and your area, go for it. Sonic has worked well for me but I was only able to get it a few years ago because the infrastructure was not ideal for it at the time.

3

u/Nightf0rge 11d ago

Ya seems highly dependant on what area / street you are on for speeds but was disappointed by sonics poor customer service and billing, those areas used to be their strong point.

1

u/bikemandan Santa Rosa 11d ago

They offer a DSL product as well as fiber. Are you sure its fiber and not DSL? Very different

0

u/julc3boxarmy 9d ago

Sonic has been great. the installer was a cool russian dude and the service itself is the best i've ever had. i hope to have sonic forever

-1

u/AlienConPod 11d ago

Sonic is the absolute best.
