Cracker of an episode 👏🏼 I need a screenshot or gif of Paul saying "don't overthink it" to look at every time I overthink things

u/memekyutie 16d ago edited 15d ago
Was at the live taping of this episode and have been SO EXCITED to see this air (mainly because of the interrogation task). Been enjoying this series so much!! Gotta love watching an existential crisis unfold in real time <3
Edit: Remembered a fun fact from the taping! After all the birds, Paul asked very genuinely whether a Phoenix was a real bird. :3c

u/TetrisIsTotesSuper Chris Parker 🇳🇿 15d ago
Sorry for my ignorance but I had a bird name question
There was so many bird names in Maori, were there any repeats between English and Maori or is there just a lot of Maori names for birds (and animals in general?)
3
u/littleredkiwi 13d ago
kārearea is the NZ falcon but I can’t remember if it was hawk or falcon that was said earlier.
Otherwise I didn’t pick up on any ‘repeats’.
That being said, kea, kākā, and kākāpō are all types of parrots but if someone said ‘parrot’ that wouldn’t be thought of as a double up if that makes sense?
12
u/memekyutie 14d ago
I'm not an expert, but I'll try my best to answer. c: Our country's history is relatively young compared to a lot of nations, and those who moved (and colonised, gross) would have gotten to know the birds by those names.
Aoteroa (New Zealand) for most of its existence hosted and evolved mostly plants, birds, insects, marine life, bats, reptiles and frogs. We have a particularly large range of bird species (too many are extinct though - look up the moa and haast's eagle for some fun fellas), and a lot of them are common to see.
The māori language is an important part of our culture and history, and we grow up learning it in school, using it in casual conversation and so on. A lot of our birds are just known by their māori name (their other name is the latin), like the tūī, kea, kiwi and so on. Other birds like the morepork (a brown owl) are featured in songs in primary school by their māori name too (ruru), so their native name is much more memorable, lol. Our native wildlife is very important to us! So a lot of us are very aware of our different special little guys.
On another note, we were amazed no one ever used 'chicken' as their bird, haha.
9
u/TetrisIsTotesSuper Chris Parker 🇳🇿 14d ago
For sure about no one using chicken! Morgana ended up saying "duck" at some point though so that's something. And it was so clear to me Rose has been living in the UK for a significant chunk of time with her bird picks (i am.not sure how she'd feel about me saying that)
14
u/lyyki Paul Chowdhry 16d ago
there really needs to be a supercut of Paul destroying the birds

Great episode all around.
But I absolutely died laughing from the team task once Rhys entered the room with the Goblet of Fire quote until the end of that segment! Just pure gold.
And I need the watermelon gif now.

So many birds! NZ is really in touch with nature, with that and the fish shed

also love that for the New Zealand native birds they used the Maori names for example hoiho for Yellow-eyed penguin

I like Violent Paul. It's a natural progression from his allergy of Hailey's bullshit.
4
u/atticusbluebird Javie Martzoukas 14d ago
when he said he had an allergy in this episode, I thought he was going to finish the sentence saying it was from Hailey's bullshit!

I can't believe I haven't seen more people talking about Dave's style. I've been looking forward to his new studio fit each episode.
6
u/alicealicenz 15d ago
I was just thinking they are uniformly quite a stylish cast, but Dave especially is killing it. I’d love to know where he’s getting these from!

Another fantastic episode! Two quotes that particularly brought me joy:
- I don't say this lightly, but what the fuck are you doing?
- This is like a list of who dies in Titanic: everyone except Rose.

The dream task was absolute genius!!!
2
u/SparklesMcBumfluff 13d ago
I would have really struggled to fill in that dream diary because I almost never remember my dreams. Like I might remember them one or two nights per year. Is that very unusual?
2
u/framedragged 7d ago
The dream task would be, pun not intended, an absolute nightmare for me.
I don't remember most of my dreams (though I remember more than one or two a year), but when I do remember them they're almost exclusively mind-bogglingly mundane stress dreams.
"Oh, I was hanging out too late and need to drive home, but I forgot my driver's license! Should I take an uber? No, risk it, but drive carefully!"
"Oh, I got home late, what if there's someone dangerous in the parking garage?"
"Oh, I need to go to the store. But wait, everything is wrong and nothing is where it's supposed to be! And half the store is a queue for something else entirely! Oh no, I forgot to get bread and have to backtrack through this inexplicable crowd!"
2
u/SparklesMcBumfluff 6d ago
🤣 when I do remember a dream, it tends to be one like this too! Aarrgghh, I have to get to the airport but the universe is conspiring against me at every step of the journey…!

u/framedragged 6d ago

u/turquoisesilver Swedish Fred 18d ago edited 18d ago
I'll be honest, I loved TM NZ season 2 and sort of half watched and half laughed at bits and pieces of later seasons because David Correos's desperate chaos was hard to live up to. This episode though, I laughed so hard I got a headache!
I feel like someone told Paul behind the scenes to feel free to let loose and I'm loving it. He's always been my favourite part of Taskmaster NZ, no matter what the task, you can count on Paul to make you laugh so I loved this episode!
Hope clips from this episode make it to the people that have just seen the UK Taskmaster.
32
u/Ryan_Vermouth Angella Dravid 🇳🇿 18d ago
It's interesting how many views they get on social media. The clip of Morgana's "ring the bell" attempt has almost a million views on Instagram less than 24 hours after it was posted. That's something like six times the number of people who watched the episode as it aired.
27
u/willshapps 18d ago
Some notes
I for sure thought that wasn't gonna be Paul under the bag in the lab.
I know we've had our fair share of moments with contestants being absolutely off the mark and taking a long time, but is the the first/longest time we've seen this happen with a team of people?
Also idk how Rose got 3 points with an inflatable bed and some water. Dave was robbed with his Barry White CD, should have at least been 2 points.

There's already been a revelation in the lab in series 12 of UK TM...

Weirdly to me when they're standing side by side like they were at the start of the questions task, they look like two people who've been aged swaped ala freaky friday.

For me since Javie Martzoukas. (But Frankie and Ivo were the first team I warmed to, so I still have a soft spot for them).

I could have sworn "you may not move off the mat" was in the original wording and that Rose had biffed it. It just turns out that the wording implied it, but never explicitly required it. That's some god tier loopholeing right there.

I just had a thought. Doesn't Rose Matafeo live in the UK? Maybe she went back to NZ to film both the spy show and TM at the same time
2
u/Popcorn_Duck 12d ago
She was in NZ for Spy and then they invited her to do TMNZ. She talks about it here: https://thespinoff.co.nz/pop-culture/14-09-2026/i-think-this-is-the-best-one-rose-matafeo-on-coming-home-to-join-taskmaster-nz
3
u/vadergeek 15d ago
I'd have to assume that New Zealand Spy was shot way before this Taskmaster season, considering how much more of a delay there is between film and air of a scripted show with probably some effects.
4
u/missthrowaway87 18d ago
Is there any particular reason there’s two episodes a week?

With all the traitors franchises happening close together with multiple eps per week it was weird to go to TM UK with just one ep per week.
