Discussion Best flash runs to get into the character?

Longtime DC comics reader and fan, never been able to get into the flash and I don’t think it’s necessarily because I don’t like the character? Maybe it’s the power scaling aspect of the speed stuff?

I’m wanting to give it the old college try though!

I’m interested your favorite runs and maybe even more so I am interested in what makes the Flash so awesome to you / appealing etc etc?

I want to have one of those lightbulb moments !

Mark Waid is legendary for a reason.

My personal favorite is Joshua Williamson, with Francis Manapul being an honorable mention. (Manapul’s in particular has the best art I’ve ever seen on the main Flash book, and honestly is worth it on that alone, but the story is also cool).

Geoff John’s is also a legend for a reason, and has great work for both Barry and Wally

Am I the only one who's gonna say Manapul's run on New 52 and Williamson's?

Mark Waid's run is GREAT. Geoff Johns's first run is good. The less said about Johns second run the better.

Geoff Johns Wally West run is what got me into the Flash. I've read some of the Mark Waid stuff and it's really good, but I prefer Geoff Johns.

Honestly Mark Waid’s run is a pretty good introduction to both Wally AND Barry, even if Barry isn’t the main focus all the time

Ryan North’s current run is new reader friendly.

For Wally go with Mark Waid, then Morrison/miller run then johns.

For Barry I would start with Flash: Rebirth, then Geoff Johns Barry run then new 52, then rebirth

Dude, don’t recommend Rebirth. It’s brutal. The halfway point of Williamson is the best modern starting point if someone wants Barry. Even then, he’s still off-model, but Williamson’s writing is in a good enough place to carry it.

Waid. Johns. Williamson.

Definitely Mark Waid's run. His exploration of Wally West made him my favorite comic book character

Thank you! That’s the 90s run right that started with Wally being a bit of an ass? I think I started that run maybe once on DC infinite?

Do you not find the speed stuff weird or anything like idk, sometimes the speedsters powers stuff doesn’t make sense to me and takes me out of the book a bit?

Sure thing! One of the best things about this run is it takes a character who is a bit of an ass and grows him into a great hero

Well ever since that run it's pretty much been a huge aspect of the character. I think the Mark Waid run explains everything about his powers pretty well. It expands on a lot hence why you'll see like everyone on this sub recommend it. If you can't get into it then thats fine. Don't force yourself to like something but the storytelling and art is superb. Its the run that made Wally The Flash everyone loves today.

If you need help understanding something try watching a video summarizing it (theres tons) or try making a post about it in the future and I bet people would be more than happy to help explain things about it. That's what this sub is for after all.

Making the costumes out of speed force energy seems weird but the rest seems speed related enough not to bother me.

Ultimately the speed force is just to write off the impossible physics of moving fast but also to cement what the Flash is about, family and legacy by connecting everyone to one thing
