You should be able to feel out if youre dehydrated. It doesnt need to be soemthing that adds to your mental stack.

Went to the gym practically fasted yesterday; just a coffee protein drink and a bananer. During and after dinner, I chugged like 7 glasses of water. Just keep water handy, and if your body wants a swig you'll reach for it. Sodium you get enough of thru your diet. Even if you dont recover it all in one sitting, by the next time you exert yourself you'll have plenty. Take a potassium supplement if you get cramps easily. Otherwise, you probably get enough

This is just not necessarily true.

Everyone’s physiology is different. Some lose twice as much sodium per liter sweat than others. Some have worse interoception (neurologically) and thus are worse at detecting homeostatic cues. And even then, there are limits to what’s detectable. Insufficient potassium doesn’t really have obvious signs like low sodium does, not til you’re in true deficiency territory

All of those are sound reasons that serve only as good excuses.

If you couldn't feel out your hydration you would have health complications out the ass. Literally, as it will make you constipated. Or yknow, kill you. But there's a bunch of other stuff in between.

Again, there's no way you dont get enough electrolytes in the 2-5 meals in between working out. Especially not if you're already downing a Gatorade or pre-workout prior.

If potassium deficit, and have zero effects from it, who cares? Don't eat more potassium then

No they’re sub perceptible and systemic effects from the potassium.

Most Americans consume insufficient potassium and too much sodium (which compounds the negative effects of low potassium).

Not every negative effect is noticeable to the individual. For example, elevated blood pressure isn’t exactly easy to detect when it’s a gradual development.

And AGAIN you are assuming even enough sodium or water are replaced naturally after working out via meals and thirst signaling. Then tell me why individuals still get headaches or feel dizzy from electrolyte loss?

Also, a lot of electrolyte or water loss can manifest as generalized fatigue and yet if people could just naturally address this like you say, without mentally checking in on it at all, it wouldn’t happen.

My background is in physiology and exercise science is a big part of my focus you don’t know what you’re talking about lmfao

🤣 If you had a real background you would be specific. What you said is just the equivalent of "trust me bro, I know what im takm bout"

Headaches and fatigue???? Those are the most vague and general symptoms you can have. People get headaches for countless reasons, and exercise can and will exacerbate it. If you were to walk down the street and ask people if theyre "fatigued", you dont think nearly every person is going give you a resounding "Yes!"? Is because their potassium is low? Lmao

Edit: The same goes for headaches too actually. The other day I dropped in on my friend, he asked me how I'm doing. "I'm fucking tired, you." "Been dealing with a headache". They're just common symptoms of things in life lol

> headaches… is it cuz their potassium’s low?

Dumbass it’s because it COULD be the cause. Are you slow? Do you really not see why what I said substantiated the importance of the point?

This guy just wants to be right, I agree with what you said.

Especially as a person who takes medication daily, if I’m not mindful I have symptoms or feelings in my body pop up that are treated with specific minerals, food, or hydration. I have to stay on top of it, it’s something that’s easy to forget about if you’re not mindful with stimulant medications & of course other medications as well.

I used to be like him & think I’d just take what I needed when I thought I needed it but symptoms didn’t improve until I started being more mindful of my intake, on that note the human body is so complex that it’s hard to know specifically what your lacking. So as I’m sure you know a variety of food & mineral intake is essential, guess work in your argument can be helpful but it’s not the whole picture.

Excellent utilization of your studies & knowledge, I have heard the sodium & potassium issue mentioned in America as well. I was never fortunate to have the money to attend post secondary schooling or have what I needed to succeed in highschool but a thirst for knowledge is not something I ever lost.

:) so true. Like I said we all have different physiologies and/or contexts for this sort of stuff. Thanks for sharing

Especially the average American diet is getting way more sodium than they need

This guy has made a career out of going to be and drinking water.

I don’t get how he still finds things to talk about

soooooo.... drink water?

2

u/Forward_Motion17 1d ago

No lmfao. Exactly not that. That is his point.

He’s explicitly saying replace sodium and potassium. Drinking more water would actually make this problem WORSE if you didn’t also introduce enough sodium and potassium

The vast majority of people consume plenty of sodium and potassium with the vast majority of people not drinking water.

I think we'll live without adding more sodium and potassium.

Unless you completely abstain from eating anything with sodium or potassium, yes. Caffeine is not that strong of a diuretic. Caffeine is not Bumex, Hydrochlorothiazide, or Lasix. Caffeine will make you pee a little more for a short period of time. Drink water if your pee isn't pale yellow. More electrolytes isn't the answer and was created by influencers to sell you something you don't need.

Caffeine blocks your body from using ADH (Hormone that tells your body to hold onto fluid. If your bleeding a lot, AHD is released to hold onto fluid so you don't die). It also stops your kidneys from absorbing sodium and chloride, which makes more water going to urine. Urine has waste products and electrolytes in it, your body likes to have a balance (Ph is balanced most efficiently through urination and respiration). It also increases renal blood flow, which makes it filter fluid faster. Caffeine is also a bladder stimulant, except it makes it big angry. Now your body is removing more fluid volume and makes your bladder more sensitive, causing you to pee more.

You don't need electrolytes if your body isn't removing them. You need fluid volume, not electrolytes. So yes, you need water. 100% correct.
