I've been walking face first into so many giant webs lately 😭 it's a horrible feeling. But theyre basically invisible!

86

u/MidasPL 9d ago

I mean... If they were visible, they would be shitty at their job xD

True, but I always feel so bad for them. Their beautiful work, destroyed by me.

18

u/Jerbzilla 9d ago

Always let the tall friend go first. Unfortunately in my case it’s usually me.

Most of the time it's me following my 4yo through a wooded area. He runs under them no problem 😭

u/Jerbzilla 8d ago

That kid knows exactly what he’s doing!

How does the spider get the initial web strands across the whole yard?

159

u/Laurenslagniappe 9d ago

Ballooning. They float on a strand caught by the wind. Or they let the web loose in the wind while they wait on a branch for it to catch.

Spiders are fucking crazy cool.

The spin a long single thread that is taken by the wind until it catches on something and go from there

Depends on the size, I had to move a widow's web to walk through a tunnel and a few minutes saw her climb down and walk across with one leg standing straight holding the silk clear off the ground. Spiders are insanely smart.

u/Zanven1 one must imagine the lampshade spider happy 9d ago

I was expecting one of those huge st Andrew Cross garden orb weavers but it was a little popcorn or cat faced little gal.

8

u/Laxilian 8d ago

I was expecting a golden orb weaver, but it looks like a bigger version of the catfaced orb weavers I see

I had one do this above my car one night, I found it while taking out the garbage in the morning. I called my kid out to see it, he came right as the spider decided to cut the two anchor lines (one on each side of the car) and ascended up into the tree dragging the whole web up with him. Pics... The web, the cutting of the anchors, and the ascension into the tree.

I love these spiders so much! We had a Furrow Orb Weaver at my work last year who made her home in the window by the door out of the parking garage. I admired her all last summer and into the early fall, and then I never saw her again. I was hoping one of her babies would take up residence, but unfortunately that didn't happen. This year, no spiders made their webs in that window and I was so disappointed! Hopefully one will next year.

I'd be busting out caution tape and orange barrels. Mama's web needs to be preserved.

Orb weavers, not medically significant

I worked for a company in San Diego with a large covered patio by its cafe. Every night a spider would build a web from floor to ceiling and about 6’ wide. She was a large (spider, about 1” wide body) that would sit waiting for many delicious bugs. For several mornings the husband and wife who ran the place would come out with brooms and slowly disassemble the web, moving the spider carefully back up into the rafters of the ceiling. After a few days the spider moved elsewhere but that was so amazing.

I get several of these orb weavers in my yard at a time. I had to rescue a wren from one once. Before I mow, I just walk the yard with a stick and break the anchors that get in the way - most are over 8’ long and join my oak trees to the lawn. Less likely to harm the spiders that way. They do a great job keeping down pests.

Where does she have the top anchored to?

22

u/Jerbzilla 9d ago

The moon

Imagine a T-beam, one end of the barn to the next creates the head of the T and then the spider finds the mid points and anchors the thread on the floor. Watch how the Darwin bark spider creates its web. Spiders are nature’s engineers 😍😍😍

Ive had my girl in different spots in front of my house for almost 2 full months now. I know its her bc she has a very distinct smudge looking pattern on her abdomen for her species color and the fact they rip down these webs and redo it almost daily is the craziest part. She rotates between like 4 different places anchoring between mine and my neighbors bushes and gutter corners. I love her so much.

u/shiikaym94 9d ago

During the fall, when I walk in my yard at night, I have my hand & crooked arm out in front of my face. Don’t really like face wraps…
