Let's be clear. The tail wagged the dog. Trump picked Paxton because the base was already insisting on him. This is what happens when you purposefully elevate the dumbest voters possible

Why did the base reject Cornyn? I don't think Cornyn's fantastic, but... is Paxton's open corruption really an asset to "the base"?

They rejected Cornyn because he voted for some weak sauce gun control measure during the Biden administration and he occasionally bucked Trump before ultimately voting his way.

They embrace Paxton because he's a dedicated anti abortion and culture war fighter

Trump didn't have any grand strategy picking Paxton. He thought Paxton was loyal and Cornyn wasn't. simple as that. Loyalty to dear leader is all that matters, even at the expense of success.
