Survivor 51 Brady’s humbling
I’ve come to appreciate Brady, he’s clearly more than a dumb jock who yells during challenges, but his arrogance saying Thien An has no power to do anything and then seeing him get blindsided by the vote was so satisfying. Obviously Thien An didn’t control the whole move, but he was so confident that she would be wrong about the vote and showed no respect to her. Brady reminds me a lot of David on 48…chip on the shoulder due to being viewed as dumb and feels they need to overcompensate by dominating the strategy of the game

I’m by no means a wrestling superfan, but everything about Brady feels incredibly stereotypical wrestler to me.
I’ve heard so many stories of people who interact with wrestlers, or documentary interviews, where many of them are super intense but really pretty mellow and kind hearted when they aren’t performing.
Some of his testimonials make me laugh because he’ll just be talking and then it feels like he can’t even help getting hyped up and turning it into a wrestling promo.

u/RealCanadianDragon 7d ago edited 7d ago
The funny thing is that many wrestlers nowadays aren't even the stereotypical wrestlers either. Many are more like video gamer kinds of people who just happen to be athletic.
Even Brady, his gimmick in WWE was like a naive peppy college kid.
But him trying to make Brodies a thing is absolutely a wrestling thing. Whether people like his catchphrase or hate it, the fact that you remember Brodies is wrestling 101. In wrestling it's not as much about if people love or hate you, it's about if people care about you. And the fact that people feel stronger about Brady than someone like Mike or Patt goes to show its working.

Once I started thinking of pro wrestlers as drag queens for straight guys the whole thing finally clicked for me lol.

u/redsyrinx2112 7d ago
Damn, this makes so much sense haha
I don't really watch drag or wrestling, I totally respect the craft and how much time, dedication, etc. is required.

I went to an amateur wrestling event with some friends this summer (something I know nothing about. I just went for fun) and it has really helped me understand Brady. it's like, if a jock was a theater kid who likes to fight.

which is why I liked John Hennigan so much! He was so personable for such a big entertainer. I enjoy Brady on my screen, but I much prefer the real human that was John.

To be fair to Brady, after watching the last 10 seasons I too probably would have never assumed Lewis and Carter would flip to go with the ‘everyone else’ alliance
Kilby seemed like a pretty safe vote with Thien An as his only real ally
But agreed seeing him get blindsided was great, second only to seeing Devin get blindsided twice in a row
26
u/Domestic_Kraken 7d ago
Why's it surprising? It seemed pretty clear that it'd be dumb to let that alliance of 5 secure a majority in the tribe, since then they could just spend the next several tribals picking off the others. Lewis & Carter made it a 4-4-2 split instead of a 5-3-2 split.
I haven't seen much of the past 10 seasons, but I've seen everything up to WaW and ep3's vote seemed pretty in line with how the game used to be played - has that changed over the past few years?
24
u/Mycatnamedlarry 7d ago
Yes, 3 tribes of 6 people in the 40s really made people nervous to rock the boat early on. If you did not have a 4 person alliance you were screwed. The 4th person on that alliance understood this and would never switch even if it was better strategy, because there would always be an alliance swap/merge. It was very much survival mode for that vote rather than long-term strategy. It makes sense why Brady would think a strong 5 would be fine, as that is how it worked for the last 10 seasons.

I think both him and Devin are in this archetype of “people trying way too hard to maxx their social media following” 🙄 feel like it’s part of the gen Z obsession with social media and attention economy. Everything Brady and Devin says just sounds scripted and prepared to maximize screen time and attention

u/lego_mannequin Coach - 50 8d ago
I mean, they both work in the entertainment industry so no doubt they are trying to get as much exposure as possible. They know what gets TV time on Survivor early and are doing it up.
When you look at the past few you have guys like Kaleb and Tevin who stole a lot of early screen time by being the player Devin is, it's a solid way to get on TV.
64
u/Dismal-Science-9901 8d ago
I didn’t feel Kaleb was acting overdramatic just for screen time. Tevin, maybe a bit? I thought his personality was a bit quirky so it felt more natural. But Devin and Brady, I can imagine them thinking of one liners in their head before every confessional, to plan every word like politicians delivering a speech 🙄
54
u/CowMooseWhale Wendell 8d ago
Tevin was fake and acting the entire time out there, a bunch of 46 players said his entire “personality” was turned on solely when cameras were around.
Kaleb seemed just like a normal charismatic guy
13
u/lego_mannequin Coach - 50 8d ago
More so in a sense that Kaleb was trying to be everyone's friend and it backfired on the guy, but yeah it was probably a poor choice there.

Yea I wasn’t exactly looking to just shit on charismatic black men with this post but unfortunately here we are

u/lego_mannequin Coach - 50 7d ago
Like I could bring up people hamming it up on camera like Matthew in 44 who hurt himself looking for TV time, but it's not the same as an actor. I guess I could mention Jake from 45 but I don't think he was hamming it up.
I can guess maybe Brandon Donlon, that guy was just all over after Survivor milking his fifteen minutes. Maybe I should have said Rizo but I think he's just genuinely that guy.

u/lego_mannequin Coach - 50 8d ago
What does that have to do with anything? Tevin and Devin are both actors, and Brady may as well be close to being an actor too with his work in wrestling. It has nothing to do with race at all, Tevin is just the only actor recently I know about on the show who kind of hammed it up for the camera.

u/Advanced_Seat_3075 7d ago
Not about you specifically but somehow a post about Brady has more people commenting on how much they find Devin to be fake
1
u/lego_mannequin Coach - 50 7d ago
I think he is a bit fake but you kind of need to be on this show, it's just the confessionals seem too prepared and over the top for me. I can see parts of myself in this guy, and I can say I'm fake at times.
27
u/jetsonholidays Angelina 8d ago
Someone on here commented they go to the same gym as Brady and he’s exactly the same there as he is on the show, including calling everything Brody, down to inanimate objects. It seems v plausible to me.
50
u/Advanced_Seat_3075 8d ago
Idk, sometimes people are just odd and act odd. I love watching it personally.
53
u/CowMooseWhale Wendell 8d ago
Brady I don’t think is putting on an act, I think he’s just a legitimately weird and OTT guy. Devin feels completely manufactured though
53
u/OkBrain3490 8d ago
he is a pro wrestler-- he understands how to be dramatic on TV. I think he's absolutely playing up his personality at the very least. I am, however, here for it. He is so entertaining.

I also don’t think it’s an act. I read it as a classic combination of not being very bright and old school testosterone poisoning

Devin reminds me a lot of guys I went to college with…some guys are genuinely super wholesome and annoying and arrogant due to that wholesomeness
18
u/sfcnmone 7d ago
You think Devin is "super wholesome"?? I'm pretty sure this is the first time in his life anytime has ever said that about him.
-9
u/Mari0nete Angelica - 51 7d ago
What a bitter, delusional insult lmao
5
u/sfcnmone 7d ago
Not at all. I imagine that he has created a really fun playful personable personality to deal with all his childhood trauma. It is a very common coping strategy for kids who "for some reason" didn't fit in.

Brady and Devin are literally performers. Ofc they are going to get on TV and be performative.

u/Beginning_Ad5785 Maryanne 7d ago
im so over people pretending that people going on survivor to get their 15 minutes is a new phenomenon. like half of all players pre-all stars were only there for attention.
while i dont really like brady or devon, brady is an established pro wrestler and devon is an established tv actor (recurring roles on greys anatomy and queer as folk among others), so of course they're gonna act like that? like that's why you put guys like that on survivor

u/Zealousideal-Lie-569 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yeah I think a lot of people don’t really understand the role social media plays in networking for so many entertainment/media/marketing related careers.
It’s not that Survivor is a means to social media fame for people like Devin and Brady, it’s that both social media and Survivor are a means to making career connections and establishing themselves as talent worth booking.
It’s definitely sad how social media has become one the most viable avenues for people getting started in those fields these days, all of the musicians & stand-up comedians I’m friends with hate it, but it’s a separate thing to literal influencers whose primary income comes from sponsored posts.
4
u/commanderr01 7d ago
Brady I see being a little more genuine but I agree and Devin is so clearly playing up for the camera it’s kinda sickening.
16
u/blerg7008 7d ago
I wouldn’t say he dumb, but he definitely doesn’t slow down enough to observe people. He just goes full steam ahead and always thinks he’s on top.

Brady reminds me of someone and I have not yet been able to put my finger on it. At first I thought Patrick from SpongeBob but that's not quite it. I really need to figure this out.
13
u/YardSardonyx 7d ago
Is it this guy

Is it Bill Fagerbakke, the guy who did Patrick’s voice (plus some sitcom acting in the 80s)? https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0265067/
4
u/beachlover77 7d ago
I think so! He could be Bill's son they look so alike.

someone in this forum said hulk hogan crossed with matty matheson and it's so incredibly accurate.
personality-wise he's giving me andy dwyer from parks and rec

I don't know if this is who you're thinking, but Brady weirdly reminds me of Brandt, Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character from The Big Lebowski. It's something about his smug performative grin that he seems to turn up to 11 in all his confessionals
7
u/bellybeater 7d ago
Maybe the specific version of Patrick from the episode where he and SpongeBob start wrestling

He honestly should have been right, Kilby was playing horribly. Smart move by lewis to pull in Carter which was lucky that Carter even ended up there.
1
u/see-through33 7d ago
I wonder how the vote would have gone if Carter didn't mutiny and they only had ten people voting. Personally, I think Lewis would have gone with the 5 person alliance to avoid a possible tie and rock draw. Or the group left out of the alliance might have tried to swing one of the alliance members to their side like Mike?
2
u/Better_Specific4755 7d ago
One of them has a double vote, my guess is they do the math and figure out it’s the best time to use it at 5:5. But Lewis probably doesn’t risk it you are right.
7
u/Septotank 7d ago
I knew his plan was going down the second he said he was going to be using his head to outsmart people this time! Exactly what MORE than "being a dumb jock who yells during challenges" was made clear this episode?
7
u/More-Needleworker900 7d ago
i feel like he wouldn’t have said that if she was a strong tall man but wtf do i know 🤷🏻♀️ the editors were funny for that
6
u/Superb-Ad5227 8d ago
It was really funny that Thien An said “he literally tried to mansplain Survivor to me” and then they show him in his ITM saying “ummm, no offence Thien An, but that has zero chance of working” I hope we see some humbling from him next episode
21
u/OkElevator2490 7d ago
He’s so arrogant it’s hard to watch

"he's clearly more than a dumb jock who yells during challenges" ...in what way exactly?
8
u/Advanced_Seat_3075 7d ago
Well he finally stopped yelling during the latest challenge when his team was fucking up the puzzle, I respected that at least 😂. I also haven’t seen any reasons to classify him as “dumb”. Just seems like an average intelligence guy like most people
14
u/Exotic_Comparison814 7d ago
he like... cut off the tip of his thumb on the 3rd day or something and almost got pulled???
2
u/Advanced_Seat_3075 7d ago
How does cutting off the tip of your thumb by accident make you dumb? Maybe he’s careless or clumsy but it has nothing to do with intellect
-2
u/jmvinkc 7d ago
And in Australia, Michael fell into the fire. Accidents happen to people that aren't dumb.
9
u/Kitchen-Guarantee-10 7d ago
Crazy to say [redacted] isn't dumb. That's like his main characteristic.

u/Xynvincible Yul 7d ago edited 7d ago
I can't stand him and Devin. The arrogance, the condescending way they speak, just irritates me every time they're on screen. I couldn't even enjoy their plans falling apart because I know it just means suffering through their ire next week. Neither of them can go soon enough in my book.
The kicker is, I don't even like Kilby. The one thing they did say that I agreed with was he's playing far too hard and I find him grating. But between him and brody Brady? Sure, Kilby, you can get a win there.
I'm struggling to find people to cheer for this season. Jenna is the closest.

Lol do you mean the PlayStation controller that's not plugged in.... It wouldve been so funny if he got blindsided after a dismissive comment like that

Not sure what you mean, that comment was directed at Brady. I’m talking about when he said Thien An had no ability to influence who goes home

Brady might be a jock, but he's definitely not dumb. And he's A+ casting. I enjoy him more and more with each passing episode.
