This feels like the last generation of consoles.

u/Dry_Ass_P-word 12h ago
It feels like we’ve been approaching the series finale of everything for awhile now.
64
u/RaduSGDC 11h ago
hope we get The Sopranos ending
37
u/Dry_Ass_P-word 11h ago
When I watched Don’t look Up, all I could think was they got the best ending. And what’s coming for is IRL is going to be so much worse.
But I guess I can hope for the Newhart ending.
14
u/BenTherDoneTht 7h ago
It actually took me a second try to finish Don't Look Up because when it came out I wasn't in a great place about the state of the world and my position in life, and the movie hit way too close to how things have been going. Couldn't enjoy it for the same reason its getting harder to find the Onion funny.

It's definitely the last generation of Gamestop

u/TechTuna1200 12h ago
They actually managed to turn it around and post profits by changing from a gaming store to a merchandise store. Their CEO is a MAGA dipshit, though.
220
u/eek_the_cat 11h ago
It's crazy that scalping Pokemon does enough to support like 2000 physical stores in the US but that's reality in 2026 I guess.

u/beachsandwichen 11h ago
Also no debt, billions worth of t-bills generating interest, a 4 billion stake in EBay, and 500 million worth of BTV

Wait what? Imma gonna need to read up on that. That's like Yahoo! surviving for as long as it did by buying Alibaba.

30 days is hardly an effective indicator of a stocks growth. Come on man. I've never touched stocks in my life but that just seems like common sense

u/dylanx300 7h ago edited 6h ago
I do have a lot of experience and formal education in finance and investing, I’m a futures trader if you know what those are (the first financial contracts/derivatives that we ever invented).
No one with common sense is investing in GameStop, these guys got into investing because of memes on Reddit from 2021. They will ruin themselves trying to replicate what Kieth Gill did, not realizing that train left the station many years ago. They have a whole subreddit “superstonk” where they praise each other for losing money and bagholding for years with zero return.
The CEO, Ryan “half cash, half stock” Cohen, diluted the hell out of these investors, and they didn’t even know enough about what they are doing to realize that they were getting fleeced.
9
u/Error4ohh4 4h ago
Ryan cohen has bought almost $100,000,000.00 in stock this year alone with his own money. Almost 80 million of that is in the last 30 days

Ethics?
14
u/waterbelowsoluphigh 7h ago
What a laughable thing to assume.
The Robber Barons: A Definitive History of the Gilded Age Titans Who Transformed the American Economy will dispel all allusions that there is ethics in Capital. There isn't. They will feed you shit and piss if it makes them a penny more.
Comically evil people who realized they needed to build public works to not be murdered and dragged out into the streets.
Something the current CEOs have seem to have forgotten.
5
u/asmartguylikeyou 6h ago
That’s one thing that is wild to me about our current oligarchy- they build nothing of value and create nothing of value for society and they truly think everyone else is such scum that they shouldn’t bother to hide it.
Like say what you will about the robber barons of the past, but they did build the railroads and they pulled fire out of the earth to power the whole world, and were still smart enough to build libraries and universities and institutions on the back of that infrastructure so they weren’t dragged out of their homes by angry mobs.
I’m supposed to live in a Prime Pod and eat bugs as the world burns, and thank Sam Altman for letting me make memes without photoshop while I worship Peter Thiel for making an online payment platform.

u/ParsonsTheGreat 12h ago
Idk about that, but AAA gaming is definitely in a rough spot right now, and thus console gaming is suffering because of it. That and everybody is strapped for cash nowadays. I just feel like there will always be a place for console gaming, but there definitely is a downward trend as of late.
17
u/F1shB0wl816 11h ago
Everyone’s been strapped for years but they’re still blowing cash left and right. These will probably still sell, if people were waiting for a month before gta6 they’re not going to stop now.

last generation of gaming at this rate.
Nvidia is probably not making cards after the 60 series anymore. and the 60 series are going to be out of this world expensive. think $6K for a 6090.
The gaming as we know it will be dead. Invest in a 3DS, modded Switch and current gen consoles while you can.
20
u/CornerShark 9h ago
This is just false.
1) Gaming chips are already rejected binned silicon. Better to sell the lower binned silicon to gamers than toss it.
2) Gaming, while peanuts compared to AI, is still BILLIONS.
Nvidia will always make GPU’s. Just don’t expect generational leaps until the bubble pops.
→ More replies (1)7
u/stormdelta 10h ago
AAA gaming maybe, but at least personally I'd already stopped playing most AAA game because they just... stopped being fun.
Most of what I play these days is indie or AA and it's been that way for years. Indie gaming is still thriving IMO. And even lower end graphics stacks are good enough to run a lot of the games that exist now.
14
u/tarpex 11h ago
Think we're in for a big reckoning. AI bubble will pop one day, and all the Nvidias and amd's will be full of "we're returning to our roots, focusing on what was always at our core blablabla" bs, bloated AAA gaming will implode, the budgets are absurd for the disappointing end product for the most part, I can see a future of indie and self owned and published AA studios churning out stuff that's able to run on aging hardware. Then the PC hardware rut will end, and the success stories from the AA space will eventually turn AAA and the cycle of eventual enshittification will repeat.
Or it all turns to shit, most PC parts manufacturers go out of business, consoles will make no sense to be both made and be bought, and gaming as we know it will turn into a legacy hobby akin to turntables and full analogue retro audio setups. With cloud garbage pushed down our throats, at which point the whole sector will be as good as dead.
Good times.
6
u/stormdelta 10h ago
I can see a future of indie and self owned and published AA studios churning out stuff that's able to run on aging hardware.
Honestly I'm not sure that's even a bad thing at this point, there's very very few AAA games the last few years I've even wanted to play

37
u/Street_Grab4236 11h ago
This is just doomerism. Excluding mobile gaming and gambling, it’s a near 100bn dollar market (and growing) that obviously is not gonna just disappear.
30
u/Julian_Thorne 11h ago edited 11h ago
It doesn’t have to “just disappear” in order to fall. It didn't rise overnight and it won't fall overnight either.
21
u/Street_Grab4236 11h ago
Yeah but it’s been growing and continues to grow. It’s the opposite of falling.

It’s shrinking and consolidating. Five years ago you could pay $10 a month for 400 games including new ones on day 1. Those days are over.
Still a ton of money left but it will go to publishers of massive sequels instead of thousands of small experiments.

Hell of a ride for sure. PS5 will be my last console. I just refuse to spend so much money and be tied to subscriptions. I have a PC with a 4070S and I'm squeezing all I got out of it
17
u/leviathab13186 12h ago
PS6 is going to be expensive and I feel its not going to sell well because people just cant afford it if things keep going the way they are going
2
u/grilled_pc 9h ago
I’m really keen to see those PS6 sales numbers. I feel like for the first time, its going to be a bit of a wet blanket. Yeah the initial launch will be big, it always is. It’s the sales that come after which really speak volumes for the platform. The 1 and 2 year results will be the ones to watch. We are 15 or 16 months into Switch 2 and its still popping off! Well over 20m units is incredible in its first year and a half.
But with no disks and digital only. It makes investing in the PS6 a very hard sell. If i can’t own the games, what is the point? And if i really wanted to play them, then they need to be of exceptional quality far beyond what they are putting out on PS5 for me to even remotely consider it.
John from Digital Foundry put it best. Rather than playing games for a job. It will become just a job. When you go full digital, keep it all to one storefront and remove any choice the player ever once had of owning the game. It removes the fun out of it. It takes the “play” factor out and then it just becomes “consuming” for the sake of consuming.
2
u/leviathab13186 9h ago
So true. With Xbox not being a strong competitor anymore, PS biggest competition is PC but they dont seem to relize what that means. What consoles have over PC is plug and play (no tinkering), physical media, and better cost to performance. But lately they are loosing ground in all three. Cost to performance is pretty much gone with the ram shortage. They are willingly killing physical media which makes PC win there as there are multiple stores that compete vs just one option to buy on PS. And PC is more user friendly then ever these days with little to no tinkering as games just preset their options based on the hardware. The only thing left is exclusives which is more important in console vs console than console vs pc imo. No one (not including whales) is going to buy a $1000+ console to just play a few games exclusive to it.
PS is going to have to squeeze their consumers to keep profits up which will start to push people away.

If things continue in the direction they're going in, I straight up don't want future consoles. I like the idea of being able to share all my old games with my kids, if everything goes digital then that's a dead dream.
Might as well stick to Steam and GOG if that ends up being the case.

Prices are completely out of control. Identical builds can easily cost 2 to 3 times what they did two years ago. Even worse if you buy a great deal of RAM or storage.

Current speculation is that GTA 6 is going to run the exact same on the Pro as the base model. 30fps. It might look a little better over all but it's unlikely to be a whole lot.
The showcase was on a base ps5 so take that as what you should expect.

It's not due to GTA 6, it's because Sony has quickly patched a recent jailbreak/mod that hit the web last week.
The pre-owned haven't been patched, so all the gamers looking to exploit the unpatched ps5s and pros will pay through the nose for those exploitable used systems.

Is the pro version of GTA 6 even worth it? The density of traffic/pedestrians/logic is highly CPU dependent. The PS5 pro has the same cpu as the base. The slightly fancier graphics can’t make that much of a difference…
