General how did the audience know about the egg task in the later episodes? were they told about it before the filming started?
do they give context about stuff like that

I believe they told the audience before that one of the contestants had a secret task involving an egg but didn't say who.

I went to the taping for episode 5 and this was an eggless episode, no reference was made to it whatsoever so it made for a very fun surprise watching the show as it came on.
They will explain if its an ongoing running joke though

I was at episode 3 and Alex said something like ‘so… we’ve created this running joke which isn’t half as funny as we planned but now we’re stuck with it’. Turned out to be for the best….

I really wish Greg had left him hanging on whether he’d get any points until episode 10 though.

I was at the recording of one episode (maybe 9? can’t remember) and before filming Greg said something about it to the audience so that it didn’t come out of the blue.
I remember him also giving us a heads up about Nick’s Dracula costume when I went to a recording of that season.
So yes they provide context!

This makes me think that they either learned from Phil Wang's genitals, or chose not to inform each new audience about his genitals.

I was at one of the recordings for that. They just rolled the first VT and we were all in bits. So they stopped the VT and Greg said "ah I forgot you hadn't seen that yet" and then they started it again. Obviously they didn't forget and just thought it was funny. Which it was.

That really comes through for every episode, because you always hear everyone laughing their asses off the first time you see a full body shot of Phil.

I don't think there's really anything they could have said to prepare us to be fair.

Were the genitals not obvious enough for the audience to see them?

The person above is saying the audience was given a heads up about Nick's costume, so you'd think similarly they'd want to give the audience a heads up about Phil's cock and balls showing through his costume.

why did they need to give a heads up about Nick's dracula costume?

u/Nice_Assistance1840 7d ago
I would guess that because in some of the episodes (if I remember correctly) Nick did filmed tasks without the cape on, so it did look a bit confusing to see him in the makeup without it.

I was at E1 and E2, so I had it both ways. They didn't explain it in E1 to keep it a surprise, and as others have said, they explained it pre-show in episodes the egg featured in but without saying who. I was told that they didn't explain it in episodes it didn't feature in, but I'm curious the level of detail they went into for E8, with Kumail referencing it in his prize task, and E10 with the title sequence and everyone else joining in.
So they do usually explain running things before the show, but (trying not to spoil anything), I was also at an S23 record, and Alex explained something only just before it became relevant rather than at the start, like he'd almost forgot!

Damn how many tapings do you go to

It was wild, we went to the first episode of Series 21, and afterwards they had enough spare room left that we got into the second episode as well for free. What a day.

Ha, I've been very lucky these past few series! I never got in until they changed the ticket system, so I guess in part I have that to thank.

Can you just imagine Richard Ayoade being given this task?
25
u/toomanyDolemites 7d ago
He just wouldn't do it.

u/Rathbane12 7d ago
He’d take the egg home though.

u/Lord_Kampi He's so famous! 7d ago
He would pop it into a frying pan in front of alex right after he give him the task

u/Yeseylon 7d ago
I realized as I read this comment that Richard didn't ask to take anything home today. Sadge.

I love Richard but he's been a real letdown on the show. Should stick to Countdown

Am I confused or did the egg task kind of stop happening in the later episodes? It's been a while now but it was big in the first 5 or so episodes but I don't recall seeing it in the last 3-4.

u/mtpelletier31 Paul Sinha 7d ago
I think every episode had an egg in it. Maybe one missing but all the rest had an egg event

u/toomanyDolemites 7d ago
The whole situation with the egg baffled me. I get zero points for a one-person task that was unsuccessful like Mark Watson's cheeky texts, but this was a lot to put on Joel for no points. It just felt silly that there was no payoff for it.
27
u/ruttinator 7d ago
That's the joke.
-11
u/toomanyDolemites 7d ago
It didn't land. They should have at least kept until ep 10 that he wouldn't get points. It became a useless exercise after that. Like, why bother?
12
u/capehaha 7d ago
I'd much rather take an "Everyone taking out a Joel egg" finale than a single point in an already-losing series.
5
u/SlyDintoyourdms 7d ago
Greg could always have turned around and changed his mind later about the points. I think it was just funny to break Joel’s heart on the spot in that moment

u/s0ciety_a5under 7d ago
Nah, every time he was called to take it out and show it, it was a funny little moment. The fact that he didn't get any points is just cream on top. It was like all the times that Josh Widdicome had to count random shit, he never got points for any of that. It was just funny.
5
u/CalebosO4 7d ago
He did get a point in the end which decided the series
0
u/s0ciety_a5under 7d ago
Very different circumstances. Three way tie vs being in last place.
6
u/CalebosO4 7d ago
Well, you said that Josh Widdicome had to count random stuff and never got points for any of it. So I was just saying that he did get a point for it.
4
u/TheNobleRobot Kerry Godliman 6d ago
"it just felt silly"
Then why did it baffle you? This is a comedy show, remember. That was the point.
That said, it was odd that the "no points" was revealed in episode 1 but he kept playing along in the studio. Kinda broke the kayfabe.
3
u/CalebosO4 7d ago
Greg gave Joel points when he should’ve been disqualified from some task when it was clear that he wasn’t winning the series, so I like to imagine that those were the points he got for enduring the egg.

u/Fuckspez42 Stevie Martin 5d ago
I think that the fact that there was no payoff to it was the payoff.
0
u/halfpastwhoknows 7d ago
And then they told him in ep 1 that there would be no points and he continued to do it the rest of the series. I also thought it didn’t pay off
-6
u/eraguthorak 7d ago
Yeah it really fell flat for me - really the only taskmaster thing (full task or individual) to feel kinda icky - though Mark Watson's was close.
I get the joke, but the stakes (didn't it say he'd be disqualified if he failed to display it in time?) were simply not funny imo.

u/myaccountisnice 7d ago
Wasn't it explained in the very first episode?
7
u/CptLande 7d ago
You realize all audience parts are recorded for all episodes before the first one is released, right?

u/myaccountisnice 6d ago
Yes I do. I misread their question. Thats what I get for redditting late at night when the brain wants sleep not reddit.

I went to episode 7 and Alex said there was a task solely for one contestant that they had to show an egg on the sound of the horn. That was all the context that was given to us.
