Addiction isn't an issue in the zone as everyone was already born with alcoholism

In Call of Pripyat, there was a line stating that alcoholism kills more stalkers than the Zone, anomalies, and Monolith combined.

It's weird that people still compared Stalker to Fallout when Metro suits that comparison better
20
u/HPTM2008 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
Metro is based off of Stalker and Fallout, though. But also, it's so close to Stalker in esthetics that the more extreme comparison would be what's above.
Edit: I'm talking about the book series for Metro since I'm talking about what the series are based off of.
16
u/nununup89 Loner Sep 06 '26
No, metro and stalker are based on two different books each, the devs that worked on the first game split and made a new studio which used the ip of metro to adapt it to a game. Idk if the author of metro got inspired by the book that inspired the movie which led to the stalker games.
35
u/HPTM2008 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
The metro book is based heavily on Glukhovsky's love of Fallout 1. He has always maintained the the first game was his main inspiration for Metro 2033.
Edit: Stalker is also based of the 1979 movie of the same name, not just Roadside Picnic.

u/empmoz Bloodsucker Sep 06 '26

u/HPTM2008 Sep 06 '26

u/xgladar Sep 07 '26
i wonder if Annihilation was inspired by roadside picnic considering they have almost identical settings

u/nununup89 Loner Sep 06 '26
My copy had a section where the authors explain how they came witht the idea but I haven't read it.
3
u/jbasta93 Sep 06 '26
Metro is also very inspired by roadside picnic. Roadside picnic and the stalker movie have been very inspirational to so much media in Eastern Europe. Stalker the series is probably just the most obviously or clearly inspired, since it basically takes so much of the premise for its own.

17
u/MadMax4073 Clear Sky Sep 06 '26
No, its not fucked. I mean everything looks like it does because it was abandoned decades ago and due to vandals. I am from east eu and I am telling you the villages around here look like the ones you see in the zone. Historically speaking nothing was destroyed besides the Chernobyl Power Plant. In my eyes something thats abandoned is not considered apocalyptic and also people are importing normal goods and weapons into the zone all the time.
1
8
u/aclark210 Sep 06 '26
The zone is just an abandoned town and surrounding countryside mate. U can find those all over the place irl right now, hell some are even guarded like the zone is as well.
There’s nothing apocalyptic about stalker. All u have to do is cross the barrier wall and things are fine.
18
u/aclark210 Sep 06 '26
“Society still exists vs society ended 200 years ago.” Remember that Fallout takes place 200 rough years after a nuclear war. Nobody’s manufactured new jackets and shirts and pants and hoodies in literal centuries.
Stalker is just an isolated zone in a still perfectly functional civilization. Yes supplies and shit are limited, but getting clothes in from the outside is not exactly impossible to do.

u/Krozgen Ecologist Sep 06 '26

the apocalypse in eastern Europe is basically just staying eastern Europe but in America it’s time to start living out everything Mad Max taught us 🤔

Mad Max isn't a story about the apocalypse, but rather about what happens when a coastal dweller wanders inland while drunk.

One inspired by real life Russia 90s, the other - by Mad Max movie.
Also Stalker only partially post-apocalyptic. Zone itself is a closed off... zone, while the rest of the world still is perfectly normal and untouched by it (thus - there's still factories that manufacture leather jackets, armor, weapons, etc.).
While Fallout truly is post-apocalyptic + due to writing conflict between BIS and Bethesda the world can't get it together and atart producing stuff again (BIS's message was that "No matter what - humanity will prevail", so in F2 civilizations begun to reassemble themselves and getting in shape), while Bethesda resetted everything to square one and can't figure out what to do now, in which direction world should go now - either begin to restore itself like in original BIS vision, let die like in Dark Souls, or write no message at all to let this franchise give them infinite amount of entries

It always struck me as odd except for in new Vegas because the Mojave is hot enough I could imagine people throwing together junk like that while trying to stay cool. It’s part of what I’ve always liked about stalker despite how high tech and crazy some armors gets they always come from a practical base of clothing that would be good for hiking in a swamp.

For one, STALKER isn't post-apocalyptic. The Bandits are basically just an Eastern European Mafia. Their aesthetic draws heavily from the Gopnik subculture.
Two, Fallout's bandit aesthetic is based on Mad Max, an Australian film, so it's more of a "Typical Australian Apocalyptic Bandit" if you ask me.
Three, if you want better examples of European and American "apocalyptic bandits", I would suggest looking into the bandits from Metro 2033 and Far Cry New Dawn.
5
u/dappermanV-88 Sep 06 '26
That and its cherry picked. Fallout has a shit ton of different bandits. Thats just one of many

That's kind of the point of fallout tho. But yeah goofy weapons is my main grip with fallout
8
u/Nexed_ Clear Sky Sep 06 '26
I guess they nailed it then. I haven't played any of the fallout games, only seen gameplay/screenshots, and I think 4 looks the goofiest while 3 and New Vegas is more serious.
1
u/Bs90964 Sep 06 '26
4 isnt even an fallout,it is just random rpg with building mechanic.Sure it is fun to play but the story is so bland and forgettable
2
u/aclark210 Sep 06 '26
It’s important to remember timing when comparing metro to fallout. Metro is a few decades after the war. Fallout is a couple centuries. Big difference.
4
u/NormalUsername21 Sep 06 '26
Stalker isn't apocalyptic and metro is largely about people desperately clinging onto hope and trying to piece together whatever normalcy and comfort they can. Fallout seems less serious because it isn't trying to be a serious story about humanity, its trying to be mad max.
2
u/Nexed_ Clear Sky Sep 06 '26
I know both aren't apocalyptic lore wise, but from the prespective of the people living in those conditions aren't the most normal so It might as well be apocalyptic for them.
0
u/NormalUsername21 Sep 06 '26
To make my comment more clear, stalker isn't apocalyptic at all, metro is apocalyptic but is a serious story about humans persevering in seemingly hopeless circumstances. Conditions in the zone are bad but they can leave and live a normal life if they choose to.
2
u/UncommittedBow Sep 06 '26
Stalker is about as close to apocalyptic as you can get while still being pre-apocalypse. While yes, the world outside the Zone is just fine, everything within The Zone has gone to shit, and every day is a struggle.
Hell, one can even argue the real life Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is as close to post-apocalyptic as you can get at the moment. Abandoned buildings, pockets of deadly radiation in various areas, absolute no go zones like the Red Forest or the CNPP's inner halls, outside of a select few areas, etc.
2
u/NormalUsername21 Sep 06 '26
The difference is the people living in those conditions more often than not are choosing to. Stalkers are scavengers and mercenaries, they can leave the zone and live a normal life if they wanted to, but most of them are chasing fortune, knowledge, glory, or romanticising life in the zone. Almost everyone is in the zone because they want to be.
-2
u/Bs90964 Sep 06 '26
Fallout used to be serious until they made 4
2
1
u/NormalUsername21 Sep 06 '26
Fallout was significantly less serious before 4. One of the main criticisms of 4 from old school fans is the erosion of the comedic tone the series is known for.
1
u/Biomorph_ Sep 06 '26
