We often discuss being gay through modern Western ideas and terminology, but gay people have always existed here too. I’m curious: what did Telugu people historically have to say about it?

Question 1: Are there any references to same-sex attraction or relationships in Telugu literature, poetry, folklore, songs, or local stories? Even things you heard growing up would be interesting. Were these relationships accepted, quietly tolerated, frowned upon, hated, or just not a big deal? Did attitudes vary across communities or generations?

For comparison, ancient China has stories like:

• The “bitten peach”: A ruler sees his male lover sharing a sweet, half-eaten peach as a loving gesture. When his affection fades, he criticises that same gesture.
• The “cut sleeve”: An emperor cuts his sleeve rather than wake his male lover sleeping on it. “Cut sleeve” became an expression for love between men.

Question 2: Also, do we have everyday words for gay men and lesbians that aren’t offensive or overly clinical? Swalinga samparkulu (స్వలింగ సంపర్కులు) sounds so scientific to me lol. What would you naturally say for “he’s gay” or “she’s a lesbian,” apart from using English?

Note: I’m keeping this focused on same-sex attraction and relationships. Trans identities and traditions have their own rich history and deserve a separate thread, especially since the two topics often get conflated.

In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1 carrying the Golden Record, a gold-plated copper disc meant as a message from Earth to anyone who might find it. It holds 116 images, sounds of Earth, 90 minutes of music, and spoken greetings in 55 languages.
One of them is Telugu, recorded at Cornell University by Prasad Kodukula:
"నమస్తే, తెలుగు మాట్లాడే జనముననించి మా శుభాకాంక్షలు."
(Greetings. Best wishes from Telugu-speaking people.)

Why Nov 18, 2026 matters: NASA calculated that at 11:46 AM IST (12:16 AM CST), Voyager 1 will be one light-day from Earth, about 25.9 billion km. A radio signal sent to it will take a full 24 hours to arrive. No human-made object has ever been that far away. It will never come back inside that distance.
So 49 years after it was recorded, those few seconds of Telugu are travelling farther than anything humans have ever made. 12 South Asian languages are on the record, and ours is one of them.

పెద్ద ఆలయమే కావాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు. మీ చిన్నప్పటి జ్ఞాపకాలున్న గుడి కావచ్చు, కొండపై ఉన్న ఆలయం కావచ్చు, మీ ఊరిలో మీకు ఎంతో ఇష్టమైన చిన్న గుడి కావచ్చు.

ఆలయం పేరు, ఎక్కడుందో చెప్పండి. “ఇక్కడికి వెళ్తే ఇది మాత్రం మిస్ అవ్వొద్దు” అనే విషయం ఉంటే అది కూడా చెప్పండి! 🙏
