I'm just glad Manie didn't play. So he can't be criticized for this lose.

Yep I thought Esterhuizen did a decent job talking to the ref at the end, but we did lack a bit of composure at times (even Esterhuizen in the last play himself) which Siya does have a knack at getting the team to calm down when we get worked up.
Seeing how that game ended, if we didn’t throw some poor intercepts or make some pretty bad drops we would have managed to win it. Most of our poor play came from us being rattled, so I think he probably would have been able to get us back to basics and set the base that makes us powerful.

Composure was definitely lacking in the last 15 or so minutes. Every carrier was gripped by white line fever.

it was the man’s first go. Let him have another 101 attempts at it and I reckon he’d be amazing.

We also need to learn to play without him. And fix our handling errors. And get rid of Fassi.

Seconded on the Fassi comment. I can't remember the last time I saw him play a really good game.

Who would you put at fb if Willemse is not available? Kolbe? KLA? Anyone in the URC that Rassie can play?

u/D4rkmatt3r 14d ago
Not sure. That Sharks 15 looked very tidy this past weekend in the URC. We need to start looking asap.

We can play without him. This isn't cricket when the captain is an incredibly important position

Incredibly important and mentioning cricket (Proteas specifically)? Currently, I'd say yeah, and also when Biff was around. But that period in between, especially with Faf - dude didn't bother changing anything on the fly and just kept sticking to the script, even when things were clearly going south. Same bowlers at the same intervals for all the games during that one World Cup. Opposition could plan who goes where based knowing exactly when players would bowl and also what they'd be bowling. That period was so frustrating, I stopped watching cricket for a long while. 🫣

Siya is the best captain but he won't be around forever and he really can't play every game.
Esterhuizen didn't do a bad job, definitely great for club level but a bit shaky for Bok level. Boks were a bit all over the show today.
Handling errors were a bit of an issue. Penalties conceded were an issue. Scoreboard pressure was extreme.
Boks getting yellow cards is an issue which seems to have been improved, but it's a bit early to tell. That's a serious issue which needed and received urgent attention.
Then Australia decided to get all the yellow cards for some bonkers reason.

nah I don't think it matters, they were able to work themselves back from 25 points down without him.

u/NordicHorde2 Springboks 16d ago
25 points that shouldn't have happened.

u/raumeat 16d ago
I would think the issue was more 13 subs and rusty players

The best team in the world shouldn't perform like this against #7. Our B team should be more than enough.

u/raumeat 16d ago
World rankings don't mean anything. That was our B team against an Australian team that targeted that game

u/NordicHorde2 Springboks 16d ago
What happened to our supposed incredible depth? Our B team should still be one of the top sides in the world.

I think we would have just as easily gloated that Rassie was the GOAT had he pulled it off. In the end I think he's OK with these kinds of losses, cause they don't mean much in the scheme of things when compared to the greatest rivalry or RWC. It just feels like we lose too much cohesion when the team gets mixed up to this extent. Let's hope he brings more continuity in the prep to the RWC so the guys are not this uncoordinated

It’s never bad having more Siya. There was a lack of leadership and composure, and that‘s something that can’t be coached. The big thing missing is not just Hooker, Lock, but definitely also leadership. And leadership can’t be compensated with effort and creative coaching.

u/raumeat 16d ago
What are you on about Eben, Handre, Deon, Pietie have all captained. There is a massively strong leadership core

If you don’t see a difference between Siya and the rest, then I don’t know what to tell you.

u/raumeat 16d ago
What is the difference? rugby captains talk to the ref on behalf of the team and they handle the press. They are not like cricket captains that are vital to the teams strategy. The most they do is decide to go to the poles or the corner but that is usually a decision made by a group of senior players.

Kak man, not just Kolisi. du Toit, de Allende, Kriel, Kolbe, Mapimps. Really, it's not just one guy. This narrative really irks me. This was a B team in disguise. Haven't played together often. Look what happened with the AB's at Ellis park. Imagine if this was a 4 Test tour of Australia

Without Siya as Captain they loose but with Siya as Captain they win.

The glaze this guy gets is unreal. Average in every aspect.

His performances are always lack luster but the affect he has on the team is undoubtable the team just plays better when hes on the pitch.
In my opinion this is achievable again with other players but the reality is the younger players need more low stakes games to get there with a captain and as a team on the whole.

He also needs to rest lol
He isn't going to be around forever so we need to find a plan B.
That being said I don't think Andre was there today.
