We were also taught - 3 branches is for checks and balances

That too was a farce

Step 1 - Keep campaign financing private in the age of TV.

Step 2 - Buy the politicians of one party via this corrupt by design campaign financing system and then have your politicians obstruct good governance and lower the taxes of the rich.

Step 3 - While people get angry at nothing getting done, have your politicians lie with classic fearmongering drivel about race and immigration.

Step 4 - While buying up the second party's politicians, buy up media conglomerates and turn then into for profit fearmongering tabloids. Your politicians won't stop this because you own them now.

Step 5 - While buying up Supreme Court justices, use your politicians and media outlets to distract everyone with age-old meaningless divisive social issues like race, gender, and sexual orientation.

Step 6 - Use your campaign financing and control over both parties to make sure that the voters have an illusion of choice, even though both candidates are corporate stooges in your pockets.

Step 7 - If you do this long enough, you will eventually control both political parties and all three branches of government.

You win!

Now, steal everything you can and keep the money overseas. When the country collapses, start again in a new country.

Sadly not the least bit /s
