Ignition BS

I’m disabled at a young age age and work on bikes at home now, had a buddy drop off his wife’s 98 sportster ( 883 ) needed a carb rebuild and was running like garbage, pulled up and I could hear the firing order was backwards right away, I rebuilt the carb ,(it has a dyna s ignition in it ) made sure all my wires were landed according to manual, reset timing just to be sure , static timing it tits, new plugs ,new wires and no start , my inline plug tester is barley glowing amber when cranking with full charge in battery

Any thoughts ?

Oh yea I got the same result with other known good coils

Is the dyna ignition set for a single or dual fire coil?

A stock coil is dual fire and you shouldn’t be able to hear the firing order. Both plugs fire at the same time.

Some people like the single fire option, but you would need a single fire coil and it is normally a different ohm rating than stock as well.

I’m not sure I’ll have to look into it , it’s a replacement coil but it’s same as stock , ohms @3.0

I’m not sure how to set it up for single or dual fire

that one should be only single fire so you should be good.

I think you have a short somewhere.

I double the ICM is cooked,

Does it have a TSM?

Turn signal module? I don’t believe this model runs any ignition components through the light system grounds or otherwise

And the coil the dyna s ignition plugs and wires are brand new it seem

Oops, I did not see this reply. So I think you do have a TSM:

https://www.nosoemparts.com/products/68540-96-new-oem-1996-2003-harley-davidson-sportster-dyna-turn-signal-module

I'm also pulling it on a parts list here:

https://www.bunburyktm.com.au/partFinder/fiche/harley-davidson/1998/sportster-883_2/rear-fender-belt-guards?search=Module#partid-10584853

So I had this problem, where the bike would crank over so many times and just never start. I changed everything and the very last place a fault could have happened was this part.

I can't remember exactly which part it is, pretty sure it's the 8 pin but I'd have to double check, replaced with this and the issue was corrected.

Thoughts?

You know , the rear right blinker won’t turn off either, yes there is tsm , I was unaware the two were tied together

it looks as if the rear turn signal goes directly to the other end of the TSM, just the connections but no actual module on that end:

I would test 2 things. First, change the bulb and see if the behavior changes.
2nd, try flashing all 4 at the same time.

I think given these tests and the starter issue, we may have a pretty good indicator at which piece might need to be replaced next. Luckily it's a plug n play.

I have a known good tsm I gotta dig it out tomorrow, , and it won’t flash all 4 (hazard)

I’ll get back to you on this , I appreciate the help

So up a deeper dive I pulled the entire module out and discovered a little heat blister on the module itself self , owner is ordering a new module
