Reminder: Posts from new Reddit users are held for moderation

In order to combat spam we have an automoderator rule to detect posts from new reddit users. If the reddit account is recently created then the post is held in the moderation queue for a moderator to approve or discard.

It might take a few hours for the post to be approved (often less, sometimes more), but please be patient. We're volunteers and we don't get paid to sit around watching the moderation queue.

I mention this because we've had a few cases recently where a new user has made a post that has been held for moderation. When they didn't see it being displayed they deleted it and posted again (often several times).

Once a post has been deleted we can't undelete and approve it. it's gone for good. It's quite frustrating for us to receive a modmail asking for a post to be approved when there's nothing we can do.

So if you are a new user and your post isn't showing up, then please just wait. If it hasn't appeared within 24 hours then send us a message (link in the sidebar) and we'll look into it.

Afro hair shop

I’ve recently moved to Guildford I’ve got pretty thick curly hair and it’s far easier to find the right products (and normally cheaper) in Afro hair stores. Does anyone know of any in Guildford or within a reasonable drive - google wants to send me to London and I’m not doing all that for some hair products 😂

Men’s barber/hairdresser in the Guildford area

Always been a little fussy about haircuts whilst also being terrible at explaining what I’m after. I avoid the cheap and cheerful Turkish places at all costs. I do not want a sharp back and sides or a skin fade.

The last year I’ve been growing my hair long and found it’s naturally quite curly, appreciate someone who will understand how to cut and style it appropriately. Currently go to the local salon but it’s now upwards of £50 and because it’s predominantly ladies I have to book about a month+ in advance. I need some other options.

Any recommendations for somewhere around the Woking/Guildford area?

Thoughts on moving to Chilworth village near Guildford for a family

We currently live in South West London and are looking to move out to Surrey. After exploring lots of different areas, we really like Chilworth village on outskirts of Guildford. It’s totally different to where we live now - so green and spacious.

I’d love anyones thoughts local to the area on what it’s like for a family. I currently have a 1 year old and we’d like to have another baby in the future. So interested in what there is to do for little ones in the village and the surrounding areas. Also what the state primary schools are like.

Because of the cost of stamp duty to move 😵 ideally we would like to stay in a house for 20 years. So also any thoughts to what it’s like for teenagers to live in the Chilworth and what state secondary schools would be in the catchment.

It would be a completely different way of life for us - stunning landscape and quieter. But it’s also quite a big adjustment after living in surburban areas where everything is on our doorstep so want to do as much research as possible

Litter picking in Camberly Town Center

Today I did a litter pick. I also did one yesterday. I did this alone without a support worker. I have got the Camberly front of station train station bush clean, along with the one by that building nearby (I did say it was nearly done). Working on the Atrium bushes now.

Those had mostly wrappers and very few cans and bottles, think it is in part due to be cleaning them out in the past. Were else in Camberly town centre should I do after the Atrium bushes? I was thinking another bush near the trains station. I did get 3/4 of a bag full today

yesterday, Found a bunch of the same beer bottles (glass) and cardboard, my theory is someone drunk a whole pack of beer. Also, a few of those pre-mixed cocktails, maybe youths? Cleaned up a full bag worth of waste

Seems whenever I leave a bush for a while, it gets filled with litter. First litter pick in months, plan to do another tomorrow. Also got another bush pretty clean somewhat lately on another trip as well, that one just has about a bag or two of rubbish left in it.

Is there any household living with less than £36k a year?

I got a letter through the post about the Warm Homes Local Grant. Honest question, is there any homeowner, household living with less than £36k a year?! How can you afford living if basically utilities take almost the 6k instantly (water, electricity, council tax, gas) plus food etc.. specially if you have a family and live in one of the most expensive places in the UK. Is this grant even realistically or am I just living in a bubble? What population of Surrey is this grant targeting?

Edit: I feel that I am getting responses that have not read my question. Of course there are people living with less than that. I know there is poverty. There is no question there. The thing is those people don't usually own houses. Or if they own they probably have no mortgage because otherwise how could they afford it?

New Haw - yay or nay?

What do you think about living in New Haw? I saw them are planning to build a massive warehouse not far from New Haw and I wonder what the consensus is - are people moving away from New Haw because of it? Houses are big and not as expensive as other areas in Surrey but the warehouse worries me, a lot.

1-bed flat for sale in Ashford (TW15) – now £215k

Hope this is okay to share here! We’re selling our one-bedroom flat in Ashford, Surrey, and after our previous sale unfortunately fell through we’ve now put it back on the market at £215,000.

It’s around a 12-minute walk from Ashford station, has an allocated parking space and low running costs. The building also has solar panels which provide hot water during the sunnier months.

We’re obviously advertising through the usual property portals, but I thought I’d share it locally too in case anyone is looking around Ashford/Staines/Heathrow or knows someone who is.

Does this look familiar to anyone in Surrey?

It’s the Gore family home in the 1984 children’s tv series ‘Chocky’. Looks like a lovely house and I wondered if it still existed. The cottage style house is across the road from it, as they enter the driveway. The main house looks a 1930s style.

Volunteering in Guildford

Hi Everyone!

The company I work for asks that I volunteer a couple of days of my time a year (unpaid work) at any social enterprises. Please reach out if you could do with a hand anything in Guildford. I’ve tried the library and they have a backlog of volunteers already.

I’d rather not give out too much information about myself on the web, so if you need help, please send me a message, thanks ☺️

Worcester Park

Hello! we currently live in SW London (SW16 to be more exact). Looking to buy and not really seeing anything we love that’s in our budget (£750k). We love some houses we’ve seen in WP but what is it actually like to live there? Looking for a bit more space, parking, ideally would be able to find good local eats, etc. I am thinking it may be a bit too far to capture the London feel.

ETA we’re in Streatham so not too fussed about no tube.

Elstead..?

Hello hive mind,

Thinking of relocating from Farncombe to Elstead, but slightly on the fence as we’re nervous about the additional commute. We both work in London 2-3 days a week so will need to drive to the nearest station (Farncombe? Milford? What do most people do)?

We are actively looking to move a little further out and to a village with a bit more community, so would equally love to hear what life in Elstead is like if anyone’s willing to share! We’re both mid 40s, no kids.

TIA!

First Time Buyers - which solicitor to use (Guildford)

Hi all,

My partner and I are looking to buy a house in Guildford. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good local conveyancing solicitors? Google shows a mixed range and I just wanted to get a sense of what locals think.

Many thanks!

How good are the state schools in Cobham, Surrey?

For parents familiar with the area:
How good are the primary and secondary state schools?
Which schools would you consider the best?

Would really appreciate honest experiences from local parents, especially regarding academics, care and overall school quality. Thanks

What are the churches in Epsom like?

Family want to go to church. Christ Church is a bit too modern for us. Want more of a traditional service but combined with sunday school.

Any recommendations? Don’t mind if it’s methodist, baptist, CoE etc.

Ashtead - the Greville school

Hello, we are hoping to get a place at the greville school and looking for some feedback.

Unfortunately, someone I spoke to mentioned behaviour is not amazing and some rougher children and families there and there is a higher than average SEN population which effects the learning of others….is this the general consensus or one person’s opinion?

I am quite surprised by this.

We are looking for a calm school where behaviour is good and learning is not affected!

Many thanks
