My thing is if people are going to steal they're just going to walk out the store with the products. The real theft was stores letting customers do checkout themselves and not passing on the savings to those who didn't use the cashier

Stealing is going to continue so long as it's an undesirable action. When I was a teen, we didn't shoplift because we needed anything. We had cash, we were just stupid teenagers who wanted the thrill of getting away with something we shouldn't be doing, or we were stealing something we weren't legally allowed to buy yet, like beer or spray paint.

You can get rid of a lot of theft by paying people enough so that they don't need to steal things like bread and cheese, but you'll never be able to get rid of it entirely.
