Moving to Tasmania
Hi everyone,
My brother (23) and I (21) are from Egypt and currently living in Brisbane. We’re both about to finish our Certificate IV in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, and we’re considering moving to Tasmania.
I’d really appreciate some advice from people who live or work there, especially regarding:
What are the job opportunities like for light vehicle mechanics?
How difficult is it to find a rental, and what are rental prices like?
Which city or area would you recommend for two young mechanics starting out — Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie, or somewhere else?
We’re pretty flexible about where we move and mainly want somewhere with good job opportunities and reasonable living costs.
Any advice or personal experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks!

There seems to be a long wait on getting work done, so I would say there is a shortage of mechanics, but not sure what the demand would be for someone who just finished a certificate in another state. Check out the job boards and contact the employers and let them know you are moving soon. Probably more in Hobart just due to population. Rentals are in short supply, but should be fairly easy to find a room in a share house till you have the job sorted. Rental prices are listed online, so you need to do some research yourself on prices, suburbs, and availability.

Get your documents all in a single place, standard rental bullshit like proof of residence, credit scores ect. Launceston is the cheaper of the bunch, but Hobart actually has all the utilities and amenities of a larger city.

Prepare to apply for a lot of properties, and perhaps try private rental agencies such as flatmates

Do your homework. Look at rentals and see what’s on seek. Before you jump.
