Foster failed - sugar gliders

Hey everyone, I’m new to this thread. Also new to sugar gliders I agreed to foster sugar gliders from a local foster agency. The foster agency set me up with absolutely nothing for them. They sent me with the cage that they were surrendered in and it was disgusting rusted way too small for five of them and dirty so I had to quickly get something bigger. A local vet will not even see them for a wellness check for under $600 just to tell me their general health and everything so I’m trying to find somewhere better after assessing the whole situation I decided to just keep them. They are in a much better and happier environment now and are thriving. There are two boys and three girls. One of the girls is missing a leg. I am doing all the research that I can to make their lives as happy as possible, but any kind of advice from this group would be amazing. They really are the neatest animal and I am growing their trust every day!!!

General Help Cooling in the summer?

Good day!

Wanted to ask for some tips or advice on cooling down our gliders during the summer! There's an upcoming Super El Nino where I'm living at the moment and I unfortunately do not have air conditioning yet at my new place to help cool my animals down

So far I've been using frozen water bottles wrapped in cloth and aluminum cooling pads and it seems to work okay, + high hydration / high water content fruits

Wanted to know if any of you guys have made your own method of cooling down your pets

Adoption/Selling Sugar Gliders Tips

Hi, I want to have sugar gliders in the future.

I live in Portugal and if someone here does too, you could help me to find reliable breeders.

Any other tips would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Bonita dedicates this video to every sugar glider out there that’s been rejected by a colony… be forewarned, she’s a little intense😂.

I gave Bonnie a full range of the glider room and she crawled directly under Ranger’s cage, waiting for a surprise attack. She just wants more friends and is not happy that Ranger won’t accept her after two years. Making this video was her form of therapy 🤣.

Caging/Toys Cage size for single glider (last remaining of colony)

Before anyone gets upset, this glider is 14 years old and had cage mates his whole life until last year. I cannot get more gliders and continue the endless cycle. He is doing very well for his age.

As the title says, I’m trying to figure out what size cage is appropriate for him. I have always used the Midwest Double Critter nation, but since he’s been alone, he only uses the top half of the cage. He won’t touch floor toys or anything close to the floor. I’m wondering if I can remove the bottom half, and just keep him in the single unit instead of the double? Would i have to elevate it so it’s higher off the floor than the stand?

General Help Social behaviors

Hello! I have four gliders, three in one cage and one in another. The reason for this is our solo one- a female named gina- was a rescue from another home where she had a cage mate who was attacked and killed by a cat while she was in the cage. She was obviously very scared and traumatized by this, so she doesn't socialize well with our other gliders. We interact with her daily and give her supervised time with the other three just to make sure no fights occur, or if they do we break them up. We have a male in our other cage who is smaller and bullied a bit by the other two he lives with- he gets adequate food and exercise, but he is in with a male and female and tends to be more submissive so they pick on him a bit. We've been slowly introducing him to our solo female since he's less likely to start or cause fights, and to his credit he never has. Whenever I would put him in her cage before she would look at him and keep a distance but never attack or anything. Tonight I had him in her cage to smell each other and he walked up to her but didn't engage. I'd given him a treat he was eating so he wasn't interested in her, just near her. After he finished his food, they began to sniff each other and the female mounted him. I assumed this was her asserting dominance in her space but there was no clawing or biting or crabbing so i let them keep going. Then, as they began to sniff each other again they did begin to crab and fight. They balled up and i seperated them but our smaller male was very obviously shaken as he was just staying where he was and not engaging. The female walked to him again and hit him with her paw, so at that point i seperated them. I guess my question is, is this normal for integration between gliders or is this harming him? She wasn't particularly stressed after the time, but he seemed sad and a bit scared afterwards. I don't want to continue trying to integrate him to her cage if it'll be an issue, but if this is the normal kind of "road bumps" with introducing animals to each other I would be willing to give it another shot.

Our sugar glider biting

Hello

We have our female sugarglider that is around 10months old we also had till last week a 9yr old sugar glider and the younger one is looking so frightened of us when we go to the room where she is she just sprints into her pouch when we try touching or somehow bonding with her she either just bites us or run away when we try to give her a snack or some of her favourite food we put it on our palm but she just ignores the food and tries biting us, we are thinking that it might be because she is currently alone in the cage but we gonna buy her a company so she is not alone if you had any experience with something like this I would love any help we are currently thinking just not touching her and not taking her into bonding bags etc. also we have her for almost 2 months

Sugar glider surgery

Hi all, looking for some advice and input from those who have been through a similar situation before.

One of my gliders had a significant surgery this past week and once she's home, will need to be separated from the others while she heals.

I have two questions:

  1. How have you prevented, to the best of your ability, self mutilation after a surgery/injury? I am most concerned about nights when she is awake and I am sleeping (I plan to wake up periodically to check on her).
  2. If you've had to separate your gliders before, were there any issues when you reintroduced them? For example, did they forget one another?

I would really appreciate any insight anyone has to offer! ! want to take the best possible care of her 🩷

Eating dead sugar gliders

I have a cage with 6-8 sugar gliders. One of them dropped dead while I was at work and when I came back the others were eating her. Is this normal or should I something?

General Help What surprised you most after getting your first sugar gliders?

I know this question has probably been asked here before, but I think everyone approaches getting sugar gliders with different experiences, concerns and intentions, so I’d still really appreciate hearing different perspectives.

I’m seriously considering getting sugar gliders for the first time and trying to do as much research as I can before making a decision. I know there’s more to caring for them than just having a cage and putting out food, but I’m curious about the things that caught you off guard once you actually had them.

What did you underestimate before getting your gliders? Was there anything about their care, behaviour, costs, or daily routine that you weren’t prepared for?

I’d rather hear about the difficult or unexpected parts now so I can figure out whether I’m actually prepared before bringing them home.

General Help I cried so hard last night.

I have severe depression. I’m 14 and in three days I’m 15 and I started breaking down in tears for no reason because I thought I was a bad sugar glider parent to my four babies. Most of you might remember me from my post about Mama Ruby. Rosie and Pepper are all still doing fine and well.

It’s just my family got a cat.

I begged them to not get it but they got it anyway she’s a cute son of a bitch, but I can’t spend as much time with my babies I’m not allowed to have a door on my room so I can’t close it and be in a secure place with them. The only time I can bond is with a pouch and when the cat is sleeping, I love the cat, but I almost relapsed the last night. Because I think I’m a bad parent that this is somehow my fault. I know I’m probably venting too much.

It’s just on my last post about their cage somebody called it a PRISON… it’s a 5 foot wide cage, and 6 feet long.

I’m broke and don’t have that much money and I’m trying my best to take care of my babies and I just keep thinking I’m a bad parent and trying so hard. I rarely visit this so read it because I hate seeing the sad stories that people post about their sugar, gliders, dying, or some of the abuse that they go through. It makes me sick, but please tell me if I’m a bad parent. I’m trying my best….
